I remember a thread about the Mrs. getting a puppy and you were dead set against it...Have you come to adore the dog???

She fucks up my previously perfect lawn(I'm Mexican ya know):D, she has eaten several pairs of shoes(some of which were brand new), we have to worry about getting a sitter for her(good thing we never go anywhere), she ate a pair of the Mrs. sunglasses(not cheap ones),etc., etc., so I'd say no. :D

I read an article a while ago and it rated dogs based off of temperment. I was surprised at how far down the list MOST bigger dogs are. I remember smaller dogs such as Cocker Spaniels, Pomaranian's, Terrier's, etc. were MUCH higher on the list than bigger dogs such as "Rotweilers, Pit Bulls, Mastifs, German Shepards, etc.

The number of bites from smaller dogs was significantly higher than the bites of bigger dogs.

The study also said that dogs such as Pit Bulls, Rotweilers, etc. get such a bad reputation because of the amount of damage that they do when they do bite. It may be infrequent, but it does happen. Instead of a simple puncture wound, like a small dog would inflict, it is a loss of a body part & a ride to the ER. If smaller dogs were able to do as much damage, the ER would be a much busier place.

Before I go back to that park I'd get some pepper spray or a stun gun. Or maybe a hunting knife ? That would be one dead dog if it came after mine again.

We are usually just out there for an hour or two. I don't know of any protocols. Just register on the site (it's free), introduce yourself, and reply that you will attened or you can just show up at six with your BM and introduce yourself there. It's a very friendly bunch.:D If you register on the site you will get e-mails if a meetup is cancelled or changed etc...:thumbsup

Speaking of mean dogs. . . anyone want one?

Story, Jeff's cousin loses her house with property and has to move into an apartment. She has a horse, 4 goats and a lamb. We have 11 acres of weeds. She asks if she can bring the animals over if she does all the feeding and clean up. Sure, I say. Then, after the animals have been here about a week, she says she also has a dog to bring over. I said I didn't really like the idea, but we could try it if it stayed in one of the kennels. One day, I get home and there's 2 dogs in the kennel. Not the deal, but whatever. So when she lets them out for excersize, they chase my cats (not for fun, but to eat). Then they crap in my grass and I have to clean it up. So after a week, I tell her that the dogs are a problem and have to go. 3 months later, they're still here. Jeff and I both have asked her probably 4-5 times to get rid of them. The aussie is vicious. It jumps real high, above the top of the fence, but not over, snarling and baring teeth the whole time. I'm afraid to walk next to the kennel. I finally told her yesterday that I won't have that dog on my property anymore. Now she says how she's probably moving at the end of August (hinting that I'd just keep it until then). Thankfully, I said she needs to find it another home until September, then because her moving idea boiled down to "I saw an ad on Craigslist today". She doesn't want to take the dog to the pound because it will have to be put down.

In the dogs defense, as long as she is there, the dog is an angel. But when she's gone, I'm afraid of it. The kind that will attack you through the fence, try to bust through or jump over it. It wants to eat me. I realize it's a good dog for her, but she doesn't have a home for it. I hate to see it be put down, but I don't feel that should be my problem. I have been more than accommodating with the other animals, not even charging her for water.

Pisses me off that she lays the guilt trip on me.

The only problem my female has ever had has been with 2 boxers ganging up on her. The male always has other males attack him, but that's normal. I've never seen him be the aggressor except to strange men who come into our yard.

And I wouldn't take them to a dog park because other people don't know how to control their dogs.

My girlfriend brought home one of those rescue dogs. It got out (one of the many times) and chased three sets of gardener's out of the neighborhood. He likes kats, just not men or gardeners.

LOL.. Why don't you train it?

RD

Because if I open the gate, it will bite me. Now, if she wants to PAY me to train her dog, I might be willing to go out and greet it with a bat until it realizes I'm the alpha. Could make for some good summer money. Nevermind, she's a single mom with 5 kids and works one day a week. My chances of getting paid aren't good.

You need to get a cesear mask.

