Hopefully the POTUS statements were aimed at the drug cartels and I don’t mean MS-13

IMO, he's talking about Big Pharma

My wife works in big pharma....they are beyond pissed. We actually got into a bit of an argument about it. Pharma is pulling out all the stops to stop Trump, they know he is derailing their gravy train. Trump isn't kidding in this video, big players are making big moves against him.

For one, lets see it. Following through has never been this president’s forte.

I don’t disagree but that’s not the answer to my question.

Let me put it a different way since all things Trump is bad for you...

Do you agree, or disagree, with the pharma companies?

My understanding is he already signed the order opening US markets to foreign drug makers that were previously closed....My wife's argument is "what about all that America first bullshit?" This opens the door for the generics to absolutely demolish the US drug market. This is a HUGE deal.

I imagine you already have, but just in case, tell the wife that when they start treating Americans like the rest of the world, we’ll switch it back. 👍

I unfortunately have to take a prescription allergy medication on a daily basis.
30 day supply over here, $180.
Go to Mexico for a 30 day supply, $6.
Nah, nothing going on with big pharma.

Lol....that's what the argument was about. She pointed around our house and said "like living here in our badass house? be careful what you wish for, what do you think paid for all this?" She has a point, I'm between a rock and a hard place.
One component most people do not take into consideration is the crazy amount of money it takes to develop and bring a new drug to market. Which is where my wife comes in....her current project she has raised a BILLION dollars and they will need more to make it market. Big risk for investors, so take away the reward ($$$$) and the investors will go elsewhere......then who will develop the new drugs? the government? LOL. yeah right. Double edge sword here for sure.....

This is the problem. There is a reason people go to shithole TJ to have medical procedures done and buy medication. Crazy how much more we pay for meds here. I get the money to pay for all the research and testing... but holy shit. It's a racket for sure.

I am no fan of big pharma based on the drugs and vaccines they are pushing. No doubt they have the power to buy a lot of influence.

I am concerned that Trump is on the one hand wanting to get involved in private enterprise because taking advantage of us while at the same time pushing a new unneeded, untested, vaccine.

Why can't these "R&D" costs not be spread and shared by all who benefits........and why must the U.S. be the only ones to fund these costs for the rest of the world? Sorry, unlesss you have answers, your argument is flawed.

and by "research" they mean political payoffs!!! that's where the real $$$ comes in. No doubt it's the largest single "cost" item on the expense sheet. "research" can be a very broad term and in this scenario is UGE.

Understandable, but ALL who benefit from these new drugs should share in the development costs equally i.e. the rest of the developed world OR charge the countries who don’t share in the development costs for the R&D more i.e. the rest of the developed world.

They’ve been fleecing us for decades.

Tell your wife if they get their product down to a reasonable price they can produce it in America.

Or maybe it’s better if American citizens give all their money to the pharmaceutical companies?

I totally concur.
I hope he's playing the go along to get along for now. Just like back when he was agreeing with new gun laws, he never followed through with them.
One must remember, he has an axe to grind with big pharma/vaccines because of Barron. I think he just keeps it under wraps for the time being.
Let's hope so.

So if the drug companies don’t develop new drugs you die or live a miserable life. If you can’t afford the exorbitant cost of the drugs you live a miserable life or die. Give all your money to the drug companies and live a miserable life because you’re broke. That sounds about right.

That's also why many of those first jobs people get are for minimum wage. Never meant to be lived off of.

Bottom dollar Walmart old fashioned regular insulin $27.00.. Mexico bottom dollar same stuff $5.50!! Gee I wonder where I get it?????? Another drug that my insurance wouldn't cover was a blood sugar drug that in the States would have cost me $680.00 a month, buying down there $120.00. Same phucking box!!!!!!!!!

Back when I worked in a shop in Riverside,Ca, the manager's son needed those inhaler thingies. They were 12X more in the States then in Mexico and this was 35 years ago.

Hey people, we're getting phucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now Trump and his supporters are advocating for Price Controls. What could possibly go wrong with price controls?

We're not talking about home goods, clothing, or construction material. We are talking about medication that some people really need to live a semi healthy life.

All I would want is for us to have the option to buy those drugs out of country on line or via mail without having to travel to pick it up. If the "In Country" market wants to keep their prices high for the same product, then I'm sure they will do just fine.

Let the people choose.

The short answer is no. But I also don’t agree with insurance or big oil either.
By messing with pricing you are only treating the symptom and not the illness. Without dealing with their access to lawmakers you are not truly addressing the route issue.

The R&D costs are shared by private investors all over the world. The notion that the US government is funding R&D in any substantial way is absolutely false. Yes, there are some grants here and there, but most grants are share agreements that must be paid back if the drug successfully makes it to market.

Currently, there is no mechanism to R&D new medicines other than the one we have. The risk to investors is HUGE, less than one percent of new drugs make it to market. Think about that....less than 1% actually cash in. Can you imagine my wife hits you up for 10 or even 100 million then two years later the drug fails and you are left with nothing to show for it? That is the big pharma gamble being played out every single day. Now, I AGREE they have some ridiculous pricing and pricing strategies sometimes but you do not have to participate, don't buy the drugs. Why should big pharma be any different than say Amazon? Everyone here being critical of big Pharma is getting packages from Amazon, who is in fact bigger and more profitable than all of big pharma! Maybe we should shut down Amazon because we are ENTITLED to cheaper stuff with less profit being taken by those greedy capitalists.

This sounds great in theory...but this order will FOR SURE open the door to counterfeit drugs. There is no way the FDA will be able to police the slew of generics that are coming. Best they will be able to do is respond when people get sick and die from some made in china or mexico counterfeit drug.

Here is a dirty little secret.....some of those price disparities are caused by trade agreements like NAFTA and have nothing to do with the actual makers of the drug. I'm not saying the drug companies are completely innocent by any means but often there is more to the story than just the end user price.

I agree 100%, the problem is the way the system works right now We (Me, You and every other American) end up subsidizing the costs for the rest of the world, the rest of the world who enacts price controls and extortion for market access (through all kinds of different mechanisms, including trade agreements). We pay $100 for a prescription so that someone in Europe only has to pay $10. This is not a 'Free Market' in any sense of the word, it is the US customer getting all of the downsides of a free market while people in other countries get all the benefit. Completely one sided.

For sure, but maybe it's time to re-evaluate some of these things, or start applying pressure to get the other countries to agree to new terms on them...

or we could just let the status quo continue as has been done in the past.

The intellectually dishonest want to frame this argument as a violation of the free market, which is an absolutely joke. A free market would include other countries not using their governments to force the price control in the first place. But that's why nobody takes what they have to say seriously anymore. :)

And i couldn't agree more about the investment that has to be made in the first place to develop the drugs, and how none of that exists without profit motive.

Please see t&y's post above....my words exactly! With all that jibber jabber you just posted....you did not address the simple question as to why Americans are having to pay multiples for the same medications as other counties for the same......

I notice 530 liked your post.....That qualifies it as a "Certified Pretzel".......Congrats!

And BTW....are you going to stand by your statement below....because dying should not be considered a viable option?

Now, I AGREE they have some ridiculous pricing and pricing strategies sometimes but you do not have to participate, don't buy the drugs.

When there is only one customer, such as countries that have single payer healthcare, they have the negotiating leverage over the drug company. As a result they get lower prices on drugs where there are multiple competitive therapies.

I don't support such plans, but I understand there is a benefit to them on purchasing power.
