Detained until Dec 20...Let her rot over there...

WNBA’s Brittney Griner says Russian interpreter at questioning provided incomplete translation

Nation Jul 27, 2022 11:38 AM EDT
KHIMKI, Russia (AP) — American basketball star Brittney Griner testified Wednesday at her drug trial in Russia that a language interpreter translated only a fraction of what was said during her questioning and officials instructed her to sign documents without providing an explanation.

Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in February. She acknowledged in court earlier this month that she had vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage when she arrived in Russia but contends she had no criminal intent and packed the cartridges inadvertently.
During her testimony, the Phoenix Mercury standout described making a grueling 13-hour flight to Moscow from Arizona while recovering from COVID-19. Griner said she still does not know how the cannabis oil ended up in her bag but explained she had a doctor’s recommendation for it and had packed in haste.
She recalled getting pulled aside at the airport on Feb. 17 after inspectors found the cartridges.
Along with the interpreter who provided an incomplete translation, Griner said she received neither an explanation of her rights nor access to a lawyer and was instructed to sign documents without an explanation of what they implied.
After hours of proceedings she did not understand, she was allowed to hand over her personal belongings to a lawyer before being led away in handcuffs, Griner said. She said she received only a cursory translation of the allegations during a Feb. 19 hearing where a court sanctioned her arrest.
Griner faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of transporting drugs. Her trial started July 1, and Wednesday was her first appearance as a witness. The court outside Moscow held five previous sessions that were short, some lasting only about an hour.
It is unclear how long the trial will last, but a court has authorized Griner’s detention until Dec. 20. She went to Russia to play for a Russian team in the WNBA’s off-season.
During Tuesday’s court session of about 90 minutes, a Russian neuropsychologist testified about worldwide use of medicinal cannabis, which remains illegal in Russia. Griner’s defense team has submitted a U.S. doctor’s letter recommending the basketball player use medical cannabis to treat pain.
Griner testified Wednesday that she was suffering from pain from injuries sustained during her basketball career. She emphasized that cannabis oil is widely used in the United States for medicinal purposes and has less negative effects than some other painkillers
A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said last week that the legalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use in parts of the U.S. had no bearing on what happens in Russia. 😁
The slow-moving trial and Griner’s five months of detention have raised strong criticism among teammates and supporters in the United States, which has formally declared her to be “wrongfully detained,” a designation sharply rejected by Russian officials.
Griner was arrested in February amid high U.S.-Moscow tensions ahead of Russia sending troops into Ukraine later that month. Some supporters contend she is being held in Russia as a pawn, possibly for a prisoner swap. American soccer notable Megan Rapinoe last week said “she’s being held as a political prisoner, obviously.”
Russian media have speculated that Griner could be exchanged for prominent Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, who is imprisoned in the United States, and that Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia for espionage, may also figure in an exchange.
U.S. officials have not commented on the prospects for such a trade. Russian officials have said no exchange could be discussed until the conclusion of the legal proceedings against Griner.

This was posted on FB. God Bless them boys...

Dear Mrs. Griner,
We hope this letter finds you in good health and we understand you are having some rough times in your life. We are a group of old Vietnam Combat Veterans from North Carolina. Our average age is around seventy years old. We call ourselves, The Bunker Boys.
We spent a lot of time living in rat and snake-infested holes in the ground known as Bunkers. When we were not in the bunkers we were crawling through the jungle being shot at and shooting back at little people wearing black pajamas. We must be honest and tell you that the only thing we may have in common with you, is that we too, were drafted.
We noticed you were drafted number one in the WNBA a few years ago. Since we all were drafted we thought we might let you know what it was like when we were drafted.
Unlike you, most of us had no college. The people of the United States drafted us. We consisted of all colors, religions, and personal beliefs. We had no choice of which team we played for; Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines. We were sent halfway around the world to fight and kill people we didn’t know in a place we had never heard of. We were paid, we know you can relate to this, $3.00 a day and required to work 24 hours a day if needed. When we returned home, many, or most of us were treated very badly by our fellow Americans. We were spit on and hit by bottles and rocks as the police stood by and watched. We did not complain, we just continued on in life and made the best of it. We fought for God, family, country, and of course, the Flag, and the National Anthem; a poem that was written by, of all people, a lawyer.
He wrote the poem as he watched bombs fall on and kill fellow Americans. Ever since that night, our nation has played that little poem before millions of social functions. For some people, it’s just a little song. For a Veteran, it is a reminder of how many men and women of all colors have given their lives so the rest can have the right to be free.
We found in our research that you requested the National Anthem not be played at sporting events. We find it odd that now you are requesting the citizens of the United States to pay for your release from a jail in Russia. Yes, we the taxpayers are paying for all of those diplomats working on your release.
Our Government told you, and all fellow Americans in Russia, to leave Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. You play basketball in a country that is known to treat Americans badly. You fly a great deal and must know by now, all the rules of what one can bring into a country. All of us who travel know the rules for entering a foreign country. You are a guest and must go by the rules of the land.
By your own admission, you were attempting to bring an illegal substance into a country that is known for its long prison sentences. You had to know this because you are making $227,000 dollars a year to play a game and hold a college degree. At six feet nine inches tall, you know that security officers are going to focus on you from the moment you stand in the boarding-pass line. We also noticed that you are now saying you placed the drugs in your luggage by accident. Please, that is something an 18-year-old would say. We also found out that your net worth is somewhere around $5 million bucks for playing a game. For old guys like us, living on a fixed income, that’s a lot of money for just playing a game. Don’t get us wrong; we are not against you. We all went and fought so all Americans can have the freedom to make their own choices. We just hope the next time you have to endure the playing of that little poem, you will pay close attention to the “Land Of The Free” part.
Wishing you the very best,
The Bunker Boys…

