Rott mix. She was a rescue and the runt of the litter. I hate that rottys have such a bad rap.

Fortunately the bad rap is less today, it was a lot worse 15 years ago. In the late 90's Rottweiler's hit number two on the AKC most registered breeds. The non registered back yard breeders all over the place. The numbers made them worse then they are. Now they are number 9 and not as many non registered breeders around. 15 years ago 30 or so breeders in my area and Washington, now there is maybe 5 active. I like them being less popular.

That's the way it goes.
In the 70s it was Dobermans, the 80s the GSD,Rotties in the 90s,now the Pit is the "flavor of the decade"
Sad really.
Like yourself I'm glad the Rotts and Dobermans as well are less popular.

Yep, less popular means less incidences. Doberman was still popular here in the late 90's. You would see a couple in the shelters every time you went. Same with Rottweiler's. Now you hardly see them in the shelters here. Its a great thing.

Have had 2 rotties they are my favorite breed. My last one she rolled with me for 11yrs got a tumor on her heart and had to put her down... took a couple years and a couple kids for the thought of a dog around the house again it was a been there done that deal for me love my rottie there was no replacement so I looked to the next breed that had my heart "Mastiffs"...saved a half Dogue and bull mastiff mixed both parents akc papers to the moon and back on history. They were pups who went supposed to hook up the week they were to get fixed bang bang the bull was knocked up...me and my family's hearts have been Swept way by the big guys natural traits and his loyalty to my family:thumbsup... ow and don't mess with da kids he let's you know he don't like it...lol

Probably not many other Rhodesian Ridgeback owners here.

I've wanted a Rhodesian since I laid eyes on one.

Or, should I say, it laid eyes on me and jumped a 6-foot fence to charge after me. Something about a guy in a suit - dog knew I was trouble.

Luckily the owner intervened and educated me about the breed. Fantastic dogs :thumbsup

So what are your favorite breeds and if you switched what would it be?

Besides Rottweiler's, I like Dobermans, but I've also considered German Shepard's and Belgian Malinois. Late 90's I was into the protection dog sport schutzhund: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schutzhund Takes too much time to compete and Id rather be boating. But still tend to like breeds known to compete in that sport.

If I had the resources, time, and appropriate living situation, I would love to have, one at a time or all at once :), a newfoundland, German shepherd, and a lab. Hell, a few other breeds too, I just really like our four legged friends.

Depends.
If you're talking a typical family pet, there's many to choose from.
If you're talking IPO/Shutz the list is pretty short.Takes a lot of dedication and most breeds don't have the drive it takes.Even in breeds known to excel at the sport some have it some don't.

Pets most will do. I still do some obedience and other German Style shows with my dog. Looking above pet. Hence in Rottweiler's I have about 3 breeders that can consistently deliver good dogs.

On the next one I'm leaning shelter dog. But considering buying an adult with obedience and show background all ready. Several thousand dollars to go that route though. Breeder I'm talking with does personnel protection dogs and is trying to talk me into a German Shepard he has.

Another nice Rottie.

Called a breeder of Rottweiler's in Washington State. He also does trained protection dogs for sale. Since he doesn't have a Rottweiler in the blood lines I want. He is trying to talk me into an 18month old obedience trained German Shepard female. Thinking about it.

You wont regret it. My dad has done 2. His first one was a fully trained police dog that no dept wanted because he would release his bites prior to command. He ended up being the most incredible dog I have ever been around he was put down almost a year ago with spleen cancer. he got another one about 6 months ago from the same breeder that came from the Czech republic. He has obedience training and a lot of bite work. he is another great dog. This is his new one at about 17 months old. He weighs 88 lbs and will probably end up about 95 which is where his last one was.

Choc lab who is a great dog. And a bad idea Germ Shep by my son. Fucking pain in the ass. Not a fan of that breed. Maybe its just this dog. But he's a lil fucker.

Shepherds are working dogs...they need a bit or exercise and need mental stimulation or some kind of job...if not they will get into everything and are extremely mischievous. I would suggest running him and working on obedience with him...you don't need a trainer to do this...they are very eager to learn and be given direction.

Another one here for Boxers. If I did any other breed it would be a Shepherd, I grew up with them and they are great around kids, great for protection and when trained they are great but for me I love the boxers and their activity level and both of mine love the water and the river...the male a little more than the female but they both like it. The male (brindle) I got when he was 8 weeks old and the female is a rescue.

Yea...I know this. I just wished my son had researched and figured this out before he got the pup. They have had him in training already. But the typical kid who says he's gonna take care of it and ALL responsibilities comes up short as expected. He needs to be taken out for exercise more, cleaned up after better, the list goes on. On top of it, it's a breed that needs it more than others. I'm too chill for a dog like this. Too much of an attention whore. That's why I don't dig it. LOL... My poor wife ends up picking up the slack which makes me more mad. :grumble:

My next dog will be a Rhodesian. How does he do in the heat and water?

He's primarily an inside dog but the breed was built for the heat. Hasn't been to Havasu yet but does enjoy a dip in our pool on occasion.

Curiosity was killing us so, we paid for the doggie DNA test for Mr Wilson. Turns out, he is 75% American Staffordshire Terrior and 25% Bull Mastiff/Rhodesian Ridgeback/White Shephard/Boxer..... 20140730_194821.jpg 20141018_201733.jpg 20141030_181534.jpg

English Bulldog - perfect boating dog, tie a rope around it and she doubles as an anchor. 70 pounds that can't swim for a shit and sinks like a brick.
