Pretty sure this has been brought up before.
I was watching a FB reel regarding such and most of the comments alluded to most, at least the younger crowd, don’t carry cash.
I use card almost everywhere except fast food and a few other places but I don’t ever have less than a couple hundred bucks on me.
I always carry cash. $300-$400. variety of bills. I make a habit of also paying the tip in cash when we eat out. It helps the servers

Also, easier to split bills when eating with friends.
We went out with friends and some friends of friends. Some dude wanted me to download this app that you input each meal, appetizer, drink etc. Then you can separate everything down to the amount of dip you ate.

I handed him $100 for our $80 dollars worth of stuff. Fucker still sat there and calculated it all out 🤦🏼‍♂️. And then he wanted me to Venmo him instead of taking the cash.

A few years ago I started taking all the $1 bills from the change I got and put it in my desk drawer instead of my wallet because ones were always crumpling and didn't fold very well for my flat wallet. It's sort of became a habit and now I have about $1,500 in $1 bills stashed in the bottom of my drawer at work. Next time I go to the strip club I'm getting bottle service🤣

Great drive thru near the office. Insert this piece of plastic I got in the mail, hit $500, asks how I want it and I drive off. When I get low, I stop for more.
Pays better than a slot machine.

That would be the last time i ever hung out with that dork, i would also question the character evaluation your friends have to invite such a douche to dinner.

When you go out with a group the assumption is the bill get splits by the head count, if you don't like it, don't come.

Fuck that.. I will admit I spend 5-7k eating out each month.. but I got three kids or am always out with biz associates etc.. and I always buy.

If I tried to track all that I’d lose all my mind.. but more to the point if I ever got to a point where I thought. It was necessary I’d figure out a way to make more money. lol

Always a couple hundred, can't buy Lotto tickets on a card..HAHA
I do the same whenever I'm traveling out of the local area. I had an incident once when I was about 400 miles from home where identity fraud had my bank shutting down all of my ATM & Credit Cards. Had I not had cash on me to buy gas I don't know wtf I would have done to get home.

Although we keep most of our money cash at home, I don't usually have any cash on me, we have a card that gives us good rewards, for the most part I pay with that, my wife pays off every month...I have learned that when I carry cash, I will buy just dumb $5 hear, $7 there, $10 over here, on just shit I dont really need...when I have to use a card, it cuts down on that stuff....

Old buddy of mine always called it "out fumbled."
As in "He out fumbled me getting his wallet out to pick up the check."

Another "friend" is cheap as shit and always has been. A small group of us went out to dinner and he had to leave early, which he normally does. He left enough to cover his part, not a dime more. I picked up the tab and we ended up at a party later that evening. Another friend, who was at dinner with us thanked him for picking up the tip at the restaurant and told him I had picked up the tab........Smoke came out of his ears because he missed out on a free dinner.

Yes. Absolutely. I always have $200-$300 in my wallet as an emergency stash. I also carry between $100-$200 for random spending money. Jeff has his own cash. I hate the rare instances when I don't have cash, and I have to use a card for an $8 transaction.

exactly, im not worried if you ordered a beer or water, your plate cost xx and mine cost x. its an even split or with the group i normally go with, its a battle to let someone split it. if your friends are that worried about being a couple bucks up or down with you, they are not the type of people i want to hang with. i will admit, i have been asked to go a dinner or something and wasnt able to afford it, come up with some excuse and have them tell me, dont worry about the cost, i got you. its a 2 way street, i have told the same friends "i got you". it all comes around in the end.

So I order fish and chips and you order a filet. We pay the same price? I drink an iced tea and you have two top-shelf old-fashioneds and we pay the same? I don't think it's that difficult to estimate the cost of what you ordered, pad it by 10% and then add the tip. But that's me. I understand many people prefer the way you are describing.

as long as its not a production, that works too. you know what you ordered cost, throw down enough to cover and extra for the tip. if i see a calculator or math being done on a napkin ill save us both the embarrasement, pay the bill and if we go again ill ask for a separete check, which i hate doing,

I probably wouldnt let you pay in that scenario lol. Because your food and drinks are costing what my cocktail is.

I’ve always at a minimum made sure that whatever myself or my wife orders is paid for including tip, appetizers and napkins I may have used.

