Exactly, this is why comedy is dead. Jokes aren't funny anymore because you have to make sure you aren't offending anyone... All of these awards shows have a historic lineage of being a roast on each other where they can poke fun at themselves. Rock's comments were right in line with that. Slapping someone for making a joke about you, as a celebrity, at a public event that's main purpose is just that, makes you look a bitch, not the guy getting slapped.

If the Hosts of these shows didn't make jokes they would just hand out the awards and go home and the show would be over in about 36 minutes.

Regardless this will be the most talked about awards show, for the next 24 hours, then nobody will give a shit and even less people will watch next year.

Maybe a bit late to the game on the comments, but here's my take - Chris Rock didn't mock "Will Smith's Wife," he mocked Jada Pinkett Smith, a public celebrity with her own career and someone who puts it out there for the public to see, and as such, has opened herself to comments, criticism, and jokes, especially in a forum where jokes are not only acceptable, but also welcomed and encouraged. Will Smith made this about Will Smith.

Would I have done the same for my wife? It depends on the situation. My wife sits on the boards of a charity and the PTOs at our kids' schools. If comments or criticism are made about her in her capacity as an exec member of these orgs, then no, I wouldn't have reacted that way: she knows what she's getting into when she volunteers for these positions and knows that you can't please all of the people all of the time (if ya can't stand the heat...). Conversely, if someone starts talking shit or messing with her at a bar when she's just there to have a good time, then yeah, we're gonna have a conversation...
