My CCW instructor said do not go towards a situation or a shooter, retreat at all cost and if the situation or shooter comes to you defend yourself.

Where the kid went wrong is he left the house with a knife, if he went out with nothing but what God gave him and the homeless guy pulled a knife and he took it away and killed him or the homeless guy got aggressive and he hit him and he died he would be at school right now.

I 100% support this kid and what he did but I do understand where he went wrong

You’re spot on. I’d try to scare someone off but would never engage to protect property in CA. If the kid had the knife on him going into this it isn’t going to end well. Even if someone is threatening you the best option is to get away. There are plenty of states where you can engage. CA isn’t one.

I always have two knives on me, one multi-tool, one flip. The only way I'd intend them as weapons would be the same situations where I'd draw. Those situations would involve harm to my family. I won't be the armed aggressor at this point in life, but I won't be a victim of one either.

This was about 13 years ago. Short story that I heard goes that Bikram (Bik) was having an argument with his girlfriend at their apartment. A bystander approached them and somehow intervened, wanting them to be quiet or try to break up the argument. Bik and the bystander got into a fight, Bik pulled his knife and stabbed the guy in the chest, killing him on scene.

Bik claimed self defense as the guy was supposedly on top of him holding him down and telling others to call the police.

I worked with Bik at the bike shop here in Goleta for a few months. Bikram is 100% off kilter and a threat to anyone that crossed his path the wrong way. I was always on edge when around him, he scared the entire shop when he was there. He once got into an argument with someone at a party in Isla Vista (UCSB college town) and wrote their names in .40 rounds, he showed them to me.

I guess things can change quite a lot. Back then, you could be completely mentally unstable, kill someone for trying to break up an argument, then walk away.

Now a days...We have the stories that prompt this thread.

Regardless, in CA you can't use force to defend property, just a life. And, CA also defines a dog as property so, if someone walks up your driveway and kills your dog, you will be arrested and charged if you go after him with any form of violence.

Really sad times in this state when a criminal has more rights and you are prosecuted for protecting your property. My brother and sis n law both have their CCW in OC but even so if you ever have to use it you are going to have a shit storm of problems and lawsuits. That's what has steered me away from applying.

My wife and daughter carry small mace setups. Really just enough to get clear, which is all you really should need.

I guess to some here I'm a wuss. I won't take a life over a car, or really much else. Stuff's just stuff. Watching someone foam and aspirate blood in my face is rarely on my list of things to do. Pushing a knife into someone's chest cavity is pretty up close and personal.

Homeowners would only cover a dog like that with a separate policy, often way more than the house policy . Most dogs are automatically blacklisted .
