I did find a vehicle over the weekend that I am trying to get more details on. I have left a message for the owner to call me.

I am looking at it as more of a replacement of my golf cart. I’d still need a Show Car.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I can easily get a Florida license plate for the vehicle below. It was imported as a Low Speed Vehicle. However, it goes 60mph. Comes with 5 speed transmission, which should keep it from being stolen. lol

I am really enjoying this thread…….. Thank You!

Here is just some random stuff that will help steer me in the right direction.

First……. I currently live in a condo. This might change, but as of right now, it is difficult to do anything other than minor repairs. I only own a tool box…… not a shop.

I cannot purchase anything higher than 7’. It won’t fit in my parking garage. No lifted vehicles.

My budget is only limited by my desire, but I am looking for a fun car, not a appreciating investment.

One of the reasons why I like Rat Rods is that they seem easy to clean. LOL I’d rather not spend all my time waxing my car.

You can also park a Rat Rod in questionable places. I am certainly not going to park my 200k appreciating collector car anywhere questionable.

I want something unique. We have an abundance of rich car enthusiasts that will always have a cleaner version of whatever collector car there is. Car collecting seems to be the number one hobby for well off retired people. I am not looking to compete with that crowd.

Id like whatever I buy to be able to take 4 people on a beach cities cruise. However, I don’t really care if the backseat guests are comfortable or not. LOL I am not opposed to having to throw a backseat into the car when I have guests.

I want the car bagged. No other reason than it’s a fun toy to play with.

Earlier in this thread I posted the pics of Jeep Rat Rods. I found them doing a quick image search. After thinking about it, I kinda like the pic of the very first Jeep. It has the headroom, but is still a Rat Rod. It seats 2 comfortably, but could easily get a removable rear seat. It can be open air. It can have just a Bimini top. Or it could also have a hard or soft top. With 2 people and a tonneau cover, it will hold supplies out of site. (Ice chest, chairs, bags, tools) I am not sold on the Jeep, but I would like to find something with similar features.

I am not looking to drag race the car. However, rear wheel drive is a must, so I can take it drifting!

The places that I hang out……. A Rat Rod is more accepted than a very expensive collector car. I hang at biker bars as an example. The Harley crowd doesn’t care for the Ferrari owner crowd if you know what I mean.

I cannot help but wonder how wide a Rat Rod Jeep is with the tires on the outside of the tub? Could be as wide as a Dually. Lol

Based on the above, what would you look at?
This one might be for sale, it’s currently at Pete and Jake’s shop in Missouri on display. Arguably one of the first rat rods built.
‘it was one of the feature cars in the big tent at the 70th In-N-Out/Hot Rod Magazine anniversary show at the Pomona Raceway

I had to read this a few times...

A Bronco or K5 would fit all of these requirements.

For a few of us "older types" here it's just so hard to think of a standard transmission as an anti theft device.

If I was looking for a beach cruiser for Florida, The Manx would be hard to beat. You can find fairly cool ready to drive nice Manx vehicles in California. The Thing or a convertible Karman Ghia as well.

But I would also consider a full convertible 2wd blazer. You could bag that, it can haul 5 people pretty easily and still have room in the back for a cooler. Air conditioning seems like it would be nice to have even with a convertible and you could pull a conservative sized boat.

After I went to the Oreion Reeper Facebook group, I learned of the many future headaches the Reeper would give me.

Other stuff

After looking at a few videos of the Manx, I don’t think I would like the sitting position. The front seats are literally on the floor of the Resorter.

Ive now gone down the vintage Jeep rabbit hole. I fell in love with the CJ-7 in this video. It’s beautiful, with a 350. It sounds wonderful! Lol I like the half doors. This thing checks a lot of boxes. However, it never gives a price.

I was looking for an example of the Blazer on bags. YT served up this beautiful example of a convertible Blazer. WOW!

