I always told my clients to stay off social media. I can't tell you how many times I would use a person's social media posts and pictures to destroy them in custody battles. I just never could understand how a person could take the stand under oath and blatantly lie. " No, I never drank while taking the kids out on the boat!" Then you start pulling out the my space or FB pictures with them drinking and quotes about how much vodka they drank while boating with the kids.

Or the idiots who claimed they couldn't work and needed spousal support due to back injuries. Then we pull out the pictures of them riding and jumping quads at glamis etc.

I just don't get the attention whores. LAM!!!

Cheers, Steve
Yup, the Attention is the DRUG. Its the dopamine pumps that keeps the people coming back like a slot machine. I never understood it, but its proven science.

Social media has completely ruined the meaning of "friend"... JMO

The term has been used too loosely for at least the last 30 years of my life. I call my son on it sometimes.

Lemme see if I got this nonsense straight.

Conservatives complain that FB censors their speech. FB denies it of course. Then this far left activist FB employee comes on and tells us that not only does FB have a unit the censors conservative speech but that she is upset that her work in this area has been shut down and she wants to continue it. That is why she is mad.

She wanted to continue censoring conservative speech, under the guise of fighting misinformation of course.

You can’t make this shit up

Fake news has become a lucrative business, just follow the money, where avoiding facts and embracing vague rhetoric is a recipe for success, In other words, the politician who wants a vote, or the fake news or web site that just wants a click.
In a world where telling too many uncomfortable truths can end a politician’s career, or cancel a news TV program, what choice do they have but to seek a route that is neither truth nor lie.

Yup, the Attention is the DRUG. Its the dopamine pumps that keeps the people coming back like a slot machine. I never understood it, but its proven science.

As a PI, social media has always been a dream come true. On MySpace I had many thousands of friends. FB caps friends at 5,000. I brought on close to 2,000 "friends", many who also have at least 3,000 friends. Crunch the numbers, the reach to other people is insane. FB defaults privacy to "friends of friends", so all you need to find is a friend of a friend (your target) to hit pay dirt on your target. I stopped at 2K, but imagine having 5K friends who have at least 3K friends = 15MM. That's a big number for a local geographical area.

My take on the popularity of FB is that it's a supergroup. We have a subconscious/reptilian brain response to survive, and belonging to groups is indeed a survival response. People have always belonged to groups to survive. Don't believe me? I (used to) look at targets in other countries too. The same asshole/post whores you see on FB in USA - they are also on Mexican FB, or India FB, or Vietnam FB etc. FB in other countries is identical to FB USA. The Russian FB, VK is a lame attempt to compete with FB USA.

I also wonder if those who despise it so much are the same ones who hated everybody in HS? You know, the "fuck the reunion I hated all those assholes" people. Once again, it's a belonging, or not belonging, to a group deal.

I have FB and I use it to stay in touch with friends and family. I don't get sucked into the politics or stupid, trivial crap and I keep my account locked down to close friends and family.

I really do despise FB and the lot. I really do think it's a cancer on society and the downfall of decency and respect and appreciation, etc. etc. I can reach out to family via text, email or phone call. I don't need to see what they're eating or when they take a shit. I get that it's a lot more access to family and friends lives and keeps you a lot more connected to them but I guess I don't miss what I never had. I also believe in the theory that you build "family" and close friends as you move along through life. I don't necessarily need to stay in touch with distant relatives just for the sake of them being relatives. You build your tribe / group as you go with those you respect, get along with, appreciate their company, etc. For the record I could take or leave reunions and catching up with people I went to high school with. If I run into someone, I enjoy hearing what they've been up to and saying hi. I got along with most everyone in high school. I still talk to the friends that were close and those on the outskirts, if I see them I say hi, "good seeing you, glad to hear everything is good" and move along.

Now, a lot of people argue that RDP is a form of social media and I agree, it 100% is. BUT it is a different animal than FB, Twitter, Snapchat etc. etc. RDP and other "forums" are topic focused. For the most part the vast majority are on here because they have a common passion of boating. A sub product of that is all the other shit that we talk about but there's that bond of boating and a lot of the time it centers around havasu. That is tribalism at its finest. Because it's based in commonality it is more controlled than the fire hose of "anyone and everyone" community that lacks that common bond that centers things. There's no common bond to the big social media companies. Yes, there's sub groups but still, you belong to the bigger wide open no commonality group first. When FB and the rest were really gaining popularity, a lot of people predicted forum based boards would cease to exist. And some did but from what I've seen that was due to poor management. RDP is a great example of how untrue that theory was. Dave started this right around the time the big social media platforms were really gaining steam and it's grown into what is basically the largest boating social platform on the planet.

If it was on 60 Minutes then there's a hidden agenda. They are one of the cogs in the liberal media. They only feed us what they want us to believe. Just sayin' that it's not some great whistleblower journalism, it's propoganda.

I am convince this is a Trojan horse. If you listen they were advocating for more censorship not less. One guess who that censorship is gonna be directed against
