I think it looks good! Don’t really care about the name. The bracelet is sick.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have an issue with Rolex really, I want some of them quite badly honestly. However, some of the one brand fanatics are a bit much. The daytona being called the "cosmograph" when the Speedy racing watch is the one that went to the moon is still my favorite "name" though. Wasn't there a microbrand that recently came out with a "desk diver" to be awesome?

For me it’s always been about the submariner style watches. It’s the style I’ve always gravitated towards, and ownership was a goal I wanted to achieve when I felt I’d earned enough in life to get one.

I have a Steinhart diver watch as well, which I bought YEARS before my first Rolex, but I typically try to get the homage watches in colors that I won’t get on a Rolex.

It’s not so much a matter of *wanting* to wear an homage watch over a Rolex (and don’t get me wrong, Sqaule and Steinhart make incredible watches), but it’s the difference in wearing a $500 watch vs a $15,000 watch (or more in the case of what’s on my wrist now) for day to day life, as I’m often clumsy and I don’t want to completely destroy something I’ve invested so much into. I wear them plenty, but I usually let the situation dictate it.

Wear the heck out of my Steinhart as you can see. Bracelet broke so threw a cheapo on it until new one comes. Once the 4 kids are out college in 3 years, dad is treating himself!

Love it. I threw a nato strap on the steinhart and I have no idea what I did with the original bracelet. Oops.

Picked up a green Cocktail Time from Teddy’s website…will be perfect for the 4x per year I need to wear a suit / cuffs with a long sleeve shirt.

With a decent leather strap and deployant clasp, I’m not sure what beats it at the sub-$500 price point.

Went to my favorite Degenerate hangout and was beckoned into the Breitling store by this gawd awful Raiders watch advertisement.

I’ve wanted two SuperOcean 44s for a while, the Tiffany blue one, and the olive green one.

The sales rep was wearing one I’d never seen. I guess they give those guys one watch a year, and he’s been waiting for this one and snagged it. Anyway. It’s bronze and brown. And the bronze is like.. “unfinished”(?). It develops a patina.

The promo pics on the site don’t do it justice so I stole one from Chrono. It’s stunning.

So now there’s THREE I want. Lolol

I've got a bronze case watch, the patina overtime is cool. Nice piece!

Yep, cocktail time "ice blue" one was my second watch purpose. You can't top the dials for the price point, and on a decent strap, you have exactly as you put it, a quick easy dress watch. The name may not conjure images of rolls royces or "the clout", but any watch fan in the room will honestly appreciate it more than many others, the irony of the cocktail time.

Thank you - I really like GMT II - I was wearing a two tone daily but wanted something a little less formal / flashy.

GMT II is my current favorite, but will have to go grey, no AD thinks highly enough of me :) I swear I removed all photos from social media showing my boats transom, and the jet drive sticking out of it :)

Don't feel bad @ChevelleSB406........the AD will think highly of you if you're willing to spend up to $100k on other jewelry at that store....then they will put you on the short list to get a GMTII Stainless for around $11k......I think my PEPSI retailed at $10,800 last year. As far as the AD channel loosening up this year, my AD told me they haven't heard anything of the sort. There's been a price drop on the grey market of $3-4k for many of the GMT's. Have you tried the link below?
I've bought 2 watches off of it now. Worth a look.

Yep, no matter my other watch purchases per year, without a wife and a jewelry purchase, they won't even entertain an OP, which I don't want. What I save over retail on Omegas, I will save going grey on a GMT rather than running those through them at retail. Pepsi is my number one wanted watch for past 5 years.

I have a purchase history through AD and have had pretty good connections a few years back. Now I am back on the grey market for this stuff I like. Honestly when you realize you are not going to be able to buy AD, add the tax, and then the circle jerk process that lasts years. It is not worth it. Just find a really nice grey outfit and be happy.

100%, with all that is involved, it really soured me on the enjoyment the watch would bring, so put it off even. Now, like you said, rely on your blessings to be able to afford the piece above retail, and have a pleasant experience, and not becoming a circus seal for some AD to dangle the fish in front of.

I am not a big fan of the idea of a recession or anything like that, but if it truly did go belly up, Rolex AD's would be the first place I would laugh at.

I know Bob's is popular enough in your neck of the woods, and have a steady reputation, Happy Jewelers up by me seems pretty equal reputation and pricing wise.

I have been really happy with Happy Jewelers. They have an unbelievable inventory. A ton on display you could spend hours just day dreaming. They give me a soda water, wash my chain and bracelet, and let me try on any watch for as long as I want. What else do you want? Fun relaxing afternoon. Just do not bring a wife or girlfriend there. Such a random location but such a cool shop.

So I’ve been checking out the Happy Jewelers website. Don’t want to spend the money on a new watch. What’s the oldest Rolex watch should I be looking at for less then 15k. 10 years old? I like the Submariners and GMTs.

