For some reason, much like seafood beef is more expensive when you get closer to the source. We just walked out of plantation they wanted 13 bucks a pound for fajitas. Steaks were closer to $16 a pound.

It’s not like that here. Local raised beef is nearly the same ( burger is cheaper) than the beef at Safeway or Super 1. I bet once you get situated, you’ll find a reasonable source.

It's early and I'm trying to like it, I really am. But I have a bad taste in my mouth over the forced move. The people are quite nice in my experience. I had someone apologize profusely for not holding the door for me because he didn't see me. Drivers in my area are quite different than Ca. Folks allow each other to merge when appropriate rather than going out of their way to close the gaps like they do in Ca. People actually dim their high beams for oncoming traffic. I don't know about the rest of Ca, but this was really an issue in the high desert. The roads are in great condition compared to Ca, it seems they use their gas and registration taxes to keep them up. Ca roads were beating the crap out of my cars. A funny thing about restaurants, in Ca, the booths are pretty tight, especially if you're a hefty person. Here, the seats in booths are pretty far from the tables. I've seen more people out here have to sit with their legs apart to accommodate hanging bellies than I've ever seen in my life. It seems harder to find healthy alternatives in restaurants. Usually, that's not an issue for us because if we're going out to eat, it's to splurge a bit. Right now, we're living out of the travel trailer due to some work we're having done on the house, (paint, driveway expansion, electrical work). As a result, we're eating out quite a bit and BBQ every day is not an option. My wife is getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Something about her blood type. They don't touch me, she can't walk to the car without getting bit up. To the point that her body is producing so much histamines that her ear closed up. Hopefully anaphylaxis doesn't follow. She's trying all kinds of stuff to keep them away without much luck. Prices seem pretty similar to my area of Ca, meat is actually more expensive here. I think the only thing I'm really saving on is gas and car insurance. Housing prices seem similar to the high desert, but if I'm being honest, I'm in a nicer neighborhood than I was before. Hopefully my arrival doesn't drive down home values.

That’s what I said when my wife took me there for our anniversary. It’s worth it though. If you’ve been to Javiers, it’s that, but better IMO.

That being said, I’d take something like El Campion in San Juan Cap over this all day, but those aren’t exactly date night spots for my wife.

I use lemongrass also. I've just never been able to get back to the original formula I made that smelled so good.
Deet is poison. I only use it in extreme situations, but it does work.

Funny you should mention that joint (El Paseo). We made the decision to try it based on it being busy. It was Tex-Mess, it was not bad, but my wife was not a fan. I'm still not a fan of Tex-Mess, but this seemed like a better version. Kinda like the Patio, it's a one and done experience. The cicadas are crazy loud, when I first got out here, I was sleeping in the travel trailer in the driveway (told you guys I was going to be the trashiest neighbor on the block) and woke up to the sound of what I thought was the AC on my house failing. I walked outside to find it was these bugs that were loud as shit.

Quick update; wife was feeling homesick for the holidays and still hasn't got her nursing license transfer complete (this has been frustrating). So, I sent her home to visit family and friends. She had a good time, but when I picked her up she said, "I'm home".

What we left isn't how she remembered it, we're in a better place now. From friendly people, to nicer area, to just overall feel. She told me she got it out of her system and is happy here in Texas. (minus the nursing board dragging their feet).

Just wanted to share a happy story about the move.

Oh, and I paid $2.26 for gas, so there's that. We're going to go to the gulf coast for a short vacation. It's about twice the drive as Ventura was, but I didn't see any warnings about having to lock all my shit up at night in the campground due to roaming bands of zombies picking through campsites.

You see it with a different lens after living somewhere else. One of the harsh realities is going from a place where people are friendly and say "hello" when passing on the sidewalk, to the rudeness and indifference that is experienced in most of SoCal, and any big city really. I played a game when I was walking through D.C. and Baltimore over the summer where I would say hello to people I passed on the sidewalk or in stores and I could see it genuinely made them either surprised or uncomfortable. Sad, really.

Yup. Good for yall doesn’t take long to notice your in a better place. Also everyone needs to see there “people” every now and again. And not sure where you plan on traveling to but if your going to Port A drive another couple hours and do orange beach Alabama or Destin Florida is my suggestion on the gulf coast.

People always remember things better than they were.. even short term. It doesn’t take long when ya go back to shatter the rose colored glasses.