… I had a couple of those… A 63 and 65… At some point in the 80’s and 90’s, those were a big export item… They were well sought after in Europe…

C-Ya.....buy something that YOU like. It's your $$$. No matter what you get, not everyone is going to think it's as cool as you do. If you're not into wrenching and don't know a good shop near you, don't buy anything too custom. The appeal of the hobby wears off fast if it's always breaking down.....unless it's a custom boat ;)

Here's my 67 Camaro that I bought when I was 17 and still have today, many many years later......but it's not for sale after all the blood, sweat and $$$ I have into it.

I've built about a dozen CJ7s in the last 35 years. I'm currently building a barn find 1986.5 CJ7 after not having one for 12 years.

Finding unmolested CJs that are not rusty or have been turned into Rock Crawlers is getting harder, but they are out there. Arizona and California again seem to have the best selection. The Jeeps are super easy to turn wrenches on if you need to fix something and I've been able to find almost anything I need save for some specialty items that I liked where the company no longer produces the part.

Wrangler Half doors on a CJ is a great look, you can add the Wrangler Soft top as well. Great choice for a beach cruiser, but harder to get into the back seat for adults if you care about that.

WOW, that's beautiful Not So Fast. I really bet you wish you could get it back for what you sold it for huh? My Camaro was Garnet Red with Black Stripes when I first got it. Now it's Mercedes Brilliant Silver. Red was certainly THE color backing late 60s/early 70s. I paid $2,500 in 1977 for mine 🤯

Cruising Florida? 32 Ford roadster or any street rod could be fun. Plenty out there that won't break the bank and easy to maintain.

If you want your wife to go to shows with you, she better have some input into what you get. My wife tired quickly of our convertible. Too loud, too windy, too fast. ( I didn't think so, but it sounded fast) LOL Messed up her hair, etc.

Funny you brought that up, I sold it back in late 70's and get this, sold it for $15,000. Whata a jerk huh, and the buyer sent his represenatives down from Frisco to buy it, it was his sons 16th birthday  I asked if he knew what this car was haha, and they drove it back to Frisco from El toro, called me about 15 minuts after leaving my house to ask what octane gas to use LOLOLOL.
Car is probably worth a hundred grand nowaday ☹️☹️☹️

A manx is awesome- But a Thing gets crazy attention. Also, it's an easy to maintain VW. I built one for my dad, the mostly stock one that I have no current pics of, and then I built a tube chassis car for my self. Sold the off road car only because it was a bit to fast for the kids at the time. The next build will be a K5-IFS 4wd. First pic is the restored Thing-that we still have. Wheels have been changed to period correct Fuchs. The next 2 were it's restoration. The following pics were the off road one (since sold).

I don't know anything about those jeeps, but they look cool.

I started down the road you are getting on about a year ago. Two cars in, one I do consider a rat rod, but more refined. New interior, small back with turbo 350 trans, 4 link rear end etc. But body is ok, little rough.

Then I got the vet, and love the looks ( Always wanted one) but it has some issues but runs and drives, I've put some time and money into it but nothing crazy, currently some electrical issues that have come up. Fans are not working on the radiator and now when I hit my brakes the front fog and side light turn on and my blinker aren't working. Like everything old, be ready to work on it as well as have a pro do the work that is out of your wheel house. Which is something I am learning as I go. LOL. I'd love to put in an LS motor but don't have the money right now. I will probably just have the motor rebuilt at some point along with the wiring changed out.

As for the car shows, I have been to a couple, they are fun but not something I want to do all the time. Just me, nothing against them. But remember to bring a chair and cooler. Pics below for reference.

Damn, sold it for $15,000? That was BIG $$ in the late 70s. I wonder how long it took that 16 y old to wrap a 427 side oiler around a telephone pole?
I wonder how many fuel stops they had to make to get it up to the Bay.

Good friend of mine had an immaculate 69 SS396 375 HP Chevelle with a Turbo 400 trans and 3.73's in 1979. He sold it to his little brother, who was prob 18 at the time and took him about 2 months to get liquored up on a Friday night and wrap it around a telephone pole in town. Fathom green metallic paint.
This isn't it, but just like it.