This would accomplish 2 objectives.

1. You could then control this semi-red zone dog.

2. It would make you appear more alpha-like. :p

Best thing about an Aussie is the most loyal dog there is
Worst thing only to their owner took some time to chill mine out was like my chow

Tootsie, My 2 1/2 yo Keesh had his first a week ago with no residual effects and then just Friday had a mini-second one. Vet put him on Phenobarbital. He's acting a lil drugged and dopy so I guess we'll have to lessen the dose. Maybe I should sample some, who knows it just might improve my disposition.

Rio,

I had 2 dogs on Phenobarb and it drastically reduced their quality of life. People will argue that it reduces seizures but both of my dogs turned into basket cases even with a lesser dose. We chose to take the second dog off of it a just chanced it with the siezures. Good luck with him.

But somehow fail to see 2 threads in less then a year about weiner dogs that did the same.. As well as the latest a wiener dog that gnawed a numb toe off an adult.

Yes pitbulls can be agressive dogs.. Yes most of them ARE dog aggressive.. YES IT CAN BE TRAINED OUT OF THEM. Yes they are less prone to bite people then just about any other breed. And finally yes they have one of the best temperments of any breed, as touted by the AKC.. (Dog experts for you brown).

RD

I have several friends that have weiner dogs. Take them everywhere with them too. Including MY house. They are VERY aggressive dogs, period. Small, yes. But aggressive none the less. I have a 110lb Rott who is a big baby to say the least and a Queensland who gets along with just about everything except someone wearing a hat ;) These weiners literally "attack" my dogs when they come around. Small dog complex maybe? ;) I end up putting my dogs up to avoid a dog fight because they are not courteous enough to leave their dogs at home or in the vehicle even after they know what happens. I doubt they would do the damage that a pit would do if they fought but they are much more aggressive than a few of the pits I've seen lately. I'm not a fan of pits, personal experience and society has me fearing them for the most part but I have seen some VERY gentle pits.

Bottom line is, if your dog is the least bit aggressive toward other dogs, keep them HOME. They don't belong in a dog park.

BTW, next time your in town Tony, LuLu is welcome to hang out here and play with the boys. Plenty of room to play and its nice and safe. :D

Dog park.....Don't do the dog park thing.

To much owner drama to entertain a dog.

Our storage yard backs to a dog park and every day there is some lady yelling at someone in total hysteria over whatever. Not the same lady over and over but there is constant crap going on in there.

So I throw the ball for my lab anywhere but there.

Crap, I'm sorry to hear that. I've wanted for a long time now to take my buddies down to the dog park in H.B. They love the ocean, but that's been my concern about the other dogs. I was just over at my freinds house next to my office and he's got a pit. I was just talking about the bad rap they have, cause of the owners, and here I read this.Unfortunatly they lock when they attack and the only way to get them apart is to beat it like a egg. if you don't have a bar to stick in there mouth. I like the idea about the mastiff park. May check it out.

How many pitbulls have you beat like an egg, that have locked onto sometihng?

I'm thinking I might just dispell some myth here..

Boy, we sure have our share of dog discussions on these boards, don't we?

BTW, I love all dogs, it's many of the owners I'd like to put a bullet in. Dogs are the product of their environments, much like people. Some people are beyond rehabilitation and need to be removed from society. I feel that some dogs are that way also. But most are good, no matter what the breed.

Just saying I've had pitts for the last decade or so.. Been around a shitload of them.

Never seen one "lock on" to something that it couldn't let go of, if it was told to?

Absolutely they can hang on a rope, and absolutely they can clamp the holy shit out of something if their motivated. As far as hanging onto it though, that's just will power. Not some "lock" mechanism.

If ya don't believe me look it up? Or ask any vet, etc..

There's no bone structure that "locks" the jaw or anything of the sort.

I've heard the same thing. No "locking" just very strong jaw muscles.

