A dirty shop means a busy shop. I was always warned to stay away from clean shops. That's a sign that they have to much free time to clean and they have no business. Plus Wilkes doesn't exactly have a huge amount of employees. ;)

They are pretty busy over there so cleaning up might be a low priority right now.

Ok so I've finally started to do some things to this beater finally. Cleaned the bilge up. Replaced some screws in some of the hardware. Put a new bilge pump and hose in it today. Looks like I've got to replace the steering at the helm as there is a ton of slop in it. (Luckily Wilkes has a bunch of spare parts for it since they don't make it anymore. Wiring harness is almost done. Motor should hit the dyno soon. Trans is done. After looking at it a bit today I think I'm gonna make it so its a pain in the ass to open the hatch so I won't have to show the engine compartment to anyone since its gonna be boring as hell in there. This will probably be the most boring Schiada to look at as its gonna be pretty plain Jane. It should serve its purpose well though as the family truckster.

Congrats on the motor, that's another step foward in the right direction. Are you running the motor on the dyno to tune it or see what the numbers are or both. And I don't think there is such thing as a boring Schiada, they are all nice to look at no matter what.......kinda like a big girl, ya still check out her rack:boobeyes:

D. All the above. Tuning is the big part of running it on the dyno but we want to know the hp/tq numbers so we can put the right gears in the v-drive. Plus its nice to know that we won't have to do any tuning once its in the boat.

Just got back from Wilkes shop. Motor is done and ready for the dyno. They've been busy over there so my stuff got pushed back a bit. He's gonna try and get it on the dyno next week. They got my trans back too. I ended up needing a whole new one. They said the case was cracked and it was junk inside. Dropped the v-drive off too and Bounce is gonna tear it apart soon. Slowly but surely. Its gettin there. Sorry, crappy cell phone pic.

I used to do over $160,000 a month in sales out of my old shop and we only ran 6 employees. We NEVER went home before the shop was clean and organized, even if that meant staying till 2 am. Regardless of how busy we were a dirty shop reflected poorly and our competition that is no longer in business affirmed that fact. It was hard to convince a customer we would resepct their pride and joy if we couldnt even respect our own shop. I for one will not drop my vehicle off to a shop that wont make the extra effort to care for it, and a clean and organized shop shows that little extra effort

Thanks for that. I'm pretty certain my motor is gonna be ok dirty shop and all. ;)

Dirty shop/Clean shop = shop managers responsbility.

We've had both. But the dirty manager didn't last long.
Even if we're working 2 shifts, which we do a bunch in the season, the shop gets cleaned. I won't say our quality is down when it isn't clean. But we sure lose things when it looks like crap in here. We misplaced a $350K valve for 3 weeks once :D

As long as he's been in business I don't think the shop being a little "dirty" has hurt him. They still turn out good work and have a good reputation. This is a big investment for me being a broke dick and I wanted to use someone that I knew more on a personal level. I can give a rats ass about the shop being a little dirty. Would you guys rather I used Teague and his clean shop? If you only knew what that self centered jack ass quoted me for a similar motor. :smackhead:D

As long as he gets it done to your satisfaction thats all that matters. The cleanliness or not of the shop is his problem. It does affect people's perception, but sometimes it really doesn't matter. When my Teague blows I doubt it'll be going back there. I've already talked to a couple guys who can get it done, better, faster, cheaper. And they don't have white floors in their shops :D

And they probably won't waste an hour of your time telling you how awesome they are. I swear I couldn't get off the phone with that guy.:skull

Why do I think you had or were looking at AFR's?:)

Yes I had them paint my AFR's black. This motor is nothing special. Its just a low HP high torque work horse. I don't need it pretty. Just clean and simple. I'm already not liking the fact that I have to polish these valve covers.

The motor has AFR heads, mild porting, I think its a Scat crank and Eagle rods with the L-19 rod bolts, Ross pistons, hyd. roller cam, Jessel shaft rockers, studded mains and heads, Victor Jr. intake, 850hp Holley, MSD billet dist. I hink compression is somewhere around 10-1. Good parts, just set up for reliability. If I really got a hard on for power all I would need is a cam and piston change and slap a huffer on it.

Bounce talked me into painting it all black really. Its a pain to clean raw aluminum intakes and heads. The black will hide the dirt. I told Wilkes what I want to do with the boat and this is what he recommended. The price was right so I went with it. He built pretty much this same motor for someone else except it had a tunnel ram on it and the guy hit triple digits at Irvine this weekend in a 19 Sanger flat bottom.

Sounds like another infamous engine builder whose name I won't mention (but is currently incarcerated) who couldn't stop telling me how great an engine builder he is. He said I needed to send him $15K so he could set aside some shop time for me. But I should expect to pay at least another $15K or so by the time he was finished with his most awesomest work :blah: Unfortunately his past caught up with him before I was able to cut the check

lmfao....

Did you just type most "awesomest":D:rotflmao:

I bet it hits mid to high 600's on the engine dyno.

What cam?

Honestly if I would have had an extra $7-$8k I would have had Schmidt racing build me a motor. I was real close but just couldn't afford it from them. Those guys are sharp for sure. They were gonna do a 540ci single carb motor for just over $15k with a 1 year warranty. It would have been around 750hp.

What cam?

My guess is 625hp and upper 600's on the torque. Not sure on the cam specs. Its pretty mild as we're trying to keep the torque numbers up. Bounce wouldn't give me a guess so I guess we'll see. He did say it sounded pretty "lumpy" when they fired it up. LOL!!!!

I think he actually said that...lol

When I hung up I must have had the most puzzled look on my face. The wife kept asking what happened...what happened?

I could see that happen.....:skull

Then she had the most confusing look when you didnt pull the trigger on something for once:D

Just got off the phone with Wilkes. I guess I owe you a beer. :skull

dude....its a 496 with a healthy drive train AFR heads and a big ass cam:D

That would be like me telling the ladies that I have a small pecker only to whip out my monster sized rhino cock and make them pass out...lol

I don't know enough about the motor, cam, carb or compression but that motor could easily make 700+ on 91. On race gas I could see closer to 800 with all the goodies.

So what did she do?:bang:
