Looks like there’ll be some thumpers this weekend.
If the weather stays down I’ll be at the breakwater hoping it ignites the bass bite with all the surge. (DOH= Double Overhead)

Not that we can watch it, because Vans won’t stream it this year but PipeMasters should run today.
Larger swell arrives like noted above on the weekend in excess of 20-25 feet.
Sunset’s forecast 30-35’ 💪

Also watching the “call of the bay” for the Eddie. This swell might fall slightly shy of size over the timelines that they watch.

looks like tuesday will be the big deal:
"At a glance:
Today (Tuesday the 17th) we have mostly light to moderate NW ground swell in SoCal. A decent sized NW ground swell is due Wednesday the 18th, followed by a longer-period ground swell Thursday the 19th into Friday the 20th. A series of NW ground swells are due Sunday the 22nd with much bigger size. But then an even bigger NW ground swell is likely Tuesday the 24th with extremely high surf. Another NW ground swell is being watched for the weekend of the 28th. Condition-wise: moderate Santa Ana will yield to heavy onshore flow in a few days; rain chances tease the holiday forecast; the tide is still swinging wide; and water temps are on the cool side. "

Damn, and we were planning on taking the Duffy to Avalon on Tuesday.
I have to ask, do you really take a Duffy to avalon from HB? ive done it in a zodiac years ago. leave at 0400 and its like a grease slick out there, run that 25hp outboard wide open the whole way and repeat the next morning or late evening. but a duffy i see as a logistic problem with charging as well.

While our Duffy has the range (theoretically, after the lithium upgrade) we've never been quite drunk enough to head out and test our luck. We do run it over to Seal and Long Beach harbors for dinner and drinks as the weather and surface conditions allow.

I can remember when I was a kid there was a massive swell that busted over the end of the pier and broke off pylons

frog house is still there
That's what I hear, I haven't been in there since the early 70's.
Was in a Best Buy recently buying a new phone. Started shootin the shit with an oldly but a goody about my age about surfin, sport fishing, Orange County old days, and lo and behold, the gentleman was FranK Petrillo who's boards were sold out of the Frog House.

Read an article today the North Shore in Hawaii is flat out dangerous right now almost deadly to even look at it. It’s so big. Been there years ago it’ll pull you out to see in a New York second.

No, we hosted a party to watch it though. Seems to lose a bit more every year. Lost a couple of the long-term favorites only to be replaced by one with a full length pride flag of lights.

Awesome photo.

I drove the harbor Fri-Sunday with a full load of folks. I'm good for another year.
Its nice being slipped on the fairway so I don't have to chase the parade as we always did for Newport.

You have a nice front row seat. Sunday was about 1/2 the boats as Saturday night.

We did notice the Butterfly Boat, as my kids have been calling it since 2010, has a new smaller cruiser under the lights as I was expecting the old trawler.

Have an awesome Xmas and new years.

Sure was, to bad those picture perfect days during the annual Rose Parade were broadcast nationwide and all the miserable people realized there were living in the wrong place. 🥶 🤣
And yes, I'm forced to admit that being the trades I contributed to creating what it is today.
Not satisfied with F-ing up the OC, in the late 70's I headed south and helped F-Up San Diego too.🤭

I took these January 5th 2023 at noon . . . . the wind was whipping by that point, but the swell was still booming.

The 1st pic was taken from the sand at Seal Beach with the mouth of Huntington Harbor sort of closing out.

The second pic is of the oil platform Esther out in front of Huntington Harbor / Anaheim Bay . . . it's about 1.25 mille off Seal Beach.
(The story I 'heard' is the high spot there where the wave breaks is the remnants of when the originally built that oil rig . . . they supposedly were building it and a storm came and caused a bunch of damage, so rather than repairing what was there, they just cut it off down below and started a new one where it is now The remains left a high spot that breaks when the swell is big enough and the tide is low).

That was one of the "missing" boats I was alluding to, was wondering if the smaller version was the same owners as it had the same "feel". I think they used to dock over off Windspun in the Seabridge condo's.

This coming Saturday and Sunday nights we'll be taking folk out for harbour cruises to look at the lights, drink some wine (all but the operator ;)).

Have a great Christmas and New Year's yourself!

Monday is supposed to be pretty big - like drive to Santa Barbara area to surf size but nothing like this

I’ve lived at the same beach for 37 years, much of that basing my schedule around the waves.you nailed that date - Jan 5 23’ was definitely the biggest day I’ve ever seen here. The pier is one of the more sheltered spots locally, and on a regular larger W NW it’ll be well overhead there with only a few reefs lighting up visibly. I would bet it got bigger down in so cal when it was dark that night

Of course it was sock'd-in with fog this morning here in HB . . . it's lifted a couple blocks in now. . . but still in & out at the beach.
Trying to get a game-plan going for tomorrow . . . not a fan of running in the dark with fog in my little frisbee, especially with the forecast.

Fog has been bad last 3 days, clear down south, maybe you throw the Frisbie out of dana point.
I've got 2 different sets of rods staged , the 'Pixie Stix' in case it's sock'd-in again and I stay inside the harbor. And the standard issue stuff, if I go outside.
The 'plan' is to go HH and decide in the morininng . . . hopefully run up the inside of the breakwater to see if the swell is pushing through or over it anywhere.
The swell may not have enough west in it.
Also, it seems like it's late in arriving, I was at dog beach this evening and it was barely shoulder high.
So far no fog though.
