Great question. Have no idea. Unless you spent some quality time in another country it would be hard to answer. For me, maybe Canada but I think it would get too cold. Maybe someplace tropical like the Virgin Islands or the Bahamas. I guess I need to vacation more to find out.

Afghanistan, buy a bunch of land and fire up a nice boutique poppy farm, and have a small army, nothing too crazy just some standard warlord type stuff. I’ve heard they are tough on crime and very conservative😂

Santorini Greece, although stuck on one island may be tough. Easy to jump on a boat to go to other islands. You couldn't pay me to live in Athens though.

BVI

Madrid, Italy. Have a sister that lives there and she tells me great things about it.

I’ve heard good things about the previously mentioned Italy,Spain and Portugal. I’d also consider Mexico or Costa Rico..somewhere that Pats/Americas are accepted. Probably end up being some sort of “Gypsy Life style” here in the states though..definitely base out of a state that doesn’t tax my pension.

I have some family in Dubai. The lifestyle they have seems to be extremely nice. They said it’s super clean, and the crime rate is low.
But.. they also are rich so I’m not sure how the middle class lives. But, I am terrified of living in the Middle East despite my family saying “it’s safe.” We seem to have different meanings on what is safe.

Grand caymen or the Virgin Islands. Those are two ports I could have just stayed on the island and missed the ship. Even met a women renting floats on the beach and said she just never got back on the ship. Our group charted a boat for the day and the captains have always moved from the US and say they love the pace of life. One guy even said living in the US made you miss your life. He just wanted a slower pace.

One thing that I hated about a lot of countries I have been to is the amount of loose dogs. I am just a huge dog lover and it breaks my heart. Beach, water and no loose dogs are my priorities.

St John was pretty nice too.

Ciao Ragazzi, grazie per pensare di mio!

Yes, I would absolutely suggest the region of Molise or Abruzzo! (My place is in Molise) If you have ANY questions, please feel free to message me here.

As always, take a look at the website I put together for our village. https://www.castelbottaccio.com/

Our house in the 946 year old village was $27k out the door. Wine is $9 for 5 liters, your neighbors will bring you olive oil from their harvest, food is grown within 20 miles and you can get 3 bags of veg for like $10, pesticides are mostly banned in the country, water is not treated with chemicals, Amalfi Coast is 2 hrs, Rome is 3hr, (from my village) Beach is 45mins and a train will take you anywhere you want to go. Oh yeah, flights to other countries are like $20. We're trying to figure out residency before retirement because we've had just about enough of this shit show. Currently we're there part time. You will be treated like family. These are the nicest people I've ever met in my life. Simple, beautiful souls.

Since I last posted about the house, I went back and did some works on the kitchen by removing the plaster and exposing the stone.

I'm too old to move, but I have a cousin in Maui and she's always traveling to Bali for vacations and medical and dental procedures. She's a travel agent and has bought land there, claims it's safe and ultra inexpensive, and plans to retire there. She says it reminds her of the Hawaii she fell in love with 45 years ago.

Maybe Ireland or Scotland. More of a lateral move. I would want to be somewhere that my money goes farther. Maybe I will identify as a wealthy nomad sheep farmer on Skyfall.

While seated in a dentist's chair I've watched shows about buying homes in various areas such as yours, I see the alure. Certainly an inviting and friendly atmosphere.
Viewing the local town's architecture, the beautiful arched brick ceiling and the stones you've exposed in the cozy kitchen I'm filled with the thoughts of ----- EARTHQUAKE, like the nasty one that area experienced in 2002.
I guess one could rest comfortable that after all these years most all the buildings and homes remain intact --- game of odds. 😁

I hear Portugal is the Idaho, Texas, Tennessee, Florida of Europe. Tons of people are moving there.
Portugal is very tax efficient if you are a retired European.

Americans have to pay US income tax anyway.

Being originally from England and spending my summer's there, if I had to move, I would make that my base. Money can go a bit farther if you are out in the country, housing is cheap, everything else is not.

