Good to hear it's all tuned up!!
Wow I thought the water we boat in was bad!! Looks like the best thing about that lake are the boat docks!!
It was a great run at the checkers. A failure out of our control left a bitter taste but in the end we accomplished what we set out to do. On 10-4-13, while out testing in Parker we blew the motor up, on 10-6 (sunday) we pulled it and assessed the damage. Complete bottom end failure had us wondering if we could make the date. Rick made a few phone calls and on Monday the block and heads were dropped off at QMP and all parts were ordered. Brad at QMP stepped up and delivered, on 10-11 we had the block back with the new parts and on 10-12 I picked up the heads. Everything went to Ricks shop for the assembly. Rick stepped up big time and delivered the now 547 on 10-18. Rick didn't stop there, he got to work on the pan modifications and external cam driven oil pump all the while I was buying and retrieving parts from all over west coast and Joe was working on the new oiling system and cleaning of old parts. 10-19 we dropped the motor in at my shop and took it back to Joe's to finish the install. Fired it up that night at 10:30 and we were on smelsomore on sunday 10-20. On the next day we smoked the ignition, again Rick came thru with a spare and we were back in business. 10-23 while in Parker testing we smoked the tranny. I had stayed back one day for business reasons and it paid off. Got word to Marc "SFV2RVR" that we needed a tranny and by 11:30 I was at Art Carr's place picking up a tranny that had been on the shelf waiting for Stan or Lee from Schiada to pick up. Art appologized for not having the backup tranny I ordered on 10-10 ready and I was off to Parker. Got there by 6 and by 7 we were back in the race. With no practice time we qualified third in a three boat field, Joe had a handfull with the qualifing set up and damn near pitched himself. Satuday morning on the day of the race we set out under the cover of darkness at 5:30 am to launch at Red Rock and work on the plate set up. By 7 am we were at the driver meeting and getting our arm bands and pit passes. We knew we had a shot at the podium with the set up we had. 10:15 am we took off for 27 laps of intense racing, Joe hammered down a few good laps in the low 8 minute range then on the third lap started making his move on Gary when we lost the propeller due to shaft failure. That was the end of our race. Three months for three laps but as this team has proved we won't quit, we wont give up and we will be back. Special thanks to Tony, Rick, Matt, Joe, Brad, Marc, Dennis, Ryan, Steveo and Driveby who will never see his prop again :thumbsup
I feel worn out just reading all that. An insane amount of work in a very short time frame. You'll have plenty of time now to get that beauty dialed for next time around, without all the stress :thumbsup. Regardless of the outcome you guys all deserve a high five for hunkering down on it. :cool
Thanks Shane, even your Pops was impressed with the boat, especially the v-drive oil sump / breather :thumbsup

As clear as the river is Glenn you might be able to find it if you have an idea of where it broke?
RD
OK Dave, $100 and a case of beer "REWARD" for finding Drivebye's prop lost along Riverland before their boat launch. Payable TG weekend in cash :thumbsup
Broke right at the prop :thumbsdown
Yes the prop had just been done by Wilmington propeller
Still, your lucky it didn't tear into the bottom of the hull..
What do you think about testing the shaft to see if the material has the proper tensile, yield and hardness. A lot of people use this stuff and don't have problems.
Gary had the same failure... I'm pretty sure his is 1 1/8", but I don't know what material.
I cannot get the pic to turn upright. It shows up correctly on my computer before the upload. Oh well you get the idea.
I hope I can make it out there next year for the festivities.

Fuck that shaft :thumbsdown
I will put in a K-monel 1" shaft and test this winter and spring, it won't break :thumbsup
Do yourself a favor and go 1 1/8" I don't know of a boat with any kind of reaonable power using 1". Every v drive ski race boat i know of is 1 1/8"
I will go 1-1/8" after we test and find the set up were looking for. To change means pulling everything out and that will happen next spring.
For now I wanna run the boat and find its sweet spot

Hahaha until you know, then it's done, ranged, checked and Done, haha! Let me know the next time you come out towards Elsinore. I'm close, and my beers are cold!
:thumbupn the 1 1/8 shaft
Really enjoyed your build, first class all the way !

Most the new rigs step up to larger prop shaft if with big power. Being that yours is a handful in the top end, the boat is lighter, and smaller, I wouldn't think you would ever run into these kind of problems. (As well I'd wager the prop shaft materials back then were better then They are now)

I was wondering, Is this covered by insurance? LOL!

This little piece is being sent off to Bergeron Engineering (where shaft was made) for them to test and give an analysis of the material.
Should take about 10 days :thumbsup
Maybe a dumb question but when going to 1 1/8 shaft do you have to change the strut and thru hull fittings for the larger shaft or is the strut bushed and just a bushing change required?

Your's is a smaller lighter boat that was not originally built with big power (I'm not sure if you went through it or not).
