This is very good advice about the DMV.
even after I notified them and registered my vehicles in TX, they sent me renewals, late notices, and threats to seize any assets in CA every year for 3 years.
Been lucky so far. Only vehicle giving me hiccups is the motorhome. It seems if there is a loan then it can be an issue. Also the motorhome is a 20 year loan with 4 years left. Guess the loan was transferred at some point.

2019 Tesla paid for : no issues.
2002 Silverado paid for : no issues.
2018 Mercedes financed through Mercedes : no problem.

I never did the change of address through CA DMV. They can suck....you know what.
Lo and behold though they do know where I live. Guessing change of address with the postal service busted me out.

Got word a few minutes ago that my Hesperia house recorded and funded. Huge burden off my shoulders. Took a leap in of faith and bought the new house without a contingency because houses out there were selling quickly. Last time I took a risk and carried two house payments was in 2008/2009 and I wasn’t hanging on to my hat and turned a pile of cash into a mound of debt. We dug out (no BK) and swore never again. And then we did it again. At least this time it worked out.

High Desert, Hesperia. It was nice when we moved up there 31 years ago. The commute to the Inland Empire was getting worse every year. My hours weren’t bad, but my wife was having to leave 1.5 - 2 hours early to make it to work on time.
We moved from Redlands to Idaho 2 years ago. Hardest part was leaving family and friends. Just have to budget for travel and make it a point to go see them every so often.
Have to say, I have not looked back! Figure my cost of living has dropped close to $4000. a month! On a fixed, retirement income, that’s huge! You really have to experience living out of an expensive state to appreciate it! Example, my GMC 2500HD Duramax registration is $67 now. I think the last one I paid in CA was $800. Oh, and the roads are better here! Hopefully you are taking your CA salary with you since it sounds like a company relocation? I also believe moving costs may be deductible if it is, unless they are paying the way?
Good luck and enjoy America!

Taking my Ca income with me but losing a third of our household income because now the wife has no job and job hunting at our age sucks. EEOC or not, we know how the world really works. Seems like groceries are about the same. Things like registration are way less and they seem to actually use the money for infrastructure instead of pet projects. We stopped at a rest stop for a nap and it is NICE! Not a single splinter to be found in the glory holes. But seriously, super clean, secure and not 70 years old.

DMV, moving from Kali is a Major PIA.
You can't just do a change of address with them and call it good. Every vehicle, they must be notified. And still they will screw with you.

State Board of Equalization is worse.
Say OK you moved, filed correctly, pay income tax for the half year, whole year whatever. The next year you don't file?

Get ready keep accurate records.
They came after me not once, but twice.
Years apart for the same damn thing.

"Property Taxes paid on the home, ( I no longer legally owned.) So you must have earned income..." FFS.

24 Pages faxed the second time. Including the 11 page OG response when I beat it the first time.

They have to come after us to justify their jobs. Kali has Fallen

Congratulations on the Texas move. Hope good area. Because some around there not.

Area was the determining factor. We saw some really nice houses built next to absolute shit holes. I’m probably gonna be the trashy one on the block. It’s a nice well established neighborhood with a retired police chief on one side and an electrical engineer on the other who by all accounts is a bit of a recluse.

I looked up Azle Tx.

If you like swap meets/flea markets/craft fair etc stuff go look up First Monday Trade Days
In Canton Tx. You’re about 80-90 miles away.

It’s always on the weekend before the first Monday of each month.

It’s been a fixture there for over a hundred years I think? It’s huge. Call ahead and rent scooters from Dixie scooters, or find another vendor. Ya gotta check it out!!!

I guess I am one of the few that doesn't let humidity bother me. Growing up in Ohio, humidity was terrible. Even living in Florida for a few years I never minded the humidity.
I spent a few years in Texas while serving and I loved the feeling there. I am sure at my age I would like it even more now if in the right place. No big cities for me give me the smaller more laid back areas and i will do just fine.
Congrats on the escape and I wish you well in your new home. Make sure to get out and explore everything that the state has to offer. Lots of history and fun things to do.

I plan visit the Confederate museum in White Settlement before too many of us Californians get here and decide it needs to be shut down and the town renamed. I can’t wait to get settled so I can explore.

Welcome to the land of the FREE!