Dave,

Sorry to ruffle your feathers, that was not my intent. IMO the problem is this.
You are always gonna have aggressive dogs no matter what the breed or the pedigree or the owner, we agree on that. Yes little Weiner dogs and chihuahuas can be aggressive and get away with it.. When you bring dogs together you can encounter problems and fights. They are animals and dont rationalize like humans. They have the pack mentality and the whole alpha dog thing blah blah blah. I get it. When ANY OTHER breed of dog gets into a fight or a squirmish it makes a few aggressive moves to get its point across and then moves on. Or, the owner is able to control the dog or grab it by its collar or leash and seperate the dogs. When a pitbull gets involved in a fight, it only knows one thing and that is to destroy whatever is in front of it. It grabs on to the neck and will not let go. It has no "quit button." This is the part about the pits that scare the hell out of me. Its like having a psychotic girlfriend. They are great until you cross them and then they try to stab you in the neck when you are sleeping.

Even if every bad thing that has ever been said about Pit Bulls is true (and much of it isn't). Those traits would have been bred and trained into them by crud breeders and handlers. If every Pit Bull in the world was to disapear today, those same cruds would simply move on and screw up some other breed and nothing would change a bit. Thus breed specific legislation against them has no chance at all of ever doing any good..Case in point, Holland has just repealed their laws aginst Pit Bulls, because after 15 years they have not seen any reduction in serious or minor dog bits at all.

P.S. Pit Bulls jaw strenth is not super strong. It is just very strong for their size. A big pit's bite force is about the same as that of an Americian Bulldog or an avg sized male Rott (between 300-350lbs). An Old English Mastiff has about 1/3 more jaw power than a big pit (over 550lbs). Good thing OEMs are a gentle breed.:D

If that were true then everytime a pitbull would get into an argument that wasn't intervened on, the other dog would be dead.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that Neva got away from my mom and got into a major tussel with a neighbors dog. Nobody broke it up? Yet neither dog is dead. How is that possible?

The answer is simple.. Something happened in doggy language (I'm not going to speculate what, becuase I'm not a dog)..

They tussel'd a bit and it was determined who was in charge and then it was over. There was a couple stitches involved, but no missing limbs.. No lock jaw, no dead dog etc.. After the husky submitted, Neva got up and walked right over and sat next to my mom like nothing ever happened. The husky did the same from what I was told?

Now I'm not saying I haven't seen a pit go absolutely ape shit on a dog with every intention of killing it. I have, shit i've seen it in my own dog before. I've also seen lots of other breeds of dogs do it as well. There was a chi wa wa in my house at the river, that I swear to god put an extra 20lbs on it, and it would've murdered every living thing on 4 legs for miles.

Truthfully Tony, when it comes to dogs.. As a person I'd be a shitload more scared of your dog coming down on me then your average 50 - 60lb pit.

Pit on person = person whoop the pits ass
Pit on Dog = Dog is getting it's ass whooped (don't much care how big or what breed the other dog is)

people keep saying how dangerous they are... I'd much rather square off with any of my old pitbulls, then a really pissd off saint bernard, or a rottweiler, or a German shepard???? Large breed of dog.

Rio

I'm so sorry to read this.....good luck with him. That Pheno is nasty stuff, we have the cougar on it and he's in a constant daze, very sad

Sorry, Katz. :D

They're so cute!!:thumbsup:D

Ok sorry............carry on with the pitbull stuff...

On the pitbull side of things.. I just don't have the time to argue it anymore.

Either you love them or you hate them it is what it is.

To promote that hate though, bothers me considerably. To equate it to something a little more personal..

There are people out there that think boat racing should be illegal. It's too loud. It's too dangerous, people die, blah blah blah..

The only thing you can do is try to correct some of their misconceptions, and stick up for what you love? If you don't understand it you probably never will. If you do then the other side just seems "crazy" to think that way?

If pitbulls could snap at anytime and kill people.. Then they sure as shit wouldn't be using them as therapy dogs. They sure as shit wouldn't use them for search and rescue. They sure as shit wouldn't use them as drug sniffing dogs, Nor would they use them as bomb dogs etc..