That's a great pic. Which motor/trans did you have in it? Did you have the pushbutton on the dash automatic?
Most of the "kids" on here have no idea what I'm talking about 😁

Did you have the old Monroe 90/10 front shocks? I had those and the Moroso trick front springs in my Camaro at one time and you good almost do a wheelie with street tires

Imo, the best show car for you is a rented one.
Think about it. I don’t care how much money you have, a part time hobby to indulge in when the mood strikes you does not warrant owning a car that you have no idea about, or even what type of car you might like.
Rent that bitch.

It was a 426 with the cross ram induction system, Tuned bt Earl Wade, Art Carr Tranny, push button on the dash but they switched the push buttons for some unknown reason so first was third and it cost us the Winter nationals ECT because I was excited and pushed the wrong button, other wise we win it all God willing. Earl should have been driving as he was hard to beat but he got to drive Gas Rondas Stang for some reason, oh well history now

Thanks Bobby, Love the SS454. Is that like The Dale Earnhardt Edition? What year is it?

The Camaro still gets driven once or twice a month on my off lake weekends. 3" stainless exhaust gives it a nice rumble. I'll try to post up a vid
The guy that did the interior nailed it. I told him I wanted a mix of stock and new school. Mark Lopez did the work. He does a lot of 40s and 50s rods and customs.
He traded someone for a 68 Camaro while he was doing mine and he told me "at least I know what I'm doing with the interior" 😁

He's a pic of the 2 car side of my garage. Old School on the right, new school on the left

When I was at JMS Racing, we helped a guy restore these things to better than new condition.

He was selling them overseas for around 125k back then.

I can try and track him down for you if you'd like. He moved to Vegas many years ago now.

I was looking for an example of the Blazer on bags. YT served up this beautiful example of a convertible Blazer. WOW!

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier for you. 👍🏼

I'd prefer a same year Bronco though.

😎

You can get into the hot rod culture for fairly cheap. One of my neighbors had a car similar to this one, but it was a fiberglass hard top kit car. It looked cool, was not flawless as he actually drove it around and had fun with it. Even though it was a Ford body, the engine was a fuel injected Chevy and the trans was Chevy too. Rear axle was solid, so not fancy independent rear end. He told me he bought it used for $18K, ten or so years ago. He sold it last year for the low $20’s.

He said he probably could have sold it for more as it was in great running condition, but it was not show worthy, it was a real driver cruiser fun car. He said during covid he stopped using it as there was no place to take it, and after that he just sort of lost interest. He said the guy who bought it was like him when he first got it. New to the hot rod thing and super excited about it.

I that would be cool but don't put much effort into it, They are still bringing good money on www.bringatrailer.com, I actually intend on doing a Mecum auction just for the experience of doing it. no way can I loose on this one. @C-Ya check out this bring a trailer link on your search. it's top notch stuff with great research and sales tracking features

Nice. I'm in Mission Pendejo, I mean Viejo. But have had places in LHC for last 30 years. Built a house with RV in Havi in 2001, just before the boom started.
Wanna get out of Taxifornia myself for all the obvious reasons, but not ready for AZ full-time yet. Getting close though. Closer with Gov Newscum's bullshit:oops:
Thanks for the kind words on the Camaro.

It was one of those projects that was fun once it started to go back together, but I had to change shops during paint and again during assembly for various reasons. It took 4 years from start to finish. Well worth it at the end. When I went to pick it up from the interior shop I almost shit myself when I saw how nice it was. Interior guy thought I wasn't happy cuz I didn't say anything for like 5 minutes as I just took in everything he had done. Truth is, I was over the moon speechless. The pics don't even do it justice. Rarely does that happen on these kind of projects huh? ;)😁

I'm Tom, great to meet you

For a few of us "older types" here it's just so hard to think of a standard transmission as an anti theft device.
🤣
When my son was 16 we signed up for a defensive driving course of sorts,
The instructor asked out of 30 kids who could drive a stick
My son and one other girl in the class
This is what he was driving at the time
