Just hear this on our local news. Not good and will be sending prayers for everyone in the area.

SHIT IS GETTING REAL! They told Oroville to evacuate in the next 60 minutes. They are expecting an emergency spillway failure. This is not good.

The emergency spill way is in danger of collapsing.

They increased the flows out of the auxiliary spillway to 100,000 cfs

So what the hell does that mean? Is the aux spillway the emergency spillway? Main spillway has controlled flow, emergency does not as I have followed this deal. These fucks at the DWR seem to have big issues with communicating.

If it is the emergency portion, the dam could be in jeopardy? That could mean disaster......

The emergency spillway is 90 ft tall. if it fails the lake will go down 90 ft. in short order.
Please....if you have folks in Oroville or along the Feather towards Yuba City, get them moving. Now.

The auxiliary spill way is the one that is controlled via gates. The emergency spillway is the overflow spillway once the lake level reaches 100%+ capacity

Negative. Emergency spillway and "auxiliary" spillway are one and the same. Word games from DWP

I've been following this intently, as I also live between dams , albeit a thousand or so miles to the north. This could be history in the making, although I sincerely hope not.
I'm not sure what the river below is able to handle , but my guess is that would be a concern at this point.

Totally separate question , why or how is the power plant affected? it's outflow should be well above the damaged area.

With an emergency spillway expected to fail "within the next hour," officials on Sunday afternoon ordered the evacuation of areas near the damaged Oroville Dam in Northern California's Butte County.

The order was announced at 4:42 p.m. on the Department of Water Resources' twitter account.

"Use of the auxiliary spillway has (led) to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure," a subsequent tweet said.

DEVELOPING: More details will be added to this report as they become available.

More information.
All the roads southbound out of Oroville are starting to turn into parking lots.. If they know alternative routes they might consider using them.

The power plant is effectively shut off due to debris in its main exit path causing blockages and raising the level in the turbine area too high to safely operate.

T the people that work at the Yuba City Lumberack Restaurant have been told to close up and bail. Take that for what it is worth...if they were my kin I'd have them heading elsewhere...

ALERT-ALERT-ALERT -- Yes, an evacuation has been ordered. All Yuba County on the valley floor. The auxiliary spillway is close to failing. Please travel safely. Contact family and friends. Help the elderly.
Take only routes to the east, south, or west. DO NOT TRAVEL NORTH TOWARD OROVILLE!!!!!

The auxiliary spillway is the long concrete sluice that has the big hole in it.
The emergency spillway is the long wall that is creating the infinity pool.
It sounds to me like that is being undermined and will fail.
That will allow a large amount of water to flow uncontrolled.

OK. NO.

Lets get this straight. The spillway that is the concrete chute is the spillway, not emergency and not auxiliary.

The EMERGENCY SPILLWAY and AUXILIARY SPILLWAY are one and the same.

I've got to be honest, if that thing lets loose I'd be evacuating way past Sacramento. I was down at the river yesterday and it was he highest I have ever seen it. For those of you familiar with the Sac River, this is the balcony at Chevy's. Normally if you are on the water you'd be looking up probably at least 30-40' to the balcony. That's the parking garage below it.:eek

You are correct. Willie B is in SoCal right now.

I spoke with War Canoe a few minutes ago. He lives on High ground.

Am I the only one who thinks they should have had that fucking thing wide open, regardless of the damage to the spillway, for the last week?

This all seems avoidable...all the way back to 2013 when they are seen inspecting some obvious damage in the exact spot. :(

Prayers and positive thoughts to everyone affected by this, I hope you are all safe.

She is far enough north...she will be fine. There will be a bunch of extra people in town for a while, but she will be fine:thumbsup

KCRA chopper headed back to home base.

This is crazy. I hope people are able to get out in time.

Looks like part of problem is water spilling over (out) of dam from launch ramp parking lot, which is actually beyond (north) of emergency spillway.

Going to be some serious policy changes after this I predict.