I need to clarify our friends always pay their way. These were their “friends”. You know the ones you’ve known since being 5 years old and just can’t cut em loose because they’re basically family lol.

We go out with a group of friends once or twice a month.
Don't know why, there's always an argument over the bill...
You put in too much...no you put in too much take this back...no I had one more drink than you..so what take this back or I'll be pissed...the waiter loves us...:D

If you go eat with me, I buy.
I ain’t rich (subjective) but I do well and have plenty of disposable cash.
Most of the people I go eat with are family or very close friends and I appreciate them much more than worrying about a few (or few hundred) bucks.
All of the people I hang with say thanks.
Breaking bread with people is a personal thing.
I avoid eating with salesmen or people that are using it for their benefit.

We don’t play the -split the check shit! - we have our friends trained! If it’s the first meal out together (very rare) we pick up the tab. Meals with long time friends are equally handled! We know who’s turn it is to pick up the tab. Breakfast, lunch, or high dollar dinner! Is no matter- But always have a few Benjamin’s in the wallet!

This is under the assumption that everyone in the group is an over payer. The flip side is like you describe when you have some guy that maxes everything out and throws down a 50 when it's 150... Likewise a douche move as well. Also if it's that lopsided I'll just tell the person that had nothing dont sweat it i got you.

But if appetizers come to the table im paying for them if i ate a bite or not, anyone that wants to start splitting hairs it's like cmon, im here for the company not to do an exercise in accounting.

I don't ever have these issues because i only go out with people with a like mentality

You're right. Appetizers complicate things. We usually don't have a problem whenever we go out with friends. Most of the time, it's more like how 500bbc described it, with everyone arguing the other person paid too much. I can't recall the last time there was an issue with some schmuck underpaying. Usually it's the opposite, or we argue over who is paying for the entire meal.

Back to the subject, it's a good reason to carry cash. I can't believe the server appreciates it when they get 5 different credit cards to run. "Here's my cash. No, don't worry about the change," is a lot more efficient, IMO.

I like burgers and beer.
Lol

I'm with you though. I usually pick up the tab. I would rather not feel like I owe anyone and I don't feel bad if you buy me a beer and I forget to say thank you.

Usually 5-6k in my pocket or truck, can't swing the deal without a fist full of $100s. Can't tell how many boats/motors I've bought at half or less of value, a mess of hundos make peoples knees wobbly.

5-7k can go pretty fast if you’re entertaining. I know of guys doing 20k+ on just that.

You’re spending money to make money.

Always. I have a smallish front pocket money clip/wallet. Not a George Castanza fat wallet. When I was younger I would put the hundies on the outside of the money clip. Now I keep them on the inside, with ones on the outside. LOL

Regarding group meals, eating with an occasional group, one guy always order the rib eye. I'm here with my one chicken taco. Everyone knows he's gonna do it. We all started making jokes cuz they want to split the bill evenly. One time I hollered down to his end of the table, "ya gonna get the rib eye or not?" I don't think he's ordered one since. LOL

for years I collected $1 bills had 5000 plus, so I told my wife to take to the bank and put them in a account, when I got home she said everyone there looked at her like she was a stripper lol

This. We don't go out to eat much anymore as my wife has Celiac and it is a pain. When we do go with friends I usually just pick up the tab, unless all the guys just throw out the card and say chop it. I am not sitting around trying to figure out who owes what. If we are friends then I am happy to buy your meal.

2 stories. In Quebec w/2 buddies, 3 am, my turn to buy fuel. Insert card, doesn’t work. Go inside, doesn’t work. Pull out cash, prepay, we’re on our way. Call Amex next day. They tell me that I need to call ahead if I’m going to be out of country - security by them. Actually thought it was a good strategy.
Buddy of mine always pays cash at the HD dealer, parts guy always sees his stash. Parts guy ends up getting divorce, goes to my buddies place with his almost new enclosed bike trailer, says he needs $1,500 cash fast. Buddy says I’ve got $1,0000, if that will do it. Done. Divorce guy doesn’t realize he has $ in both pockets, and knows how much in each. Just 2 examples where cash is king that don’t involve anything illegal. I did try and buy the trailer for $1,500- he said you Nan use it anytime you need it.
