Why the noise or why did I do it?

I would imagine the noise is the air is being squeezed out of the space.

Why I did it is because I got paid to do it. :)

I drilled one once in my former life too. Maintenance was trying to figure out how to make a machine quieter that had a gilmer belt, I told them to take off the pulleys and I would fix it. Fuckers didn't believe me. They did when I was done. :) "Pretty good for a kid, ey?" I read a lot of engine/motorsports books when I was in school. ;)
Why do you talk peeps out of it

For a 10 to clear the distributor don't you need an offset manifold? Or does the chiller allow it to clear?

A 10 will clear but it’s tight. This is with a super mag 3 and small cap. Not sure what ignition you have but a low profile with “crab” style cap and the addition of chiller height you’d probably be fine.

Yes. :)

Sounds like the 10 clears anyway. A 12 will clear with a chiller.

Dang. I like it TV.

Thanks for the picture.

Real world problems right there. Currently an HEI distributor.

Just asking outloud here. :)

Say you wanted to make 8-10 psi max on a sub 500inch with a chiller, for adiabatic efficiency, I think it would be better to spin a bigger blower slower than spin a smaller blower faster.

I know turbos and EFI are the way to go, but way more complex install and doesn't have the oldchool cool look of a supercharger and carburetors.

What say ye?

Brian
That's already a proven fact Brian. I have a couple of stories I can tell you when I am not running off to Foxs to meet friends, one about dyno comparison of an engine with a small blower before and after chiller, and another of a 516 cu in Whipple engine I did (no dyno)

So... big blower ran slower?

8 or 10 good for what I am doing?

Just run an 8 and be done with it. Boost numbers will vary due to a lot of contributing factors, head flow, cam design blah blah blah. I run an 8:71 roots 1-1 on a 475 ci motor and it made 8 lbs with a whipple intercooler and it makes 12 without. If your not making the boost you want then spin it a little harder. It’s not gonna create enough heat to worry about only shooting for 10 lbs of boost. If it were up to me I would run a psi or a screw type blower but in our class of racing we are limited to standard twist rotor and are limited on our overdrive. Just my .02

What’s a good blower set up for a 1990 mercruiser 454 mag? I’ve owned turbo & a whipple system in the past but never got around to installing them so I sold them.

Sounds like you don't deserve a third setup. :)

Too. ;) :)

Cause it is way overkill. :) Plus it gets in the way of the distributor on a Chevy. On a Mopar, heeeellllllyes, not so much. ;)

Prolly could make that boost with an 8, but spinning it hard, thinkin spinning the 10 slower would work. Just picking peeps brains.

Brian

Biggest you can go on a BBC without the mag/distributor hitting the blower is 10/71. If it was me, I would get an offset and go with the 14.

if all you care about is looking cool why not get a 871 with the ultra cool mad max on/off switch on the dash? then you wont have to make boost when you dont need to. sorta like a whipple. :D i'm sure you give aprox. zero fucks about the results of this thread anyway lol

I say bigger is always better, but just not when it come to a closed hatch boat application, room will likely always be a issue. I love a old style blower but when connected to a Bravo can really be a handful around the dock, especially a floating dock with a good current. Seems like you're showing off revving your shit up but the reality is, I'm just trying to get the thing in gear without putting my prop on the bottom of the river.

10-71. you can front offset if non intercooled ot standard offset if intercooled. 1:1 pulleys intercooled on a 509. That's my next set up.

Just call me old school, been running a 10;71 on my 21' Howard V drive and 548 ci for 15 years and I love the surge and whine and performance. Oh I run a superchiller @ 12 psi boost too on Av gas.