I’m not up for trading prisoners, for any political reasons.

100 years ago, marijuana was not illegal anywhere.

I see this incident similar to someone from Arizona, where it’s ok to drive with a load concealed weapon, drives into Nogales Mexico, and forgets its in their glovebox.

They get in an accident, and a gun is found. They go to jail, and possibly everyone in the car.

Brittney says she didn’t know those vape cartridges were in her bag.

I remember Wille Nelson getting caught with Pot in Texas. What happened there?

Fuck Putin!

It's one or the other-

Either you forgot it was in your bag OR you have a doctors note. Not both!

You enter a foreign country breaking their laws, that is on you. She packed her bag, she knew what she had packed. Her Russian basketball team even told her not to pack anything questionable, since they knew of her past recreational activities. My gut says her Russian basketball team told Russian officials they want her checked, because they don’t want any of that BS around the team. She knew the risk and broke the law.

Now, I don’t agree with the 9.5 year sentence that was presented today. Maybe a year or time served, but I 100% disagree with a prisoner exchange and the special treatment this individual is getting from the US compared to other US citizens in Russian jails that have gotten zero help from the US government.

Seems like she got treated like a normal person for once.

I like the "we'll trade you the merchant of death for a basketball player" scenario.

People sitting in jails in the US for Marijuana use and Brandon puts a priority release on this? WTF?

I'm guessing prison in Russia isn't the all you can eat buffet and TV along with the weekly orgy that is American prison. I think they still do hard labor camps and prisons. And the communists take a very dim view of homosexuality. All kidding aside, she's probably in very real danger.

Watching her behind bars today, I had to think about if she does get back to the U.S.. I can see her going away and avoiding any and all spotlight, as this must have been a Soul Searching very frightening time, sitting in a Stinking Jail Cell in Russia.

My question is, why is our government stepping in to make "deals" as if this ok.. but, in reality, it is still illegal on the federal level here also🤷🏻‍♂️ so now are they saying our "federal government" is ok with it? Are they making changes to the laws for everyone? Or just him?

Just more propaganda imo..

Definitely yes.

Wikipedia has a good article on her and they only refer to them/they/it as a gay woman.

Heard the news this morning that Putin is willing to negotiate a prisoner release. How long it might take or if it even happens? We will see.

She has been locked up for close to 6 months now. Longest I've been locked up was 36 hours and that was abot 35.75 hours longer then I want to get locked for again. And I was in an easy county jail with a dayroom with television, a bunch of books, and private cells. Food sucked, but it should.

Meh.... His point is funny, but the reality is a bit stretched. I know there are still parts of this country that take weed seriously, but I'd wager the majority of those still in jail these days for "Marijuana" are there for far more than possessing a vape pen oil.

I live in WI and they take it seriously. Second possesion charge can be a felony. Just possesion, no attempt to distribute. I know of a couple people that have been sentenced to 1.5 in prison for the second offense. I agree, they must have not taken the charge seriously or something else to piss of the judge, but simple possesion was all they were charged for and convicted of. Seems kind of silly, but the law is the law. Play stupid games................

That's right the law is the law! Maybe us taxpayers should pay to have our country's BLM protesters sent over to Russia and protest the unfair sentence of a black (wo)man🤣🤣 I'd be fine with that👍👍

Thinking about it for a second, it is not a WI thing. You can get caught with meth or H in Green Bay, Milwaukee, Madison and a few others and get away with a slap on the wrist. The county I live in, if you are going to break the law, bring bail money. And be ready to hire a good lawyer.
