So I was having dinner with Beermaker (Justin) the other night, and we started talking about watches.

I know that guys who are into cars, are generally into watches.
Lots of car guys here on RDP, anyone into watches?

If so, what you got?
And what is your "grail watch" - the watch of your dreams?

I like cars more than watches....lol

I have:

Gucci
Seiko
Fossil
G shock
Lumtec

My lumtec is really nice..quality peice

I wear the g shock daily and would probably buy another.

No desire for a 5k+ watch. Honestly the lumtec was more than I would spend but the wife chipped in for our 5 year anniversary

I haven't worn a watch since the swatch. I hate wearing time. It always seemed to make the days drag out. I've got a few people I know with 20k $ watches and I just don't get it. 20k can buy a lot of hooked and blow.

20+ year old matching Raymond Weil Stainless Parsifal's (wifey and mine), made when they had solid 18K gold links and Sapphire bezels.

So the story is, an old girlfriend had given me another Raymond Weil, so wifey bought the above Stainless Parsifal for me. I gave the old one to my brother in-law, a machinist, and I'm pretty sure he destroyed it within a week.

I'm about ready to vomit right now, below is the watch I gave him....

Tag Aquaracer with diamonds and black face... Best bling for the buck lol. I love it. Can still wear it everyday without freaking out too much.

Just got Jenn a Breitling for x-mas...

The next watch is a Breitling Colt Crono with the blue rubber strap... funky but I dig the shit out of it

Just got a new G-shock:thumbsup

Nothing wrong with a G-Shock
My "I'm doing outdoorsy shit" watch is a G-Shock GA100-1A1
This watch is a little tank.

Over the years, automatic mechanical watches have become a minor obsession for me.
There's a ton of history involved, and they've been part of the greatest achievements of mankind.
Space...railways/transportation...pop culture/movies...you name it, there's timepieces involved.

I know it's an obsession because I know the model numbers of my watches LOL

I've got a low budget cool car and my watch is the same. Lol

Citizen makes a great watch...they're the largest watchmaker in the world
They own Bulova, which was a respected American watch company that started in the mid-1800's.

They also own Accurton (Bulova-owned when Citizen bought them), which has a really cool history.
Accutron was the go-to timekeepers of the lunar missions (everywhere but the astronauts wrist s and fascinating history there as well) and anything government/critical, including the military.

There are a few Lum Tec's that I've been eyeing.
They make a solid watch that's great value.

You, too...let's see some pics

Nixon is generally one of the better fashion-type brands, but they actually have a high-end line, super-solid watches.
Here's one...it's special because it has a Valjoux 7750 movement.

nixon_automatic_chrono_ltd_1.jpg

Why is that cool?
Rolex, Breitling, Omega and even many $20k+ watches use this movement

Here's some info on the 7750:

If you're gonna tell us what you have, you gotta post pics

Subscribed... James's 40th is this year. :hmm:

Watches can make really great gifts, and here's why:
When you delve into the history & tradition of the iconic watch brands and models, you can really find some great stories.
Sharing this history & tradition, and relating it to the person you're giving it to, makes the gift so much more meaningful than "I got it on sale at Jared" :D

And the really cool thing is, vintage watches are like vintage cars.
There's a huge market, you can buy from reputable sellers, and there are some good values...plus they really hold their value, along the same lines of other fine machines like firearms and, well, cool classic cars. And you can find absolutely mint 40-year-old mechanical watches...

The finest timepieces are mechanical automatics IMHO.
Much more complex, and just way more cool, than a quartz for a gift.

My wife bought me a 2 tone Rolex Datejust when we got married. 23 years later, she wrapped the original Rolex box up and put a note in it to go buy any new watch I wanted. Ended up with new Rolex GMT Master II.

Eterna and Gendis watches.jpg

Had this Quartz Eterna gold dress watch since 1980. The one on the right is a 17 jewel manual wind ladies gold Gendis from the 60's. Seen hundreds of swiss watches my brother had that he bought repaired and sold. He fixed many of them using this jewel watchmaker lathe I still have. I appreciate the little lathe more than any watches ;)

My lathe is similar to the Bergeon model. Check out their site and prices, ouch!> http://www.ofrei.com/page_205.html

Omega. I have the same exact watch as in that movie, actually. I love it don't need any other watch, and will give to my son one day. Feels quite good to wear something so heavy on your wrist.

...further proof that cool watches make great gifts for passing-on significant personal meaning

One of my "grail watches" is an Omega Speedmaster Moon watch, an original issue winder from the 60's.
It's a tribute to a great time in American history...and is still used extensively by both NASA astronauts thru the Shuttle era and likely beyond, as well as Russian Cosmonauts.

Check out the right wrist...

NASA even tips their hat to this watch on their website - one more reason why I want one:

More here:

Cool shit

^ Great link! "Buzz recounted in his autobiography that, during the EVA, Neil Armstrong left his own Speedmaster in the Lunar Module as a replacement for the in-cabin timer which had malfunctioned." Great little part of history

You should get him a Rolex. Timeless (no pun intended), extremely durable (never have to take it off), and they have an incredible market as others have stated. Plus if you get him one you are setting yourself up to get the hers model.... Just saying. :D

I have that same watch. After about 10 years it has charging issues. It doesn't want to charge up anymore without direct sunlight.
I got a new one for Christmas. Different model but similar style.

I wear the Breitling shadow fly back with the mother of pearl dial. I've had it a while and love it. It was one of the first nice items I bought for myself. Wear it everyday and it reminds me that hard work pays off...

Wife has a gold women's Cartier tank. It was my mother's that was handed down to me. It had to be completely rebuilt. After it was completed I gave it to my wife as her "push present" after our daughter was born.
