Since Dave does nothing but sit around in his shop polishing his toys while drinking beer, maybe we can get him to do some kind of an article on Twin Whacker Boats.:yikes :rolleyes :)It seems that this is getting really popular. Eliminator has built a few, DCB has built a few and supposedly is coming out with a new hull designed for O/Bs. Which is interesting because what differences would that have verses an I/O boat? E-ticket is developing an O/B hull as well. I know there are other but maybe concentrate on the West Coast Builders due to ease of getting information.

It would be nice to hear the different philosophies from the manufacturers, cool ideas that they are implementing, and then of course driving comparisons.

O/B specific hulls will have a lot of differences from a I/O hull. Weight, center of gravity, transom heights, bulkhead locations for more cockpit space and plenty more that I have no idea about.

Ya know Tracy, I got poo-pooed by a few people when I asked about putting twins on my Nordic instead of a big block mercury. I just more or less gave in and shut up to keep peace. Sometimes I wish I'd have rusty hinge squeeked a little more. I'd have liked to explore that option a little deeper.

Maybe all these new whacked boats makes mine go up in value too? ;-)

Hot rod OB's were at their pinnacle then. I'd wager the average boater wants low maint and dependability nowadays which is part of the market surge, other part being the cost difference in a big block marine engine to go the same speed.

I agree. It seemed like every issue of HB mag had at least 2-3 hot rod ob's back then. Shoot, my boat was featured in there twice in 2000.

Would be cool to see this surge in popularity continue. I'm waiting to see the first 400 with paint matched cowlings. :)

I'm an outboard guy through and through but man, the new outboards just completely ignore the sub-25' market really. With weighing in over 660# each, they really reduce what can reasonably be done with them.

I'd really like to see Mercury come out with a high HP, low weight repower option for us "small" boats.

Who wants a EPA approved outboard for 28K? They pretty much ruined the true hardcore outboard market bring back the 2.5 and 300x motors Scott Pruitt!:thumbup:

I was reading some old hot boats this weekend, and there was a test of an f26 with twin 280's. The acceleration numbers were awesome. I'd be curious how a 28 or so accelerates with 400's? My 300's are a little lazy compared to a 2.5 in the accel dept.

Wish merc would expand the high performance four stoke line down to 200 hp or so, 200r would be cool.

Ya it would. A quiet 200hp reliable 4 stroke that doesn't weigh a ton and spins ~7k? That would be awesome on a little tunnel.

I talked to Thad at Nordic Boats about a 29' deck boat with twin 400's and how it would perform over a merc 600, I dont want to quote him but i think he
said its a better option , just more money.

A twin 400 Nordic will smoke a 600 by a solid 20mph on the top end not to mention better midrange.

He also said the take off would be better, and milage would be close. He has a customers boat at his shop with 400's

Eventually the merc racing 300 and 250 xs two strokes are gonna be no more and they will need a replacement

Before I bought my carrera, I was looking at a twin OB htm that had the seats moved back about half way. I really liked the space. My carrera has a full size hatch instead, and I actually REALLY like the storage space there. Plus, I would have to imagine moving the seats back ~18", when you have people in the back seat, PLUS the weight of the motors hanging way off the back, would really change things.

I like the ability to put anything I want back there. Its also a great place for the kids to take a shaded nap when we are hanging out somewhere.

This is exactly what I've been wanting to see. The new DCB OB specific hull has the bulkhead and rear bench moved back, but only by about 10". I'd really like to see an OB specific hull made that allows an 8 person cockpit and real storage space under the bow.

I would totally dig a ~28' boat with 4 bolsters, and a rear bench...

I was talking to Conquest about doing an outboard deck. They said they would have to retool a new deck to make it work because of the interior and swim step. It's risky to spend the money to do it but I think it would really update their line. They have such a strong following. I think they would get a positive return on their investment.

Depends on what your criteria are for the test. Best rough water handling? Drivability? Top speed? Ergonomics? Fit and finish? Style? Each manufacturer is going to have their strong points.

My boat was designed as an O/B. The original builder had changed the original drawings and the builder made all the changes. I have a playground in my cockpit it's so big.

And the twins provide a shit ton of acceleration while sipping fuel :)

My guys did one years and years ago on the generation 1 American Offshore deck boat. The boat was rigged in texas where that old mold ended up.
It was a lot of work, the downfall is you loose the full swim step and the walk way starboard goes right into a motor cowling.
The customer runs the flats in texas saltwater so OB was the only way with jackplates.

boat ran good. Last of the OG white AO Boats.

something is wrong here,just saying.2.5s on small boats 22' are a blast and haul the mail!26' and bigger need the torque of the 3.2L Optis rated at 300HP.If that is what you have,something is wrong with motors/prop or setup

I dont have 3.2 300 optis. I have the older 300 pro max. It accelerates "fine", but nowhere near the numbers the twin 280 boats seem to hit. Top speed is similar/better however.

have you ever heard no substitute for cubic inches?well it holds true with outboards too,not trying to start argument.Been building/racing merc racing 2.5s for decades and love them!your 300PM is 3.0L and will out accelerate a 2.5 (apples to apples) especially on bigger boats!

Nordic does make the rear compartment much smaller and moves the rear seat back to give you more room with the outboards.

Rough water maybe but top speed, sorry I don't thinks so. The 28 Daytona holds that title with twin 400's at 127mph, followed by Doug Wright at 124mph, DCB Mach 26 at 122 mph and then Skater at 120mph. Oh and the DCB M29 at 113mph.

Sure. DCB wins everywhere else including looks and drivability. And storage. And it has a stereo. Right now they are doing the best interiors in the business including a couple of Skaters as of late. But For the sake of a couple mph? If you want to go fast though why not a Doug Wright? It's more about what you'd prefer I guess. Plus a DCB is at a much higher price point.

Doug Wright would be my chose hands down and I love the idea of a smaller version i.e. the 28' for Havasu vs a 32.

I agree... And god help you if you have a really small boat.. They don't make anything worth a shit in that market anymore.

I could do the Elim vs DCB.. Not sure where I'd find a 28 / 30 Skater around here?

Sure. And it's a stripped down super light hull. So was the 28 speedster. It had limited billet and a tiny battery. That's why I'm saying you can't compare them to a DCB.

I agree with OD1. For me I would like to have the plusher interior and amenities verses that last MPH.
