Went there for the first time around 1977, met a few of my high school buddies there.I said WOW!!!!!!!!
Bought a hydro around 83' and was working for a trucking company.
Used to get up real early and make high speed pass's around Lapaz campground.
I would get as close to the bank as possible and just keep it nailed.
Loved doing it Sat/Sun mornings, I did not drink and people would come out of their tents hung over and just Pissed off.

A few years later we were in my buddies Datona pickle fork jet,
down by the last condo's before you you get to the damm. Out of no where a water ballon hit us.
Then another and another, finaly we saw which condo it was comming from.
We teased them to hit us and moved in closer, once we were in striking range.
Up came the jetovator and about 800+ horse power big block drenched the place.
They were pissed as the slider was open and they took a shit load of water inside.....

try that nowwww, see what happens........

I realy miss the titty shots from girls who were shy......

Remember walking back to Moonridge from the waterslide by Buckskin Valley. Had a friend who had no shoes. Don't know how he made it back with his feet still intact.

Remember thinking that "HONCHO" was too damn big for the river,
I think it was an early Advantage Party deck with a great stereo and fine women, watching a Hot Shot in his outboard race in the lagoon at RiverIsalnd and destroy his lower end and biscuits and gravy for breakfast at the Plantation next to the Jolly Knight trailer Park. and taking the kids for a ride to Buckskin for ice cream. They still tell thier friends about that..

Dougie Peters traded in the 32' Hallett HONCHO (the original big boat white with reds and oranges)for an all red 40' Hallett (one of the Herbst's old boats).

Skiing behind cars in the canal out off of Poston road. When there were no boats on the river to mooch ski rides from , we "improvised":hmm I spent a couple weeks working for Jerry at Foxes in 1964 & 65 Beleive it or not there were weekdays there were NO BOATS on the river. A 20 footer was THE BIG BOAT of the day, and not many of them.

Good Stuff Denny! You need to come out during the winter months so we can all sit around the camp fire a tell our stories.

I remember the smell of my Dads new Day cruiser in 1977 and how cool I thought the Panther jet was. I remember camping on the beach at Crazy and leaving the trailers in the water at our camp site for the entire week. Best of all the water slides that use to be at Crazy Horse where the VIP section is now.

I could run out to the ocean in my new 1976 Spectra jet through log infested upper Fraser Arms River, not giving any care about them.;) Had a 24 cabin cruiser before with sterndrive, that I had to keep my eyes peeled constantly for submerged bobbing logs with flags on them. It's a lot better there nowadays with less mills along the river.
I live in beautiful Okanagan Valley now with two lakes to choose from with no floating debris anywhere.:)
Same river, my starboard drive succumbed to an undewater log at 30 mph in 2005.
Thanks to the marine machine ram that kept the drive from pulling out further. The right trim rod was slightly bent and needed a new ram, plus the hat.

I remember the musty smell of the river blasting into the open windows with the 100 degree night air on the drive in once you got close. Nothing like it.
I still roll in with the windows down for that reason

“the show” in front of Sundance every big weekend
Riding our stand-ups in a pack from Moonridge to Sundance and getting so plowed we could barely get back at 1am
Copper Canyon
Passing out on the Sundance taxi at 1am packed at about 2 times capacity
Standing on the dock at Sundance with the dock sunk up to your knees
And of course, the Sundance wet tee-shirt contest

My Buddy Tim bought the “Troublemaker” warlock after the original owner passed. He added bigger twins and we ran the hell out of that boat up and down Parker for years. Man those memories I will take to the grave

Good times for sure!

Every-time we go through the Channel and pass Crazy Horse Campground it reminds me of when we used to go out there in the early 90's for spring break. 1990 I think was one of the 1st times I went for Spring Break- I was 16 and drove out there with my buddies.

During spring break I remember tenting it in the area closest to the water.

I remember beer bongs were the thing back then and you had to be super careful not to get popped for under age drinking or you would get arrested and spend a few hours in jail until your buddies bailed you out.

Everclear was a big deal back then and if you got a bottle you were like god because we didnt have it in CA.

We went for the party, drinking and hopefully to pull a few chicks- we didnt have boats but I remember mooching rides from Crazy Horse out to Coper Canyon. We would get dropped off and chill on the rocks, walk across the island of boats, party it up and have a blast and somehow get a ride back to Crazy Horse. Different times now for sure, but those were great times and great trips in my life that I will never forget.

I remember cruising past Echo beach with a group of co workers. We see a husband and son at water line, wife is seated about ten feet behind them. Late summer afternoon, no one else on beach. We wave to the family, wife smiles, drops her bikini top to probably show off her new add ons (?). Not one of us on the boat changed our smiles or did anything to alert the hubby what his woman just did, lol.
One of many unique River moments

And Makita drills at the sand bar in the late 90’s, seemed like everyone needed power tools on boats back then? Ha ha

I grew up in the Troublemaker Warlock. That was my uncle Greg's boat, he passed in 1995.

Similar thoughts for me...just add “tent camping on the surface of the sun”

We were always on the stretch of river below parker...

The smell of AV gas and castor oil exhaust from the standups, a root beer float from the A&W in Parker, fried chicken from the shell station in Parker (it was the best).

My dad worked with a buddy Don who was always a bit on the "creative" side...he was an engineer and had been around all kinds of boats his whole life. He picked up an old shitty glastron challenger with a 120hp chrysler outboard on it, and 1975 chevy CC dually along with a 5th wheel. He'd tow the whole rig out in early '90s. The truck was kind of a pile, and the AC didn't work too well...so I always opted to ride with Don listening to his stories in the dually while his wife and kid rode with my folks in the air conditioning. I remember pouring water on the trans tunnel when the carpet started smoking coming up the grade out of indio cuz the trans was about on fire pulling the boat and 5th wheel up the hill...I remember him bitching about the 4 times he had to insert his credit card in the pump because to fill up all 3 tanks took about 90 gallons and the pump would shut off at $50.

