We were cruising through the channel this weekend and the LHCPD pulls up next to us, I'm thinking what the H... I havent been drinking. Well they reach over and hand us two T shirts, I am confused. It turns out that they like to reward people for doing the right thing and being safe. My niece and her friend are under 12 years old and they received T shirts that said they were caught wearing life jackets, they were so exited. Anyway just thought it was pretty cool of LHCPD good job guys and THANKS.

Same thing happened to us a couple of weeks ago. We were launching at Windsor and just as I am about to fire up the boat, ranger runs up to my boat and waves at me to come over to him. I'm thinking "oh crap"!! He says to me he noticed the kids get in the boat and put their life vests on right away so he gave the kids "caught wearing life jackets" T-shirts and some stickers. The kids were really excited. :)

I think that's cool and it's happened to me up here before....BUT.....I think it's just another excuse for LEO's to approach you. Have you ever noticed that cops will hand out free turkey gift certificates around thanksgiving to "good drivers" but they always pull over shady looking cars? Don't think for a second that if they thought you were impaired at all they would think twice about hauling your ass off to jail in front of your kids wearing their brand new t-shirts.

Perhaps they are finally realizing they have PR issues.

Id rather see a sweeping cultural change over free t-shirts, but its a start... I guess

Probably pretty close to the truth.

The under cover in Parker had a similar approach. Once they realized it was a soda or had no reason to harass you they would say Happy 4th as if that is really why they rolled up on you from the start. After being passed over 20 times and by the same one I asked him if he was hungry. He seemed shocked and said no. I mentioned the smoker going and he said do not twist my arm. He lightened up after that. I offered the other 2 in the marked suv food and they said not hungry drove a few feet and accused me of trying to poison them. They sure could lighten up there attitude we are not criminals but friendly river goers out to have a good time.

Lol.. geez. Can't win either way.:cool

What do you think the immediate reaction of a person being pulled over is going to be, a positive one? The first reaction of 99% of people getting pulled over is fear, whether they are doing anything wrong or not. I would prefer they leave me alone, too, but the problem is that LE doesn't give you the choice. You have to stop when they light you up or approach you. Being forced to do what LE wants even though you aren't doing anything wrong sounds like fun, right?

Nobody ever says, "Fuck yeah, I am being pulled over. Probably free T-shirts".

There you go with common sense. Not clouded by the blue goggles. You know, just trying to be friendly.

Not sure about this last weekend. But another move I watched the 2 ladies in the state patrol boat do all day on Memorial was drive up the river on the wrong side of the river. They would split through boats. Saw them pull over a hand full of people and was wondering why. I was thinking if they passed her on the left side they were getting pulled over, but you were damn near in the bushes passing her on the right.

They don't need probable cause to hand you something free ...and it starts a contact .

No they don't.

About a month ago we pulled into the Marina and I tied up to the gas docks like always (to drop off the wife to go get the truck and trailer), at first I did'nt notice it, but 2 LEO's were tied up getting gas on the opposite side. The one was just starring at me with a nice smile on his face, I was polite and asked him "how are you today, Great and how about yourself" he replies. We'll that started it... he walks across the dock, right next to the boat and starts some idle chit chat crap about my boat, oh cute dog.. the whole time looking around in the cockpit, moving back and forth with me as i'm wiping down everything inside. I'm thinking all this guy wants is to get close enough and smell some alcohol on me :rolleyes. I played his game and won.

I was sober, so his loss :p

Everyone is a criminal. Just ask them.

Who would even WANT to do that job? Takes a "special" person to do it, no doubt.

I understand. I guess I just figured when a guy comes on here and shares a positive experience regarding a police contact, it might actually stand a chance of staying positive. My RDP common sense must be lacking today.

I love my job. It does take a "certain" kind of person, not sure it's really special. You have to be able to contact people with objectivity, instead of bias, in order to do it right. Most people don't have that ability. You specifically have an very obvious bias regardless of how many times you hit the "thank" button. Try reading, and posting in here, with the perspective of it being a boating site with a bunch of people hanging out having a good time and the posts might read a bit different;).

The real problem is everyone seems to think they really know how to do my job because they have had prior contacts with police or watched a couple episodes of COPS. Reality is you don't really understand it until you actaully do it. Kind of like having children. Most people can relate, but it's a whole other ball game once you actually have them. In both cases, the Cops or the Parents just have to sit back and shake their heads a bit when someone who is either not a cop, or not a parent, tries to give them advice on how things are really done in either scenario.

Oh and, we don't hand out shirts. That's a water cop thing.

I agree. In addition to my previous post, this last weekend my truck broke down when leaving the marina. As we were sitting on Beachcomber blvd in front of the Island Inn,2 different motorcycle LEO's stopped (at different times) to see if we needed anything. Both were very cool and friendly, one was actually pretty funny.

Point being that these 2 guys clearly had no alterior motive other than our good will.

Good job to the parents for following the laws, and good job to the officers who gave them the t shirts. There's two more kids that won't hate cops as they grow. They may even has some respect for them.

Funny, when your truck gets stolen who do you call? Or you show up in Havasu to find your house vandalized. Who do you call? No one? Why would you since the cops are to busy out beating up old ladies and children they stopped to give a free shirt to for walking in the cross walk? No you call LHCPD! Come on, all cops are not bad, and they all have a job to do. They get paid to keep the water ways safe, that is their sworn duty. I know there are 20 angles to this, and some feel that the leo's are only out to get them. Yes, some are dirty, and some are assholes. Guess the same could be said about school bus drivers.