Dogs are dogs. We have two toy poodles. Ones great.. the other ones nuts. I know several people with labs. Some are great, some of them are so wound up you dunno WTF they are gonna do. Just becuase they haven't bit someone yet, doesn't mean they won't. Dogs are dogs regardless of the breed.

If you can't control the dog, or if your worried about the dog attacking another dog? Then don't take it to the dog park. Bottom line. I don't take my dog to the dog park, becuaes I know she's aggressive in certain situations. I'll tell you what though, my dog was raised around children and is more gentle/tolerant then any other dog I've ever seen around infants, kids, etc..

To say "breed specific" that a pit shouldn't be around kids, but a lab is ok? Is stupid.. If you truly believe that, then I'll bring my pit, and my buddies fucking nut job lab and you can pick which one your kid pets and lays down next too and cuddles up with.. Or better yet goes face to face with for a kiss on the nose.. LOL It'd be a pretty clear decision in about 2 seconds. As well it'd be the end of these online debates eternally if I got it on film.

Tony, at this point in time he has been on the pheno for about a week and half. He's a real space case at the moment so I'll give it another month or two and if there are no seizures then try reducing the dosage to where it's tolerable.

Mike, yes they did an entire blood panel, liver test, etc. The only test he hasn't had yet is the brain scan. Since he's in the parameters for epilepsy, that won't show on a brain scan. You know me, any more little glitches and he'll be down for the scan.

If he doesn't get over the "spaciness", next month at rattlesnake school I'm sure he'd just curl up with the snakes and take a nap...

Hope your week is turning out good.

RD

I agree with all of this except the part about a pit whooping any breeds ass. There are breeds that can literally kill a pit in one bite. OEMs were bred to fight bulls, bears, and lions. A pit simply would pose no challenge to one. Argintine Dogos are bred to bring down boars and they have been mixed with mastiffs etc to make them bigger and tougher than the Argintine fighting dogs they are bred up from. The same can be said of Presa Canerios, DDBs, Bullmastiffs, South Africian Boerbols etc..Ever see all that loose skin on a Neopolitan Mastiff? That is there for the purpose of protecting it from exactly the type of attack a tight skinned little pit would be bringing. Pit Bulls are far from the only breed with a fighting past and they are far from the most formidible fighters. They are just the breed that is small enough for humans to easily control, yet formidable enough to make for an interesting fight with another dog their own size. Turkish Kangals and working great pyrenees etc are bred to work solo and protect their flocks from packs of wolves, I seriously doubt one would have much trouble with a pit.:hmm

Not a chance, my Bella's a big slobbery lover, not a fighter. :drool

I'm just talking smack here.

It's just that the super dog, that can kill all other dogs, myth is just as bogus as most of the other myths, that surround this breed. There are dozens of breeds that have more formidable fighting tools than pits have, including other larger, more powerfull, hopefully former, fighting breeds and breeds that have been bred to take on wild predators that are far tougher than any pit bull.

Dave, I love reading your posts and opinions on pits, bui's, etc. Very well stated arguments and opinions. It makes this site great. But as much as some people are biased against pits, you seem to be just as biased towards them. Dogs are dogs, agreed. Any dog can have shitty owners and be raised improperly. You are without a doubt a good dog owner. Train and treat your dogs the right way. I've had dogs for 30+ years. Dad rasied bull terriers for 25 years. Had labs for years. Have a DDB now. I don't remember ever having one of my dogs attack another dog. Defend themselves against attack, maybe. But you have stated several times about how your dogs have attacked other dogs as well as being attacked. Do you think maybe that makes a more valid argument for people. Knowing that your dogs are well behaved and brought up, yet still are aggressive enough towards other dogs to start fights? Just asking? As stated in this thread, dogs don't have great reasoning skills, they are instinctive by nature.

The argument that you can find a lab someplace that is a little psycho may not be that valid. My dad is a dog trainer and has been for almost 40 years. Seen, and been around lots and lots of breeds at more events than I care to remember. Temperament issues aren't necessarily just stereotypical.

