My wife and I talk about it daily. We are native CA people. But, this state just keeps getting worse and worse and unless there is some kind of hostile take over, this state will be screwed for many many years. We often talked about retiring somewhere else as we are attracted to other areas, but our disgust of CA is growing strong.

So, we are starting to talk seriously about where we can go, and like many people, work is an issue. I'm a little more flexible as I work from home, and many of my customers are also leaving the state. But, I still have to be located in the south west, within an hour or so of a reasonable airport. Our favorite option is the St. George, UT area. Las Vegas is driving distance as that is where many of my customers are going.

How many are talking about it and at what level?

Post where you would like to go if you could get the work.

Since my CHP attempt fell through.... Its a DEFINITE possibility for me. I would just need to decide what I would want to do for a living and find something before hand and all that.

If I were to leave I would look to go to AZ, Phoenix or Prescott, or like you, St. George, UT...

I just moved into an "all white" neighborhood. :p Which is ironic because I'm not "all-white." The neighbors keep grumbling about something but I can't make it out...

Well until they put a port somewhere other than the coast I don't believe I'll be leaving anytime soon.

I thought you already moved to Nevada?:D

LOL Well, working in NV and living in CA is not the same as being completely out of the state. It is almost as if I never left. :p

As soon as I can find work, we're gone, heading for either Phoenix area, or Austin TX area.

We loved Oregon, Maryland,, and Austin, Texas.
Parker is still tops too.

A place with no State income tax is a BFD when you retire.
11% raise in our book.

Friends moved to Sand Point Idaho to get away from the abandon shopping carts and graffiti.
They have August and winter.

We shall see......

2 Things could happen in the next year

1-Nada helps me modify my current loan and I keep my house and stay for a little longer...

2- Loan mod is a no go and I stop making payments and saving every dime for when my house is either short sold or we are booted.

I'm ready to leave. There is a chance that my wife can job transfer to the Phoenix area and I have some feelers out for work.

Shall see......I am no where near being in love with this state.

Hell yeah. If I could make a profit on my homes right now I'd be gone. Not telling where though. Don't want to take anybody with me but my family.

Booze does not play a big part in our lives. Like the idea of being a few hours from Powell, Mead and Mohave!

I agree. That whole area looks like a good candidate. They get more of a winter than we do now, but my wife and kids would love that. Also, lots of homes on acreage which is what we want.

I have a serious question. What is the allure of the Phoenix area. I mean beyond better gun laws and stuff like that. The local lakes are better than here but to really boat you still have to drive 3 hours to Havasu or Mohave or something. It's getting to be pretty crowded. Houses are cheaper but not by much anymore. Crime isn't very low. Basically it all boils down to my last point. Everybody is leaving California and going there. The problem with that besides crowding is people leave to get away from the crap here but take the crap with them. I looked at Idaho for about 2 seconds until I realized a bunch of Californians are going there too. F that.

Ditto that excet for the Austin, TX part. We wold love to be in the Phoenix, AZ area but there is currently no aerospace work there for me. Right now the hot places for work in my industry are Charleson, SC and Mobile, Alabama.

I'm like you...I don't get the Phoenix attraction. And I've spent a lot of time in the Phoenix area. Even had my truck broken into in Mesa.

Idaho kind of looks like the destination for the yuppie type of crowd, kind of like Seattle 15 years ago. And you are right...they bring their crap with them. They don't like to be controlled, but they immediately want to make the new place a better place to live. Pisses the locals off something fierce...and usually tell the new people, if you want to live like you are in CA, then stay in CA.

If I was set $$$ wise and close to retirement I would probably look for some acerage and a house away from everyone. I could hoonestly live about anywhere but our family is in So Cal,No Cal and Utah. If we moved to say Texas, Tennesee or Iowa where my wife might be able to job transfer we are leaving our families behind. We struggle to see our parents/family now and if we moved more than say 3-5 hours away they would never be able to see us unless we flew back.

Home prices/rent is good in phoenix are right now and work would be better than say montana.

Politics, taxes and fees are rediculous and show no sign of slowing....

I've already put in for my Montana teaching credential. Jeff's job is on the internet or traveling all over the country anyway, so that doesn't really matter. I've also seen several jobs available that I'm qualified for at the state and national park level. It's just a matter of finishing up the remodel so that our house is sellable. Hoping to list in May. As soon as it sells, we are outta here. We've been looking at properties and jobs up there for two years now. Been up there 4 times, once in the winter. Total of 10 weeks so far. Every time it gets harder and harder to come back to California. Hopefully next time I go up there, I don't have to come back except to visit mom and dad.

