First you get cats stolen, you have a neighborhood crackhead breaking into cars and now this.

Too late now but you need hidden kill switches.

Sorry about the theft, I like the idea of the fuel kill. Atleast then when you wake up your truck is s couple hundred yards down the street.

This isn't going to go away until the bad people are actually held accountable.

Only thing worse than a thief is a thief that steals a working man's tools. Sorry you got to go through this. It's something that all of us contractors hate but eventually have to deal with.

It had a weatherguard toolbox full. 2 gear bags full of kids riding gear in back seat. And 5 drum liners full of clothes in bed I was going to donate.

Driving around Wilmington looking. The neighbor on vehicle theft task force said they will park it. Make sure its not being tracked. Vin swap and sell it.

Sheriff said atleast 1 a night stolen. Said he has had 3 new Dodge trucks get reported in the last week. Neighbor across the way just told me the house next door there car stolen last month.

Yep. And yesterday the detective finally got the case on the thief prepared. I had to go to cutt council meeting the night before and talk with the mayor, lieutenant, city manager and council. Took 5 months.

I was worried about one of my work rigs last night. Just loaded it with materials last night. But I guess these ones are hot for vin swaps. They sell them for cash.

It is very much a violated type feeling. Sucks and even if you get it back the truck will never be the same.

Trying to figure out what all was in it is the hard part.

I was trying to get a new work rig. Not another crew cab. It had been a great truck. They said if it's not found in next day or so. Most likely never see it.

They pulled up the video that was last recorded. It was me leaving Westlake village picking up the 110 dirtbike Relaxalot posted. All the gear was in back seat waiting for next trip. Dirtbike in the vid. These thief probably know what side streets to avoid the signal cameras. As it was not spotted by any in my area.

I was in Compton a few times in the past month and I saw a few hot cars on the street, mid-stripped. Might want to take a look around there. Around Long Beach blvd and Compton blvd area.

Hope you find it brother. This is infuriating.

Do you think it could be retribution for chasing the thief in the neighborhood? Hope you find it in one piece with the tools.
I don't think so. This is a pro with the computer they plug into osb port.

Sheriff said 1 a night stolen from the area.

Neighbor on the task force said they are taking them constantly. Vin swap with a salvage vin from out of state and sold for cash. Only way to find out is run the numbers from the engine or transmission. Which usually occurs after a few months.

What does the computer allow them to do? And do you know what years they’re targeting or are susceptible?

I was looking for some stats and found this...

Pretty amazing. At some point, you'd think the insurance companies might get involved and hire some private security kinda like Chubbs and a few others do with private fire fighting services...or inject some of that $1.8B in losses to the PD in hot areas to get more boots on the ground.

You would think, but it's just easier to jack up the rates on hardworking people to cover their losses...

Any truck with the push button start.

3 neighbors heard the alarm. They said it made the chirp like I turned it off from remote.

They plug into the port and it basically let's them program a new key signal.

I saw a car scoping out in front of my neighbors 5 days ago. Thought they were scoping his truck for the catalytic converter and chased them off. Probably scoping my truck.

thats the problem, they have no incentive to do so.

does this cost them tons more money? Yes, and they turn right around and pass that onto us chumps. Since we're paying more, that now means their profit margins are higher, assuming their % take is the same.

the other move they do is to have a portable receiver they'll place near the home, which amplifies and broadcasts the keys code so they can just unlock and start it like they actually had the key.

They can program blank keys to the vehicle.
This is what I was wondering too? I thought with keyless remote fobs these were much harder if not possible to start or put in gear without the fob.

So they plug something into the obd and reflash a new fob? How do they do it so quickly.

What about the addition of one of those aftermarket security devices they offer when you buy a new vehicle? I think the one I was offered on my Chevy Silverado was called CARR? Supposedly it jambs or changes the frequency somehow? I don’t know? I figured it was all a dealer add on scam and did not do it, but does something like that even help?

Yeah. They asked me how close the key was. With the broken glass and alarm going off for a short period. Figured they smashed window jumped in and plugged into the port.

This is old technology, they use "rolling codes" and encryption now days. "Relay" attacks are mostly non existent.

A faraday box to put your keys in should stop that.

I called onstar only way is if it was currently active or you have to be in vehicle and push button to reactivate.

If I had siriusxm they could track it from that. Was told that's there fastest method of recovering them.

The "fobs" use "rolling codes" just like garage door openers. They change with every press of the button.
A OBD tool is a couple thousand dollars but they are stealing several a week or month.

From my understanding they can disable all of it with the "OBD tool"

Air Tags are worthless.. If you have an I phone it sets an alarm off in your phone that you are being tracked!

RD
I disagree. I have a tag in my daughters jeep that is not synced to her phone, it has never set off an alarm on her phone. And at the same time, if someone steals my truck and that alarm does happen to go off in the thief's phone, good. They now know they are being tracked, and good luck on finding the airtag.

I am a dumbass for not having a hidden GPS. @boatpi has mentioned it countless times.

My buddy just posted his showing how good they work.

My busy with work excuses to myself are worthless now.
Need to have my metal guy make the front fence and rolling gate asap.

Literally last night was told to make sure all your vehicles are empty by a 70 year old customer when talking about the recent thefts.

Don't beat yourself up, moving forward you know "it can happen to you" and adapt accordingly.

I know they can steal whatever they want but I will do my best to slow them down. I have an old school club and kill switches on all my vehicles.

And I agree with @81Sprint that AirTags may not be much, but if a thief knows he’s being tracked and he continues then he’s risking getting caught. I bet he’s more likely to park it and bail then to pull over and try to find it.

With so many trucks being stolen. Ravelco is basically a kill switch for less than $1000. Takes maybe 10 seconds to put on/remove before leaving your car.