My godparents live out in the country with a tiny international airport a quarter mile away, I mean really tiny, but does do international, so easy to hop all over Europe for 80 bucks. They have a place in Spain, where all British people go in the winter, and the Costa Blanca makes life really easy and cheap. That kind of set up for me has some appeal being single and newly in my 40's. I don't want to live permanently in England, I love it there, but even these days, and my company based out of there, I would only like to do 6 months there and 6 months here. Switch that to hot spots of Europe on resort lifestyle, that would be an option for me.

My grandparents, and my uncles lived in Saudi, and Kuwait before the shit hit the fan over there working on pipelines. A couple of my cousins were born in the Kingdom. They had positives and negatives of the experience but that's over 50 years ago at this point. Back then, maybe....now not a chance I would do it.

I like driving cars. In the 80s my dad was VP of sales of what is now Canaccord Genuity. He opened a London office for them in 1987. Spent several months back and fourth. We had a flat in London. So Id pick the UK as a base and drive all over Europe.

Currently they are in Gydnia Poland which is a coastal town and she love's it there. She said almost everyone speak's english and very nice.

Looks like a beautiful place. Your house looks great. What are the going prices for homes there today?
How far away is the airport?
Do the locals speak any English?

Mexico.
You can live on the cheap while collecting US benefits. If you live close enough to the border you can access US healthcare.
That appears to be the latest hustle from what I see just 30 miles south of border.

Athens was such a let down. The islands were rad. Spent a week on Naxos, and it was the most stress free week of my life! Don't think I could live there though....Santorini would be fun for a short period of time but way too touristy to live there IMO.

Tell me more about Athens. We’ll be there on a cruise this summer (one day). Any tips? Don’t do, must do.
It was just so dirty and had a weird vibe to it. Maybe I was unfairly comparing it to Rome, which we had just spent a few days in, but other than a nice dinner in a little alley with an old man serenading the street from behind a piano, we didn't really enjoy Athens. The Acropolis and the Parthenon were neat, but the city just didn't feel right? Thats what I recall.

My brother and his wife have been going around Europe searching for retirement as well. He's a doctor and she's a nurse so they do well. They went to northern Italy last year and they're going to southern Italy this year to check it out for possible retirement living. They are also going to Portugal where I hear it's really nice and much cheaper as well.
Just went to Portugal in December for a week. My wife's former co-worker retired there with his husband and rent a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath apartment in central Lisbon for about $2k a month. My wife has been back three times in the last year for about 5 weeks total. Super safe country. Roads are basically new because there are a lot of toll roads. Wine is dirt cheap. Food is great. Weather and beaches are very nice. Free healthcare for everyone but our friends also have Private Insurance. They still say the free healthcare is better than the private. No homeless or none that I saw. Parks are clean and safe to walk at midnight. Subway and train system is clean and outstanding. You can fly almost anywhere in Europe or Northern Africa from $100 or $200 and only an hour or two flight. Spain is super close to drive to. Definitely are a lot of ex-pats moving there.

Costa Rica. Mexico (Baja peninsula coastal city) or Italy... I've had the opportunity to travel worldwide for business and have found so many amazing places, but if I had to exit from the U.S., it would be one of these three. All for different reasons, but I could easily settle into the lifestyle of each of them. Weather, food, culture, and most importantly, the people.

Dis be what I'm talking about! I look forward to simplified elder years which hopefully results in a lower cost of living. I'm thinking George Clooney, a la, The Assassin.

In my opinion, it seems Italy has a more or less stable government not making plans to control every facet of life.

Good people. Good food. Good vino.

I had the amazing opportunity to live in Ireland for 6 months and would do it again in a heart beat but there is zero chance I would not keep my legal address and home base anywhere but the U.S.
I could do a bunch of 3-6 month trips but I will always come home.

Athens was a shit hole except the Acropolis and Parthenon. Graffiti all over the place. Went to leave the hotel to go to dinner and the front of our hotel had steel doors lowered over the glass front because of the protesting. Santorini on the south east side is less touristy. We really like Naxos as well. Rented a car and explored the island.

It is all the money they save by not buying pickup trucks and by not buying everything on credit and paying interest on the debt.

https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1263153/car-ownership-by-make-brand-in-portugal

In addition, a partner in a law firm in Lisbon makes about as much money as a UPS driver in LHC.
First sentence has my dad written all over it. Never bought anything including our home on credit.
Last sentence explains why they don't have cool trucks. 😁 ;)