Katrina (our daughter) just got accepted to Montana State University. She'll leave in early August. She's hoping to hear from University of Montana though. That's her first choice.

I can't wait to live somewhere pretty, with nice people.

My wife's first choice if money wasn't an issue, is Montana. She has a ton of family up in White Fish. The cost of living is actually pretty high in that area because of the resorts. If I could pull of working from home up there, I would.

Not sure what you mean by to really boat? have you been to any of the phoenix lakes? I was born and raised in socal and to really boat there you have to go to the river IMO.

I left California for the last time in 1987, after living in the South Bay (Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach) San Francisco, Ventura and San Diego area (Santee).

Been in Parker, ever since.

The Missus and I will retire in about 5 or 6 years, and then head north. Eastern Oregon or Northern Nevada, depending on which one has the best tax advantages for us then.

I promise to visit you guys twice as much as I do down here. :D

You know where our current home is. It is almost ideal for us, except it is in CA.

But you experienced personally the crap CA will do for money. They ruined parts of your property for a builder that left them holding the bag on acres of semi developed lots and an unfinished road that needs to be rebuilt since the builder(s) "forgot" to put a drain system in and "forgot" to meet code on 90% of the road.

Touche but I'm not saying SoCal is great. I am saying it sucks and Californians are making AZ suck. Keep going somewhere else and that house and view will be cheaper with no Cali BS.

Yep, AZ is becoming Kaliforniacated but it is still far better than where I came from. I think it is just the whole liberal shift of the country. Pretty hard to escape it anywhere. Hell, look at the elected officials in DC. That says it al right there.:thumbsdown

Oh, and just to be fair, that house was selling over $700k back in the land rush of 2005 when all the Kalifornians ran the prices up;)

I've met over a dozen people this summer that had moved from California to Benton County in TN where my river house is. The whole county population is less than 17,000. They seemed like normal gun loving nuts like us so we welcomed them with our normal southern hospitality. This past weekend my cousin called and wanted to know who put up my metal boat building. Said she had a couple from California that had just bought 70 acres and a house and wanted to put up a metal horse shed. Said they were just south of my place. Looks like a bunch of you folks are moving south...

Packed up 3 years ago in January. The move was not because we disliked California, rather it was an oppurtunity that we took full advantage of. Sure, there was the small talk like; if you could move where would you want to go? We still own our home in Placentia and plan to keep it. Now my wife and I say how happy we are because were not in CA. We are in Henderson NV now and not planning on leaving any time soon. Great neighborhood, excellent school and school funding. There is little to no traffic, we can hear the coyotes howling at the moon from the mountains behind our home and I can be riding in less than 30 seconds. Yes it gets hot, then in fall it gets windy and winter can be cold.. I think those are called seasons. California has them also but there all within 10* of each other.

The other areas you mentioned are very nice as well, I personaly think any move out of CA will advance your quality of life.

Yep. Nashville area is where we are trying to go. Hopefully any other Californians that come will be those who believe what our founding fathers believed... It would be so much easier if I had just been born there.

i would have to say its about the same. (not in distance) it seems like with in this past month traffic has gotten 10 times worse.

when i lived in irvine, it seemed like the traffic was bad up until you hit green river road. then your breakin wind at 90

You don't realize what liberty's and freedoms your missing until you leave California. Move to a FREE State. One preferably without income taxes. I left California in 2005 and will NEVER move back. I live in Texas now after living in Havasu for 3 years. Texas is GREAT! No income tax, great schools, roads, and a economy thats not in the crapper.

I would like to buy something for retirement in the Show Low area or just about anyplace between Williams and there. If I could find work I would be living in the Havasu place full time right now. Retirement is not that far away but i also need to be able to get out of my place in CA if the prices ever improve so i can buy something else.

phoenix is great for me. moved to prescott from pennsylvania 10 years ago. that place got old real quick so i moved down to the valley. been here ever since. i've lived in central phoenix, tempe, ahwatukee, mesa and now sun city/northwest peoria. loved every minute of it. if you love the outdoors then this is the state for you. and for whoever said we are "starting to get smog". did you just move here or something? lol. the brown cloud has been around for as long as i've been here.

I agree, I love Henderson, I can still ride from the house, 15 minutes from the lake, only an hour from Needles. Even an hour from snow skiing/boarding on our mini mountain.
