I’ve experienced a 50’ ground swell. Fortunately, with zero wind. North Pacific Ocean, remnants of a super typhoon.

I cleared HH in the dark… no fog & could see sets coming over the jetty. Def. Got big overnight…. Really Odd rolling down big swells & losing the lights from the city… then crest them, see all the lights & slide back down into the darkness.
Fished around inside the breakwater & caught a bunch of small bass.

It was interesting to see how much swell made it’s way inside from the Angels Gate & Queens Gate gaps. .

On the way back in I saw some guys surfing platform Esther … stopped & snapped a few pics …. But being solo, I wasn’t very comfortable watching for swells to not get plucked… and looking through the viewfinder ……

Those boats floating near the break are fuckin' crazy. I realize they're out of the break but I've seen waaaaay too many "outside" sets that will sneak up on a mutha fucka and grab you by the boo boo
Yep, you better be paying attention for sure.

Yeah . . . there was a small crowd of boats WAAAAY closer than me . . . but I pussed-out and kept my distance.
I've already rolled my skiff once in the surf. . . I'm not risking it a 2nd time.
Too much can happen so quickly, and next thing you know, you end up getting sucked into the impact zone. Foul a prop on some kelp, trash, or lobster gear, pull a kill-switch and don't realize it, run out of gas, suck up a bag & overheat, . . . all kinds of shit can go south.
I may have been a 'little' braver if I had someone else on board with me that knew what was up . . . but driving, navigating, and taking pics was plenty for this old dog.

I also knew the swell was 'building' and I wasn't 100% sure getting back into the harbor would even be do-able. (It looked like it was closing-out from outside). But it was fine.
I had a buddy on stand by to get my truck / trailer from HH and bring it over to the Alamitos ramp in case I didn't feel safe coming into HH.

There used to be an older long haired dude in seal that was a waiter at yucatan restaurant, both times I seen it break like that he was out in the mix!

I'm not on instagram . . . but someone showed me this . . . looks like it may have been earlier that day.
Wouldn't want to get caught inside on this one . . . .

Tony is a life long friend of mine. I was a grom of the tower 5 crew. Tony's been going places with the camera 👍

SIL surfed Rincon and the point Monday.
3 oh and craziest wave he ever surfed. Didn’t think he’d get out. On a 6’8 thin. Biggest longest he’s had. One and done. Said he’s still on an adrenaline rush 2 days later.
