I am not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but I would highly recomend using something other than carpet. I had planned to put snap in carpet over the vinyl on my sun tracker but I quickly fell in love with the vinyl. No more wet carpet to deal with, if someone spills something you just hose it off or dunk the bow under a wave, it isn't as hot as I expected it to be either.

I thought about it, but too many drawbacks.

I'm not laughing, feeling sore, tired and sweating just looking at what's in the future for you....

oMG dude. I'm in so sore today today! And of course it had to be the only sunny day this week as well!!!

🤣

Everything hurts from crawling under that POS and getting all the nuts undone.

Towards the end, I got a Bit of a system down, but I still had to go under for a few.

Not to mention lifting all that 3/4 inch plywood around.

I've Definitely had better days. 😩

So remember this pic?

20240327_120823.jpg

Some drunk fuckers must have assembled this thing Friday after lunch. I needed to make Sure everything lined up this time!

And another interesting thing...

This marine plywood I bought was 1/16th of an inch bigger in every direction. Doesn't sound like much but it does add up quickly, so I started in the middle and worked outwards from there. The ends have to be cut anyway, yes?

Every other cross rail had to be moved, so as to line up perfectly with each joint. Some just had to be loosened and pushed. One had to be unbolted and the holes redrilled. Slow going and a pain in the ass!!! But now everything is lining up correctly. So each board will be properly supported.

Slow going. But getting there...

Coming along nicely.

Details...

You can see how I had to adjust the rails to get the holes to line up approximately...

20240408_142456.jpg

I notched the bolted down board to the existing holes, then used my super high dollar jig to drill the new holes...

20240408_123305.jpg
20240408_123351.jpg

Once that was done, I again used my super high dollar jig to counter sink the holes a bit with a Forstner drill bit.

Better than new.

Fuck I'm tired today. Gonna take the day off and do some running around. This project is kicking my azz.

You gonna put the spacers between the carpet and the rails to allow water to move and drain?

I'm trying to picture what you're thinking here, but I just quite can't figure it out?

In any case...

The carpet Edges will be sandwiched between the plywood and rails. The rails actually have a C channel built into them for this purpose.

My fear is the carpet is gonna be too thick for this to happen, but Louie says not to worry, he's done this before. Big mallet to the rescue. 😜

I tried to find a pic online, but I don't see any other rails like the ones I have. Next time I'm down there, I'll post up side view pic of the rails.

They are 3/8" plastic spacers placed under the rails at each bolt down location to elevate the rail and keep dirt and water from being trapped. I'm on the phone so I can't copy and paste an example but you can see them at pontoonstuff.com. Search for "pontoon fence riser kit".

Oh i gotcha....

Those are for the fence, not the side rails. Never even thought about anything like that? Except for a few feet, Most all of my fencing has seats against it, so I don't really think those would provide any benefit in my configuration. Thanks though!

95 percent done with the deck...

Need drill a few more holes after I finalize the helm placement and get the fencing permanently mounted and a couple more elevator bolts installed.

My daughter's boyfriend helped me cut the final piece around the engine and get a whole bunch of bolts installed today.

I'll probably move the whole mess back about five inches or so, cause right now, there is more deck out back than in front. I'm thinking that might look weird?

I'll figure it out tomorrow...

Before moving helm back think about the extra weight with the larger gas tank, and who knows you may an upgrade to the motor a deal slaps you in the face and new motor is 100 lbs heavier.

Really look great.

Definitely not going to repower. I may mill the heads .030 down the road a bit, but that will be next winters project.

You're right. The new four strokes are Way heavier and I don't want to add all That weight.

Did some homework last night, and I should be able to get a 40 gallon tank in its new home. That will be more than enough for my needs.

The helm will actually be about 4 feet forward of its previous position. Gonna order a new throttle cable today. That length may ultimately decide the Exact final position of the helm.

I'm going center everything (left to right) directly over the center toon, and (obviously) move it all forward a bit.

It should be a much more balanced boat in the end.

Not that I'm any kind of expert but the 4 ft forward placement should be a nice spot.

I'm thinking about replacing the fence paneling...

What the general consensus. Dark brown? Or dark blue? 🤔

Thank you, that is a Great idea!!! 👍🏼

Ordered this puppy today. Should be here sometime next week. I have to order the hoses separately, but they are only a day away.