I know, this has been hashed out hundreds of times before, but I missed all those discussions.

JBG, sucks to hear about lulu. Hope she's healing up fast and doing well. Tell her it could be worse, Butch has 25 staples in his belly right now (not from a fight though). These guys need to get together and play.

Sounds good, would be fun. Come on, he's not THAT big. He was only 131 last week at the vet. Think he's done except for maybe filling out a little.

LOL... Didn't expect the coversation to go that way. I'll say that I wouldn't put the dog through the test to find out, but I'll respectfully disagree.

As for the rest I'd say... It's not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog. ;)

Today's pitbulls are a far cry of what the original "fight" dogs of the past were. The original pitbulls that fought in blood sports were only about 20 - 25 lbs.. They were bread with larger dogs and used for different purposes a little before, and during the turn of the century. Now they are more in te 50 - 60 lb range. During that time period they were used as working dogs quite a bit, to run along side wagon trains etc.. They protected kids around camp from mountain lions and bears and just about every other kind of predator you'd run across.

I'm absolutely biast towards them. Been around more then a few dogs, and it's my "biast" opinion that there's no better breed going.. Not even by a long shot. They are "fiercely loyal" in a way that I don't believe any other breed can be.

You are without a doubt a good dog owner. Train and treat your dogs the right way.

Truthfully I don't consider myself to be a grade "A" dog owner. If I did I'd spend alot more time training my dog(s), and wouldn't have to worry about dog park issues etc.. Instead I've gone to the extent of just segregating my dog as much as I can from potential problems. I know that the potential is in my dog. She's very trainable, very loving, and very intelligent.. I wish I had more time, and energy and desire to dedicate to that portion of my life.

Only time she randomly "attacked" a dog etc.. Was when she got away from my mom. In every other instance she wasn't the aggressor, or was reacting to a situation.. I.E. She deemed to be a threat to myself etc..

Do you think maybe that makes a more valid argument for people. Knowing that your dogs are well behaved and brought up, yet still are aggressive enough towards other dogs to start fights? Just asking? As stated in this thread, dogs don't have great reasoning skills, they are instinctive by nature.

I don't think it makes anymore of an argument for anyone? As I said on many occasions my dog is well behaved around PEOPLE.. She is dog aggressive for the most part and I'm aware of it, so I do my best to not put her in the situation if it can be helped.. Or at a minimum try to feel the situation out before jumping in with both feet. I do believe given the right set of circumstances though and the proper knowledge on my part, I could train it out of her. Something I regret not doing earlier.

The argument that you can find a lab someplace that is a little psycho may not be that valid. My dad is a dog trainer and has been for almost 40 years. Seen, and been around lots and lots of breeds at more events than I care to remember. Temperament issues aren't necessarily just stereotypical.

What's the website to your dads business? (PM it to me if ya like) Has he trained quite a few pits, amongst the other breeds? What would be his take on this I wonder?

All that being said, I don't have anymore time to defend my choice of breeds honor.. LOL My opinions have all been stated 100 times.

If you have kids and want a bitchen dog that will be gentle, and protective of them.. I doubt your going to find a better combo for a family dog then a well trained pit.

They have the patience of a hindu monk, and a high threshold for pain (kids yanking on their ears, misbehaving and generally being kids), and a sense of loyalty that simply can not be rivaled.

Before the media made them to be monsters.. They were America's favorite dogs. The little Rascals had a pit for crying out loud. Helen Keller had one as her helper (seeing eye dog/companion).

Not exactly the stories that make headlines, but hey nice guy stuff rarely does..

i didn't know we were disagreeing.. LOL

We Feuding Guru? ;)

By the way that go for the throat thing is a learned trait (taught by another dog) not a pitbull breed specific thing..
Neva passed her "talents" (for lack of a better word) onto my brothers little lab mix dog.. You should see them wrestle.. Weird watching a 30 lb dog drag her around the shop floor by her throat, and shaking it as hard as it can. LOL
