I bought my dad a Sub for his 60th birthday 4 years ago…. It’s now doubled in value and I kick myself in the ass for not buying 2, lol! I really want the explorer 2 with the white face, almost bought one last weekend but I decided to wait it out.

I dunno.. I don’t know what models are cool or aren’t but I do follow Moses the jeweler and he’s got legit Rolex’s all the time between 4-11k?

I'd take a fake Rolex over these.....

Yeah, I’ve bitten my tongue for a long time on these because I know many many board members have them. Taste is one thing, and and them being quartz is another, but having an acrylic lens instead of sapphire at that price is beyond me. It’s under a hundred bucks difference between the two, and these go for thousands somehow.

A Submariner would fit in with your lifestyle. It's their classic dive watch that you can wear everyday, whether you're wearing flip flops or going to a wedding or going out to a nice dinner the Sub fits in everywhere. They are not too heavy, big or clunky.

So for the guru watch guys , how much should a sub mariner cost right now? I considered one but I’m kinda like ehh. I would need to buy two of them to pass on to my sons . And is it wise to buy now or is it just buy it when you feel like buying one or two.

The Submariner starts at $9100 MSRP from an authorized dealer. But you most likely won't be able to find one from an AD. So you will have to buy Grey market. A new Sub no-date would be about 13k new with all the documentation.

I am just a cheap ass Dutchman! No way would I pay the money for a real Rolex! Could I afford it, yes, but hell no! I could afford a new truck but I drive a 2005 and still love it! That being said, I would totally rock a fake watch! Not for anybody to see or be impressed with. I would do it for the novelty of it and I actually like cool looking watches. I have a tag that I was given which is nice but I have several other lesser name and lesser cost watches tht I like to wear because I like them. With fakes I could have several different ones to match the day or event.
Another example is fishing reels. I have an offshore fishing boat that is fully equipped. I could have got the latest and greatest reels and rods but I opted for building my own rods and buying solid used Avet 50s. That is just how I am wired.

It seems that buying one now you will not lose value but stay the same for the most part. Unless you purchase a unique one that can shoot up in value later.

Damn, this can be an expensive thread, similar to the eclectic bike thread. Might have to go looking as I really liked the one I was tempted to buy a couple of yrs ago.

I would recommend getting "Homage" watches then, if you want the style, and the look, and probably actually better quality time piece, look at San Martin, Steinhart, etc, they make copies of the famous watch designs but aren't lying to anyone about what they are or trying to trick anyone.
Also, a good number of fakes come from groups within the world I don't want to end up supporting. Sure, some are just chinese knock offs, but lots of super clones and equivalents can be tied back to say North Korea, terrorist organizations, etc.

Yep, the money makes sense all day, enjoy something and not lose money, however, since it makes such logical sense, most are returned to the problem of "how in the hell can I get one new if they won't sell it to me?" I would say if you pay over MSRP on a Submariner, GMT Master II, or Explorer II, even those are pretty safe and won't go down in value over the long run. You are still in a good spot at inflated used prices.

Daytonas, some precious metal pieces, are a lot more risky.

Build a 300k TT Schiada that will be worth 200k in 5 years? Yep!

Buy a 20k watch that will be worth 20-25k+ in 5 years? Get out of here!!

When the thread slows down, should we start talking about the value over MSRP for Pateks and AP's are really start the "get rich quick" ideas going? 🤪

Thank you for your insight. I would assume most everyone gets somewhat reemed on their first buy, then you really get into it and understand the product more.

Think he wife would prefer my bourbon buying collection if I start collecting watches. I told her that all my bourbon will make me money if I sell it., so I keep buying.

My SIL is Chinese born and raised there. She goes to China several times per year for her business. She is a Chinese medicine store owner. She brings them back for her friend who sells them. These are the good ones and they sell for $280 to $500 bucks. They are pretty good but not as good as the real thing.
pretty good and fake should never go together.....

For some, absolutely. Again, I have had maybe 2 people ever comment on a watch I wear in the real world, no one cares. Its honestly so amazing how little anyone notices a wristwatch besides thieves in big cities. Again, it comes down to what you are into, a bayliner can get you and family to Foxes or the channel just as easy as a DCB, even easier actually. Great memories either way.

My love of watches is based on a few things, I fail to explain well, but its the convergence of art, engineering, history, and fashion. I spend all day in a digital world, I work in tech, so I love seeing something that showcases fine skills of a craftsman, performed by hand, over a lifetime. I love the stories of why they were developed, how they changed history, the skill to accomplish a certain level of polishing or engraving. Its a hobby, it doesn't make sense in a practical or emotionless world, just like a DCB. If it is your particular jam, go for it. Below is an A. Lange & Sohne movement to show off what I am talking about. I think all the machinists or people with skilled hands in any craft can appreciate.

I've been wearing high end watches for close to 20 years. Have probably only had a handful of people over that time say anything about them. And was always when I was wearing a Rolex. My Lange has never drawn any attention. Neither have the Patek's , or Brequets etc.

Chevelle, post a picture of a Datograph case back and that will blow their mind.

...and if anyone is interested in an example of history, here is the story on what I am picking up in the next couple of months, the Omega Speedmaster Professional, more commonly known as the Moonwatch. Space race accomplishments start at the 9:00 mark.

Same, definitely tracking how that one does on secondary market. I like both the extremes, I want the original, the 321, but if you aren’t getting original, get the superior movement, the 3861, 1861 and 1863 don’t have the original factor, and the new one is finally co-axial escapement and hacking seconds. It so cool they brought back the 321.
