Interesting thread. Lots to consider before moving away from friends and family. Course, with family it sometimes sounds pretty damn good! My ex and I made it 3 years is Paulden, AZ, small town north of Prescott and Chino Valley. Bought land, built a home and when all that was done and the excitment wore off we just got bored. and we had friends just down the road (yes, dirt road!) It was just beautiful and the warm summers with monsoons and a little snow in winter (i'm native So. CA, never saw much snow) it was great. Just missed friends and family. Maybe if you have kids you'll meet folks with similar interests. 3 years to the day, we were headed back to sunny So Cal

I don't get the attraction to Oregon. Leaving California because of the runaway liberalism ? So you plan to move to state where the speed limit is 55 border to border and strictly enforced. It is illegal to pump your own gas (even into your motorcycle). There is no sales tax there. Why ?? So the poor people that work for cash under the table don't pay any taxes at all. The property owners and people with jobs pay all of the state taxes. And to top it off it rains 300 days a year.

I'd move to Afghanistan first.

Depends on where in Oregon.

Eastern Oregon is very conservative, more like Idaho. While they may be governed from the top by the libs in Portland, the local politics are quite the opposite.

And the weather is nothing like the Oregon Coast. It's warm to downright hot, sometimes 90s-100 in the summer, and cold and snowy in winter. Nowhere near 300 days of rain. More like 90 days a years and only about 10 inches total a year vs nearly 40" for Portland.

I don't know where you drove at 55, but the Interstates are 65.

I stand corrected. 65 on rural interstate and 55 everywhere else including freeways and highways. Eastern Oregon more like Idaho. Temp there this October AM is 27 degrees. You can still have it.

Interesting reading, I have never been to Arizona or Cali. I grew up in Okla in a town about 400 people (nice movie shot in our town). I then moved to a suburb in KC, then lived in Houston for 2 years (big shock) but I loved the no state income tax then transferred back to a place on a lake south of Topeka and then moved again to just S. of KC. The only reason we left Houston was my wife wanted to get back to her family so I transferred back to my old company (natural gas company both of us work in the industry). If I had a choice of moving from KC it would be to Collville WA or to Louisiana and Texas. The only thing I hate about saxeT is I hate UT and their fans.:puke:

Speaking of Oregon and randomly moving someplace better... I have a really close friend that spent a year of almost nightly hour long phone calls trying to convince me to move to Portland where she was. Made it sound like the garden of paradise she did.

I was almost ready to move out there sight unseen, and I finally flew out there for a week to check it out. We put over 1000 miles on two rental cars in 6 days, drove all over the eastern part of the state and the coast. Drank several "sample trays" at the Rouge Brewery in Newport and then...nearly got arrested skinny dipping at 3 am with three hot chicks in some freezing cold lake. Went hiking in several huge incredible forrests, saw beautiful waterfalls, got the holy hell scared out of us by a mountain lion, blew up a Honda Civic in the center lane of 5 lane Portland rush hour traffic, and therefore actually caused the biggest traffic jam I've ever seen in my life extending behind us up the mountain for miles. We ate at endless really cool restaurants, saw and did amazing things.

She couldn't have sold the idea any better and all in all it was a fantastic vacation. I couldn't possibly have packed in more experiences if I wanted, but somehow I knew in the first two hours of my Oregon experience that I was never going to live there. Beautiful scenery, but it was just cold and depressing, everywhere. High of 74 degrees low of 54 all week...middle of July...not good for summer loving guy like me, I came up with too many negatives for all the positives. Like, I loved the coast except all the surfers were all wearing heavy wetsuits and looking miserable, etc. For lack of a better description, there just wasn't a vibe that really gripped me there and I guess I thought I needed that, so several years later, I'm still here in IL where it's currently cold as fuck and raining for the 400th day this week. Someday maybe I'll try to explain why I moved back here after living a few years in Las Vegas. Holy hell am I stupid!:D

Funny as hell that someone can actually remember the name Wakita. I could give you a history lesson of how the town was named that way, but I wont bore you. Some of the best times of my life were spent there for 18 years, most my family still live there, it was wheat harvest time when they were shooting that movie and all the farmers were pissed, you had to have a special tag to get into town. When the aunt meg tornado blew through town I was there the night of filming and it was a cluster you know what.....At least they still have the Twister museum..LOL...

Thats too funny, you would of been the last person I would of thought that knew about Oklahoma, especially since your a so cal surfer. Thats cool though anyone that can say Wakita, Beggs or Bristow knows Oklahoma. Better names you could of mentioned would be slap out, Look out, Alva, Cherokee, Salt Plains, Balko, Shidler etc etc I could go on and on..There is a shot in the movie that shows one of our valve settings located on the river and its near Pawnee Ok. I go to Bristow a few times during the year dealing with meter inspections. Enjoy eating chicken at Strouds. Small world after all... As I re read my post I hope you didnt get offended about me saying you are a so cal surfer. Im just a lurker and the biggest waves I have ever seen were in Cozumel, the biggest waves I could ever ride would be in my crapper when I drop a deuce.:drnkfr

Because "Sooner" sounds cooler than "head starter" or "cheater" during the land rush.

Did they have to kick Tom Foozes's ass to get it? lol

I think it's a great story :)

Nah, they bought it for a nickel and a 5th of old crow...Its actually pretty neat that we still have the original farmstead of 80 acres, some good hunting on that property also. Family owns around 1k acres in that area. Its nice to go back and visit but I would never move back.
