That sucks, the special bushing requires a 13/8" bore. JJ Beaver can build you a new drop thru out of stainless or steel, your'e choice for about 750.00

Gonna wait for Bergerons analysis of the shaft.

Bore is 1.250 ID with .200 wall thickness and 1.015 bushing ID. If the wall was thicker it could be bored.

How thick does that bushing have to be? You couldn't stretch it to 1.300 ID and then machine the bushing a little thinner? Actually just thinking in my head, 1.250 to 1.125 shaft? You can't run a .062 thickness bushing?

Might be able to if you had some unobtanium to make it out of?

So we got some testing done over the T-day weekend, we stuffed the original K-Monel 1" shaft back in it and tried three different 2 blade props (all borrowed) Tried an 11 3/4 x 15 and saw 106 on the rev limiter at 6K. Then tried Marc's 11 5/8 x 16 prop, it worked but brought back the side to side rocking a bit, we saw 107 at 6000 RPM. We had one prop left, Matt's 11 3/4 x 16 we saw same #'s as Marc's but no rocking. With that knowledge we went home, pulled the shaft and cut 3/8" off the end and 3/8" off the back of the strut. Went back out Saturday morning with Matt's prop pushed up 1/8" away from the strut and 1/4" away from blast plate. Joe ran a few passes at 109 and 110 at 5800 RPM with no rocking and that was the set up and #'s we were looking for with the 60 gear. I finally got my chance to drive my own boat and I can only describe it as the fastest, hardest accelerating (from 4000 to 5800) 21 I have ever drove :thumbsup We now need to try Matt's prop with the 63 gear to hopefully see the 5600 RPM were looking for :D

How did you guys come up with the idea to cut 3/8" off the shaft and the back of the strut ? Why did that drop the R's and gain 2-3 MPH. ?

Congrats by the way !

Nice work! Good to hear its coming to you! Just a bit of info from our experience: When we changed from a 1" to an 1 1/8" shaft, along with a new SS Strut (same shape and setup as original but for 1 1/8") the boat changed a little bit. With the prop in the same location it got kinda spooky especially mid turn. When you transition from decelerating and turning hard on the skegs to rolling the power on, the boats rear end would loosen up and it was almost like driving a drift car. Not a good feeling. Our slip numbers also went up. Moving the propshaft back in the coupler 1/4" fixed all the problems and helped settle the nose of the boat. Although our two setups are very different, maybe this will help you. It was almost like the prop was running in the wake of the shaft and not getting proper water flow to the hub. It felt like a surface drive cat when the drives are too high or the props are running in a trough from a water pickup sticking down too much. Vague/Loose rear end from improper blade bite at the hub.

Good Luck! ;)

It's occurring to me that describing ill handling characteristics in a v-drive sounds a lot like wine tasting... With probably a similar amount of experience required... :D

"It's oaky, but with a dryness that comes from an early harvest, and overtones of honeysuckle and wet wool socks..."

"She gets looser under acceleration in the rear end, as though it has it's water disturbed by a too-low pickup"...

:D

Esoteric to say the least.

We need to get John and the other experts on here shirts made that say "V-drive Sommelier" or something.

Gonna wait for Bergerons analysis of the shaft.

After some waiting and a bigger piece of material from the broken end, Bergerons analysis of the shaft showed no defect in the materials hardness ( that was all that was analized ) the conclusion was possibly an improper seating of the prop but since we did not have the missing piece it was determined that a new prop shaft would be made for team Bloodshot.
:thumbsup to Bergeron Engineering :thumbsup

Have them make it in 1 1/8" and pay the difference! ;)
