Not a big Chevy guy. Starting to question my sanity...it's f'n hot. Hotter under the hood, and I think the tank switch valve took a dump...and it's on top of a muffler. Vapor locked POS...I think.

I'd much rather be on the water in 120, than here in 102.
Ya'll have a beer for me!

Ugh!!!

I can't imagine being stuck on the side of the road in 100 + degree temps.

I switched the old solenoid valve on my K20 over to the motor driven style valves used on the newer trucks. Gotta get the new style switch.

Also changed the rubber lines crossing over from the left tank to the transfer valve to steel. And then moved the fuel lines to the outside of the frame like GM did on the P30 chassis.

I don't know how you all deal with that kind of heat. 95 is getting pretty hot here.

Hey…I know a guy that works on old shit out your way…

Take the gas cap off and wait 5 minutes…it’ll run.

Edit:…won’t solve your valve problem, but it should solve the other ones.

Sorry that you're stuck out there. I hope the car gods smile down on you soon, and that Chevy starts up.

If it is that valve, you're right, it's in a bad spot and has too many hoses going to it to jack with it on the side of the road. A slight crack in one of the hoses will make it pull in air as well, and all the hoses are old and look cracked, right ! Hopefully you can get it pulled to a good spot to leave it till morning, assuming you're not too far from home

🤬 After burning forearms and smelling burnt hair, I swapped the feed line and bypassed the valve all together. No joy, but hey, at least I was in the shade for a bit. Called the cavalry, and wife showed up with a dump can. Gas in a Gatorade bottle, filled the bowl and splashed it, lit right off.

Had to do that 3 times to get home, about 15 miles. Thinking maybe an obstruction in the tank, but also wondering if I boiled the carb. "Fred", as my daughter named this truck, isn't really ever driven in heat. No AC, and 12mpg, more of a wheelbarrow for chores. It was hot today, Quadrajets kind of sit the float bowl right in the middle...and this thing has no phenolic spacer of any kind.

Before I use the rest of the dump can to torch the truck, think I'm going to go through the carb, and put a spacer on it. On the way home, I passed another old shit box, an 86, and they were asking 5k:oops: In it's defense though, I think an 86 is a tbi truck, and probably could make it 15 miles without refill and cool down🤣

1500 or 2500? Short or Long bed? I love the color.
I’m sure you can figure out a fix.

What’s the old saying “ I’d rather push a Chevy than drive a Prius!” 😂

Glad you were able to swap the hoses and make it home! I'da gave up before you did, but I'm not used to the heat either

It's a 1500 Silverado long bed. The color is a custom "Krylon Blue" with "Appliance White" wheels and roof:D

If the Prius had an 8ft bed, it would have been in service today! It's a pile, but a pile with AC🥵

My 2 favorite colors!

Take the POS to Bullhead and look for someone who does “Kustom” work. You might even get a Tough Shed camper shell out of the deal. 😂

Yer sock is plugged. (pickup mesh in the tank). Quadratoilets are not that prone to overheating. Sure an insulator plate would help, but I'm thinking you have plugged socks in your tanks.

Granted that the 40 year old tank switching setup for Gm is trash, it was not terrible...it made it well out of warranty...😅

TBI was not really mainstream until 87-88-89. Look close.

The tank and sending unit were "new" 4 years ago...with the new fuel, don't know if that means much. It has less than 15k on it in that time, and has eaten a fuel pump over a year ago.

Weird. I am actually seeing all sorts of strange fuel related issues lately, maybe they changed the blend of ethanol and did not tell anyone?

Sucks when it happens to you! Nothing like a little smack to get yor attention in life lol....even mechanics are helpless sometimes!

Pull the fuel filter out of the carburetor / leave the air cleaner off / have a fire extiguisher at arms length / Replace with a Holley 600 cfm / save the crap in case you need to swap back for smog checks ......😎

Great point!
Had a conversation with one of “our” local citizens at the Courthouse the other day. She & her adult daughter were so happy to be in the air conditioned Courthouse, stated her AC went down at the beginning of summer & no $ to fix. Gotta be miserable all day & night with these temps.