Let me know if you need help with anything. I'm just 45 minutes north of you in Alvord. One of the hardest parts for us making the move here from So Cal was not having the network of friends to call on. 6 years later we have a great group that will drop whatever to help.

Good luck on your new adventures.

You’ll file a 540-NR part time/non-resident tax return for 2024. You pay tax on your income earned in CA and nothing to CA on income earned in TX. That will be your final return in CA.

Can I get your new address for my invoice? 😆

@Kachina26 , read your first post in the thread, and definitely had flashbacks. We hadn't been in the same home as long as you, but really the San Gabriel Valley had been "home" for both my wife and I our whole lives. I had two houses outside of there, but not very long each. As fate would have it, we left before it was very trendy. In our case, more necessity. It worked out for the best I think.

I could write a TLDR post to rival the longest winded poster we have and still not cover all the things that “went wrong” over the last year that made all the pieces fall into place on all of this. I’m super grateful for everything that ended up going right in the end and look forward to all that’s to come.

What does that other insurance thread say about hail damage if you park anything outside?

Congratulations but you know you're leaving the good weather!

Which is why covered parking for everything I own was not something I was willing to concede on. It’s all covered.
I’m kind of surprised how many people that live here where it snows don’t have a garage.
Some might have a detached garage. Better than nothing but you still walk to and from your garage in wind, rain, snow.
We have a two car attached garage. Sure beats brushing off your car before you can drive off.

I was told the reasoning behind that is that the constant melting of the snow while in the garage after driving causes rust. True or not, I have no idea.

I’ve gathered salt deteriorates concrete garage slabs.
Here in Idaho the contractor sealed the garage floor as part of the deal. I wanted a concrete pad in front of the garage and he told me he’d pour it but if I wanted it to last I would need to seal it. 3 car garage wide by 25’ took 5 gallons of sealer. About $200 for the sealer and I rolled it on. Got it from a wholesale supplier, not HD stuff. Once and done they say! We’ll see.

Salt sucks! I was probably the only psycho washing his truck in those cold ass winter months. I sprayed under the truck every spring I was in the salt. I faired okay. But I do not miss the salt.

I do miss the slower living, cheap fuel, friendly people way lower cost of living.

Good luck in Texas OP. Positives and negatives everywhere.

You’ll like it. We landed a few miles east of Azle, in county as opposed to city proper. Spent the first year in wonderment. You mean I can do this? I can do that? Crazy how much you can do here. Best wishes in your new adventure.
I’m on the Parker side of it, also in the county I’m told. Funny that my window tint got me failed on my inspection. I went to a shop recommended by a coworker after we had lunch down in Midlothian and got failed. Can you recommend a place that won’t hassle me about tint? I don’t have limo, just 18%. PM if you prefer.

That's bullshit. IMO. Find a hole in the wall shop, with a Texan that doesn't resent people moving there from Cali. As of 2025 no more inspections. Not saying thats the situation. But..
It's there K.

My Nephew lived in, built a house in Midlothian. At day care, my Niece was the little salt in all the pepper. He was a transfer from General Dynamics, his co-workers hated him, the new house, great package to move there. No mercy. He quit, went to work nights at a power plant, (Navy Nuke,)

Attended college. Got his degree during the day, got the hell out. Good luck there K.

I’m sure there’s some of that. Can’t seem to get a call back from any of the contractors I’ve reached out to. Finally got one to call me back. I think this girl thought I was a plant. I wear a flat top probably look like a cop to some people.

Gotta be the CA plate. Maybe keep a Trump hat on the dash? :)

I’ve got tint on my all windows, including the windshield and no front plate on the Tesla and never had an issue.

Get rid of your California number or try contacting with a Texas number.

Welcome to Inbred Central. Only half kidding. The local area code is a good idea. The pad sounds good but that police chief thing, not often, but if local to the rural area, sometimes works both ways.
The good news is the Tweakers there say the Meth is better up here in, "The Dirt..."

Sorry, I have no mechanic suggestions for you. But I have seem similar instances as others reported. I’d also recommend as others have, a local mom and pop shop closer to town like Decatur. Decatur likely sees more out of state cars and may be more accepting. Changing plates will help a lot for the future. That’s the first thing I did.

Next was to learn highways dont start with “the”. It’s just road number (287 or I35 east, etc.) or its name and direction.