Honestly - I would not hesitate to buy any year as long as it fits your taste. Personally I like the wear and tear on the newer ceramic bezels - depending on model post 2000 or thereabouts. My two tone GMT II is an 2006. It runs and looks perfect. That is the cool thing about going to HJ they have hundreds of watches in the display case. You do not have to ask someone to bring them out. They will let you try anything on. If you are into watches it really is the closest thing to going into a candy store as a kid.

15k is a great budget. Gets you pretty much any of the sport model watches, save for the Pepsi, on the gray market.

If you like the subs, you can find white card sub dates in the 9’s, and they’re great watches.

Like others have said, 15k is a nice budget. And by the way, most new Rolex's are cheaper than used ones. I love the GMT but the Sub really is a great first Rolex and is very wearable for daily use.

When it comes to Rolexes though, definitely have a try on of older vs new, the bracelets alone give a very different feel and owning experience. I like the new new myself, I love the engineering side of it, so the most up to date movement, slightly slimmer and shaped case, and ceramic bezel on a sub, 2022 and later would be my window. The ones a few years earlier have the maxi case, wider lugs, still ceramic, less power reserver (which really doesn't matter). If you get into the 20 plus year old stuff, I don't like the hollow end link bracelets that like to stretch and droop. Vintage isn't my thing with divers unless you go all the way back to Connery wearing his Sub in the 60's, that's one I like and the above issues I would just ignore.

With your budget, Rolex wise, except for the Pepsi like I want, you should be able to find something you like in stainless steel.

I have a black two tone sub I’m looking to sell if you’re interested. I purchased it from happy jewelers a few years back, I can save you some money and no tax 👍🏼

Stopped by my dealer. Had a couple cool older watches from the 60’s

Two pateks not my particular style but cool nonetheless.

And a very cool Huer which has Rolex movements and is the company tag merged with. Thing was good looking.

I think I may pick up another nice piece. Flip-flopping back and forth between another Panerai, a Glashutte Senator, or a Glashutte SeaQ.

Always looking for something unique, cool story, special edition, special material like carbon, titanium or maybe rose gold etc.

Any ideas that aren't mainstream?

Glashutte is a brand I like as well, if going for "under the radar" but that level above Omega/Rolex, etc. I have recently developed an affinity for the 70's styled Panorama date. For a more timeless look, and a bit more dressy, the PanoMatics are awesome as well. My favorite "out of state" AD where I buy my Omegas under favorable pricing sells GO as well if you would like an option there.

If I was to go Panerai, I think the new ones have gotten a little silly priced, and personally, I would go with one about 20 years old with the modified ETA movement to keep maintenance costs down.

If you are diver specific right now, my recent Tudor Black Bay 41mm with the burgundy dial and 5 link bracelet has been my most frequent wear, sub 5k as well.

Cool story would be the Blancpain 50 fathoms of course, but man, they are expensive these days. Tudor has a pelagos made from silver, not SS, that has always had me curious, but a bronze diver that will patina over time, that would be freakin' cool as well.

Let me know if any sound good, happy to spend someone else's money. I am buying a new Speedy tomorrow to replace one of the stolen watches, so only getting the expense, not the new watch fun :)

Panerai
https://www.chrono24.com/search/ind...earchTaskId=6625354&sortorder=5&dosearch=true

I'm not into Tudor, I'm not a real big fan of Rolex. They're excellent watches, but they're too common. If/when I get one, I'll go for Rolex. That's when I've run out of other watches I want more than a Rolex, and there are many lol. Although I may grab a white gold Celini, my father had one and I'd like to get one as a memory. https://www.chrono24.com/search/ind...earchTaskId=6807967&sortorder=5&dosearch=true

I do like the older Panerai, probably would not buy new. I'd also seriously consider an original Panerai from when they were in Firenze. I just really like the look of the one posted above.

There is also this one: https://www.chrono24.com/search/index.htm?dosearch=true&query=Panerai+Geneva
Super low numbers - Boutique edition made for the opening of the Geneva store. Tempting.

I think you mean silver 58? I've had one for a couple years. Cool piece, they get a nice tone on them but they are soft.

I get why people like that last Panerai, looks awesome, but I have a weird thing where I need that seconds hand on any mechanical watch I own, I need it to show me why I paid more than quartz :). I probably would only ever have a two hander on a proper dress watch, but I even am not that much of a stickler for the rules on dress watches, all for a second hand if available.

I like hearing someone else that is into the "story". That's my favorite part, so whether it be military service, pop culture, historical significance, etc, I like the talking point, even if I have no one to talk to about it, makes me smile. As Britt says, something to the effect of "watches are the meeting point of art, history, fashion, and engineering". Each one of those categories adds value, and carry a different weight with me. HIstory and engineering lead the way, but hell, every once in a while you see something, don't even register the brand or anything, and just think "I gotta have it" on looks alone. Its always better when there is a good story to go with the attraction.