My mechanical world is so messed up, it's hard to get a view of "normal". For years now, the ethanol has destroyed diaphragm pumps and old school accelerator pumps. I'm not thinking pump this time, because cold starts are fine, and she has no issues until warm. Once warmed up, the attitude starts. Could be a clogged or deteriorated sock in the pickup, can't rule it out yet.

The other thing I thought of last night, but unrelated to the running issue, it's a return system. I bypassed the output on the valve...not the return. Have to straighten that out today. Oops:oops:

So if you thought it was the crossover valve gone bad, why didn’t you just get a 5 gallon jug of fuel and dump it in? Or was that not an option? I realize you may have been on the side of the road and just trying to make it run.

Basically, because it was a 500$ truck, and only put in a new tank on one side...never dropped the other, and previous owner couldn't remember the last time he used it...and then it had been sitting for years after.

My 84 used to do that. I landed up replacing all the rubber lines and removed the socks in the tanks. Installed a good inline filter and that seemed to help. Or you could just grab some close line pins and put them on the metal lines 😄

Hearing the Holley kits aren't great for boats, maybe run a setup like that for cheap🤣
It can't be to big an issue with this thing...it has a tank, a pump and a carb. Pretty basic fuel system.

It's an easy fix Monkeywrench. I did hundreds of these at the dealer.

If you have a lift, remove the bed. If not get four friends to help you remove the bed.

Replace the rubber lines from the left tank over the crossmember behind the cab with steel. Both supply & return. You still have to use a very short piece of rubber at the sender, valve & pump connections but not the 5 feet that is dry-rotted across the crossmember.

Re-locate the transfer valve to the right outside frame rail.

Un-do the clips for the fuel line inside the right side frame rail.

Move the fuel line to the outside of the right side frame rail. It's a mirror image. You may have to tweak it a bit around the cab mounts. You can re-use the same clips on the outside that where on the inside.

For even better results, also move the return line to the outside frame rail.

There is a nice big hole in the frame by the fuel pump where you can use hose to connect the steel lines to the mech pump.

Locate a G, RV, P30 fuel pump for a 350. It's GM PN# 6471829. It's a larger volume fuel pump (mech) for the 350. It was used in the G, RV-P chassis for fuel (vapor lock) conditions. It's about double the depth of the standard 350 fuel pump. You don't have to change the push rod. Bolts right in.

If you want to get fancy, I can give the PN#'s for the motor driven valve & switch. You have to run 3-4 more wires to the motor drivenvalve from the switch since the original only has the one wire.

I’ll give you $501 just because I have a soft spot for square bodies🤣
Nope, I'm more of a barter guy...maybe need a truck with AC...remember those W/T Chevys with a 4.3 and a 5spd?

Sad thing is, I almost picked up an AC compressor for this one this week. I put a new drier and hoses on it last year, and charged it, but the compressor seals started bubbling, so I evacuated it.

Probably bringing another project home would be a bad idea, I have enough in my garage already. It’s just a problem I have kind of like bringing stray animals home. 🤣

I installed a couple of the Fitech systems and couldn’t ever get them to run right when it got hot.

Biggest POS ever. I think I've installed two myself. Both at the client request.

I gave up trying to get em to run right. I made appointments for them at FiTech to let them figure em out.

I refused to install em ever again. 👎

I've only done one. It was a pretty stock 302 with a top loader. Worked great for that. I don't think they can handle more than an RV cam though.

It worked, but the driveability was for shit...

Cold starts were awful, and tip in was wrong at any speed. And yeah, the idle sucked too.

I told everyone...

Putting a computer on top of a hot engine really isn't the best idea! Their money, their problem.

I had real good luck with FAST. 👍🏼

Don’t all those carburetor replacement throttlebody deals have the computer mounted where the fuel bowl’s used to be or something like that? Wondered if the holly sniper was the same, but I’m too cheap and will probably stick with carburetors.