Great post thank you for sharing, I'm going to tell my two daughters.

Well that's simple. You call the cops. Not because you want to, but because the insurance company's require the claim information to start theirs. I've had shit stolen numerous times and that is why I have insurance. Take a guess on who was more helpful between the two groups?

Bummer on the shirt. I'll guess I'll stick to staying as far away from you as possible. :)

I'd call it a realistic, not bias. I am by far not the only one who thinks so. Look around. I tend to hit the like button on many subjects BTW.

Maybe you should try and "sit back and shake your head a bit" then. Don't get involved. :)

I tend not to hang out with peeps who can take me to jail for a myrad of laws, few are even familiar with, designed for that very purpose. Revenue and the business of incarceration, with just enough public safety to get the masses behind it.

I dont think that they had any ill intentions, if it was PC they needed to stop me they had it. We dont run any CF or AZ numbers since we dont register new or demo boats. However we have a demo/dealer plate that we carry inside the boat just in case. Dont get me wrong I dont like getting pulled over and I can share a story abot a LEO out there thats a doozie but I took this experience as a good gesture. The kids thought it was really cool.

My house borders a trail, as such we get a lot of walkers at all times of the day. My wife's truck seems a target to get vandalized. Last year someone sprayed orange construction paint all over it the passenger side. Lucky I was able to buff it off. Wife insisted on a police report. I didn't call. She called and said they came out two days later, the officer acted bothered that he had to make a report.

Last week, someone keyed the entire drivers side. Bed, rear passenger quarter, drivers door, fender. Completely fucked up the paint. She called last Monday and as of today, no one even came by. Maybe the holiday weekend has them busy.

The current LE/citizen relationship really is in a terrible state. I would love to live in a world where I could assume that all LE are here to help me and give out free t-shirts. I am sure you would love to live in a world where you dont have to fear that some looney might shoot you while you are eating a doughnut. It makes life difficult for good citizens as well as good cops.

Not sure how or what would change that situation. Maybe LE can throw out free t-shirts to the kids and a couple of silver bullets to the parents who are having a responsible, good time ;)

You call and ask to speak the the Watch Commander and file a complaint. More common sense. Or you could actually drive down to the police station and handle it face to face.

I have had to call the local police department a few times simply to document things (minor crimes). The big picture is real simple. If the police don't know things are going on, they will not be looking for things going on, so you have a choice to make. Do you enlighten them to ongoing vandalism and request additional patrols, or do you keep trying to stay far away from them and handle it on your own?

Common sense is they don't give a fuck. Nothing in it for them. True story.

No money in catching a 14 year old vandal. If his parents cared, they wouldn't be out fucking up people's hard earned property. Burden of proof? Without an admission, or a witness....please. Now that is common sense.

That is what the media and internet websites would have you believe. Reality might be a bit different. I am a white guy, working with another white guy, in a very not so white area. Given the uproar in the media you might assume my contacts following all the recent things post Mike Brown have been nothing but negative. Reality is we have been flagged down more now then before by Blacks and Hispanics in the area we patrol thanking us for what we do everyday. You would never know that because that is the last thing the media is going to give you.

Maybe that is why threads like this always seem to turn into a shit show. Most people posting really don't have too much to go on other than what they hear/see/read in the news. Maybe their only contacts with police are receiving tickets or on the water inspections. I can see how that might make someone think negative. I can only hope they have a bit of reason and understand that tickets and boat inspections are a very small portion of what Law Enforcement actually does.

Ya, It seems that some people here paint with a broad brush. I for one, like that they show a presence and try and keep some of the younger animals curtailed. What a lot of people don't realize is it's not Parker of 20-30 years ago where there were far less boaters. As crowded as our boating area's are now we all need to simmer down a little bit.

Ok. So you don't really want anything done, you just wanted to complain about the police. Mush easier if you just state that ahead of time. Sorry for trying to help. I'll go back to just shaking my head.:cool

Want anything done? Nothing is going to get done. Nothing got done the last time, I already stated why. Wasn't that clear?

My only complaint is I had to hear about them last night for them not coming by after a week to make a report, so I could turn it into the insurance, I guess. Watch my rates climb again. When I said "Why bother?" in the first place.

You know nothing is going to get done, you fill in the blanks, turn in the paper and forget about it. I know it, you know it, total waste of time.

Shake away, sir.

I am going to wish the shithead grows up and learns the feeling when someone fucks up THEIR shit they worked for.

Or, better yet, the next time they fuck up a cops personal car, that way, the cops have a vested interest in doing something about it. :)

Simple question for you. If I have two areas to patrol, one is A, the other is B, and I constantly get calls for service from A, never hear of any crime from B, where do you think I should patrol? Part of my job is to enforce and try to prevent crime, where do you think I'm going to spend my time patroling? It's all good with me if you just want to complain, but what you don't seem to understand is the bigger picture here. Statistics drive patrol meaning cops patrol where the crimes occur. If they never hear of issues at your house then they have no reason to go there other than a random drive by.

So you have a complaint about the cops doing nothing, but you refuse to inform them something needs to be done. Can they get all CSI on your vandalism case? Probably not. But the point is if they aren't aware of the issue they aren't going to look for the issue.
