It will run...and look like new....

I have been trying to buy this boat since I first went for a ride in it in 1995...It was owned by a friend at work...In 95 It looked and ran terrific....after that season he decided to buy a fishing boat instead....This boat sat, covered, for a while...and then uncovered in his back yard, until now..Every year or so I would ask about it, and he would say, "Im gonna restore it one day.."

Unfortunately the upper gelcoat surfaces are too far gone, so this boat will have to be painted....I didnt care for the gold scheme anyway...All the parts nowadays unavailable, are still with it.....and its an excellent candidate for restoration...

You know you have a lot of work cut out for yourself when the first step involves a rake. Have fun with it.

Its concerning when brush fires are an issue in your boat.

At this point, Tom's pride precludes any jetboat ownership....I am hoping to make it a reliable lake cruiser. Original paint design...more or less, except in blue flake over silver or white....we'll see..:p

Going to use gel or pai...uh.....nevermind.I know the answer already. You're not a fan of gel. So,what kind and brand of paint will you use? Lookinf forward to watching this come together:thumbsup

Perhaps I just dont have the understanding of gel that I need to?....

State your case for gel, outside of a mold of course, and then walk me thru it....and I will use it....

Here is what I have planned...This boat now is champagne over cream, and then white on the bottom....it was also available that year with a metallic blue ove baby blue, over white...that is the scheme I want...blue...

I have found the flake that I think comes closest to the blue, but im not sure that color is available in Monster size. I have a call in to Roth to find out..

Can you promise that If I use gel i will be able to get it to shine like automotive urethane?

photos of my plan..

I didn't mean to imply that one or the other was better for refinish work.I was curious as to what type of paint.Sounds like uerathane.
You know I have little outside the mold experience,I am not your best source for that info.
As to shine,it's all in how well it's maintained.I have seen 20+ year old gelcoat that looked almost new,in fact mistaken for new.I have also seen 20+year old gel that was so chalkey and white,Tom Brown would look tan standing next to it:D

I have sprayed gel repairs, but never a whole boat...only white...sanding and buffing it worked me to death, and the shine didnt really compare to what I can do with Polyurethane paint...

I will likely use either Dupont or PPG products if I go with paint...
The very bottom of the boat is white...If its in ok shape, I may just buff it out, and paint from the parting line up

That's probably the best plan, use what you know.I do like the idea of keeping the running surface gel.I feel it has a better water repel than paint.
The work with gel is the finish sanding.Prep is prep, the finish sanding of gel makes it a bitch.Long term,I would bet gel lasts longer, but then,I am biased.
It will be interesting to see how the front/rear cap jobs the likes of DCB,Eliminator and others do will last long term compaired to the rest of the boat with out of the mold gel.I myself am not a fan of the front /rear cap, just goes against the grain of cutting into a finish that was fine to begin with.

I like the flake idea,but then if it's old school flake,wood grain,or both,I dig it.:coolSo...............

Floor is completely gone, water level in bottom, right up to floor level....oddly, the areas of the stringers I could access seemed pretty solid, given they are under water...

No Hoffa....Cobra...

The same 460 that is in it now...original power...boat has a little over 200 hrs on it since new...Im not sure that anything I can do to it short of a blower will affect top speed..

It's not that difficult to get the engine into the 600hp range and a top speed around 65mph.

Personally, I'd skip the blower. In fact, I'd skip any other mods too. I'd run it basically stock but with a carb rebuild kit.

Im not sure, with the space being that tight, that anything other than tose headers would fit either..Carb and starter currently being rebuilt....We will see soon if it starts and runs

I'll mention that lots of guys have had coolant migrate to the oil through a rotten timing chain cover. If you have it apart much at all, I'd pull the cover and see how it looks.