I spent probably half the day at Johnson Marine today, talking to the guys there and looking at how the new toons are all layed out.

They are a dealer for Avalon, and they know their shit over there. 👍🏼

Couple of updates...

Deck is done. Next step is drilling holes and then laying down the carpet.

20240502_151304.jpg

The plastic seat bases are pretty warped, and I don't want them completely collapsing. 1/4 inch angle aluminum on the inside and 1/4 flat on the outside should do the trick.

Hydraulic steering showed up this week. I installed the pump into the helm today. Need to install the steering cylinder and order the hoses next.

Yeah. He went to Elsinore yesterday. Not sure if he came back or not yet. Big family thing out there.

I'll be at the shop most of the day today.

Edit: His motorhome is parked out front of his house. I guess he's back! 😜

So I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how I'm gonna finish the back of the boat, now that I've decided to move everything forward.

So Many different ideas, each of em more crazy (expensive) than the next.

So today I just sat there staring at the thing, and figured out what I'm gonna do...

Gonna cut the existing fence on the port side, carry it straight over to what already exists, and have A1 build me a whole new rear facing seat, that I will put the new (much bigger) fuel tank underneath.

Oil tank will Maybe go in the engine well, down low, and then we can put a removable carpeted cover over it.

Took forever just to figure This out, taking the batteries, fuel and oil tanks into consideration.

I'm happy to have Finally put this issue to rest.

Unless you guys think of something I missed??

If the seat is outside of the fence no one can sit there while the boat is in operation.

I'm pretty sure you are correct. 👍🏼

It would just be a place to hang out, when you need to jump in the water and cool off. There will be a ladder permanently attached there as well.

We almost always anchor the boat with the stern to the beach, so it will make it Much easier to throw towels and ice chests up there when anchored.

With the fence at the very back edge of the boat, it was a major pain to get loaded when anchored. It should be a lot more functional this way. 🤞

P. S. I'll be able to hide the fuel tank underneath that new seat as well. 😎

Looks like a nice plan. Will your existing canopy cover the new rear seating area?
You may have mentioned earlier but how large of a fuel tank are you adding? Other than weight almost can't be too big.
A little moveable footrest in front of the rear seat would be nice.

Having had a toon years ago the only thing I have to add is that the majority of the weight should be towards the stern to prevent nose diving in rough water. I had a foot or two of water over the nose a couple times because people gathered towards the bow.

Good advice.

I try only boat mid week, spring and fall, so I seldom see water like that.

My buddy and I were joking around last night. He bought battery operated electric recliners for the river house, and we thought...

Maybe we could just put one of those back there! Wouldn't that be sweet? 🤣

And no, it won't. Might have to reposition it a bit? I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it for sure.

Fuel tank will depend on how the final seating area works out. I'll want to use that Whole area for fuel. Hopefully it will be well over 40gal. 🤞

Another $20,000 in parts and you'll have a sweet ass $15,000 toon. :p

I am following along, as I have thought about doing the same thing. Would you mind sharing costs with us?

So far...

1600 for plywood - true marine grade

1200 for carpet - 40kz

Hyd steering will probably be 2k all in?

200 -New throttle/shift cables

Not sure what the total on the upholstery and new cover will be yet.

Forgot what I spent on resin. 2/3 hundred? At Sherfab.

Maybe 500 at Paton and McFaddendale?

I've paid my helpers maybe 500 so far?

Louie at A1 said he would charge someone probably 30k for what I am doing. So I'll be Way ahead of the game when I'm done.

Still a lot left to do though. It will be awhile before I know the whole cost.

Cool, thanks for sharing. There's so many details that one misses when doing initial cost analysis on these projects. Bolts are not cheap. Especially stainless. I think these are fun projects if you have the time. But lots of guys back yards are littered with half done projects. LOL

I have spent almost every weekend at my daughter's new place for the past year remodeling, repairing, etc. It takes a long time to complete when you are only getting a couple days a week at it.

Wes (Froggy) called it the 90% done, 50% to go phase. The big stuff goes fast, but the damn details drag ya down! LOL Keep at it, and thanks for sharing.