Back then, I don't remember anyone hanging out at the sandbars...everyone would ski/tube/skurf all day long.

Me and my buddies only had jet skis back then.

We felt like freshmen in high school riding bikes when all the cool kids had cars (boats).

I do remember the first time I got flashed at crazy horse.
I thought I was special LMAO

I don't miss the Lake Mohave DUI inspections - we went through some pretty aggressive and inhospitable mandatory inspections back in the day. They made my buddy recite the alphabet backwards and English wasn't his first language (it's Spanish). He was pissed and they didn't give a shit.

None of us had been drinking but they swept everyone up, made us go to the docks and do testing while looking up at them and into the sun on a very hot summer day

Never, EVER do stupid human tricks. Invoke 5th Amendment and shut the fuck up. Only thing required by law if suspected of OUI/DUI is to blow in the machine or get a blood sample.
Must be drinkin, can't even type right.......

Blood or breath is no longer required either. A search warrant must be obtained, but it’s not hard to get.

I’ve been trying for 5 minutes now...I can get about 4 letters in. Fuck that.

“What’s the criminal code that mandates one must be be able to recite the alphabet backwards officer?...write that on my fucking ticket...we’ll see what the jury thinks”

I have been going to the parker strip for over 40 years and you don't have enough time to hear all of my memories. Alot of stuff alot of youngsters could not even fathom. I have seen that area go down since all the inconciderate boaters out there now, which is why I only go out during the week.

Not one mention of Hell CA. The road to Parker used to pass thru there. The lady at Magoo's knew about it and had the photos to prove it. Also didn't see a mention of the Foam Dances at Sundance. What about We Have Water Dogs bait signs all over the place? Ski waist belts for a PFD. Desert water bags on the front of your Dad's vehicle.

Exactly!!!

The more stupid testing you do the more they can build a case against you.

That is the oldest trick by L.E.O.'s. Your;e response to that will fry your'e ass in a heart-beat. Example "i cant even do that sober" Admission of drinking! Best bet is to just look at the officer and laugh. My response is to look away and say the alphabet then turn around with a smile. M

Wow, just saw this- starting about 1976 (16 ) so many great memories. Up early to ski or bare foot on the strip in my buddies parents skv. Badnochs for breakfast then fox’s, Sundance or whatever bar would serve us. Then crazy horse, tiki terrace, roadrunner, and the many, many hotels??? Crazy fun when you could afford some buckets. The lake smell early in the morning as the sun comes up. Fast forward 100 years and it’s still great but these youngsters have no clue how great & easy life was- still great but not as easy. Wow, time goes by fast but what a life!!

Much clearer water and almost deserted on weekdays, which made for lots of tops optional boating.

First trips as a teen with parents I remember riding in the back of a capped pick up with a carpeted bed - horror of horror these days.

We stayed at the local hotel and motels and friends, till we built the house in the keys.

There is a "smell" and increase in humidity & coolness the river area has shortly after you cross the 95 & riverside and head toward the keys - this would always put me instantly awake after a long drive from Torrance/Hermosa and Id be ready to march into the weekend partying hard - you notice this kind of thing driving a 70 Chevelle 4 speed without AC to the river in the summer.

Now everyone is in a sealed up AC'd cocoon including me.....

Surrounding one's self with successful smart fun people had a scintillating effect on my outlook on life.
" The River " helped shape my view on what a successful life could be.

Thanks to numerous incredible experiences hanging out here or there my view on my potential was limitless in those days and I soon had my own house in the keys with a garage full of bitchin toys by my late 20's mid 30-42 work demanded everything from me, and continued to enjoy the location but didn't make it out much because of work so I sold my place.

I make several trips a year these days and always have a great time.

It's a special place with some very special people.

Good times!

Telephone cove, catching bats in the mines, fire dancing, the bagpipe player that poured gas around his skiff in the cove at night lit it and played, pouring 10 gallons of gas down the cliffs behind camp and tossing a flare into it, lots of other shit that the statute of limitations may not have run out on.:rolleyes:

My parents had a trawler when I was a kid. We kept it in Richmond on the Fraser River. Our route to the ocean took us past a notorious nude beach here, called Wreck Beach. As we past I always had the binoculars out looking for hot chicks. Never saw any!

You didn't have a strong binocular.:pThe water is pretty shallow at WB, especially for a trawler with deep draft to get closer. There is plenty of hot chicks on weekends though.

this is as close you can get to wreck beach with larger than a jetboat

Ya know, I am gonna just toss this out and hope I am not stepping on any toes.
TPC, you, RD, and some of the other Colorado River Lifers oughta get together and collaborate on a book about life at the river in the Golden Age of Havasu and Parker; before the big boats, big developments, big time changes came along. i know you guys could come up with enough pictures to make one hell of a coffee table book. You know, give the reader a feel of the scene, "Back in the Day". Back when people went there to be there and enjoy the river scene, not to be seen and stroke their own egos, which, from what I read on the net, is the primary activity for many people these days.
There is a whole generation of people growing up and recreating down there who have no clue what the history of the area is. Perhaps they could learn from it, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to document the past before the pictures and people who have the memories and the pictures ain't around no more.

If ya'll jump on this, I want 5% of the net, and a signed copy..:D
I tell the "kid's" these day's, IF I could go back an change one thing, Id'a taken a LOT more pictures....A LOT MORE ! an take them with something other than the old "kodak instamatic" ...........
