Mid 40’s are slipping by, I’ve had plenty of fun but also backed off the throttle to make sure I was around to raise my kid. She’ll start highschool next year, wife and I are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel for retirement in the next decade. I had this theory about eating just enough carnitas to knock the bad years off the end of my life, still think there is some validity to that concept, just about the time you can’t wipe your own ass you check out.

Watching our parents get older is tough, but also I consider it a privilege to be there for them as issues arise, I guess the term is sandwich generation (in the middle of raising kids and taking care of aging parents) I realize this is just another chapter, and a pretty good one at that.

The way I see it is I’ve got about 15 really good years left in me, maybe more, hopefully more, but ya never know. There are a few things on my list I need to do now as aging out of those activity’s is a reality you don’t get around.

The wife and I have a feet first marriage, only way out is dead on a stretcher feet first down the hall, who ever dies first wins in one of these deals, as the other is left to pick up the pieces. Insurance is paid up, but not enough where I’m afraid to stand in front of her on a cliff, but if something happened her and sancho could buy a nice boat and take some good vacations 😂

So the question is how hard do you drop the throttle and when so you hit the finish line hard and content you didn’t leave anything this life offers on the table, but also don’t come up short and be miserable?

Not sure but I had pastor tacos for dinner last 3 nights. So many good street vendors now it's crazy. 6 between here and Redondo beach Blvd. All with long lines. One I have been going to probably sells 2000 tacos Friday and Saturday night.

If you stick to al pastor (which is the pic you posted) vs carnitas I think all will be fine...legit with the pineapple up top ...

Total balancing act but I think that’s life in general. If you’re very comfortable you likely need to twist the throttle a little more. If you’re waking up at 2am wide eyed, you probably need to lean back. Likely in a life well lived you have a balance between health, finances, family, and some sort of mental release. If you feel like any one is lacking, go get some of that. If you feel like they are all lacking a little, that’s normal too. Good luck , Sir.

I'm roughly your age. 1 in college, 2 following that may or may not go. My parents moved on more than 10 years back...both gone by the time my daughter was 9.

Life throws more curves than we prepare for though. New hurdles arise, be it medical expenses or new difficulties with the younger 2 boys. Take each challenge as they come.

I may have 15-20 years left, but I may also have 15-20 minutes or days. I just try to be happy with what I've done today, and hope that work done in some way helps my kids.

You might start with that river dave tramp stamp you've been longing for. 🤣
@RiverDave should offer free RDP tattoos at events, Cody from lazertown gave out free lazertown tattoos at KOH this year, I heard about 30 people took him up on it 😮

Taco stand and Foothill and Towne. Delicious. Quesadillas are amazing. Wash them down at the Brow. That will take off some end years.

You don't stop, you just slow down. I'm right there with you and still do pretty much anything I want physically, I just don't go in blind. Take a pause to pick the best route without breaking yourself and have at it.

All interesting questions here. I’m 45 and starting to think of the same things. I live life the same as I’ve always done but you can feel your body starting to slow down and you certainly feel it more the next morning. Where I used to move and lift things myself, I find myself asking for help more often. Just listen to your body.

Acceptance of knowing you have less in front of
you than behind you I think is key, but certainly there’s a lot of quality life left to live. It’s like switching gears…grab another and hang on for the ride!

Have you tried that newer taco stand on Anza and PCH, in front of Walgreens? I’ve been tempted to hit it on the way home. They’re usually there later in the week and through the weekend.

Not yet. Best 1 I have found is lomita Blvd just west of Normandie. In front of the new 711. Tacos $2.50 Sign days $1 tacos Tuesday. If there same size best deal. Huge operation compared to others.

Surprised Torrance allows them. 1 in front of bowlero is good. But small tacos. $2.50

My uncle told me once...

You're only young for a little while, but you're old for a Really long time.

It didn't make much sense to me when he said it, but it's making a lot more sense to me now!

Your body will tell you when it's time to throttle back. Till that happens...

Party on Garth!!!

Eat well, stay in shape, and you'll have way more than 15 good summers ahead. 👍🏼

My wife, who just finished battling 2 years of cancer, is full bore to travel the world & see as much as possible. She's in Thailand right now with friends for couple weeks

Me on the other hand, I'm happiest when things are calm & I have time to meditate & piddle around. I don't see the point in exhausting myself with travels, but I will be going with my wife most of the time, which will be places I want to go like diving, tropical, Europe. No bucket list though.

To each his own. Just enjoy life & help others a much as possible.

Fifteen good years? I turn 68 next week. I’ll leave it on the table when I’m gone or too sick or injured to do what I want. In the meantime I’m in the gym twice a week, hitting the MX track (to ride) today, laying on my back in the garage re-gearing the Jeep and rode the Harley Yesterday. I have 2 plates and 21 screws in my left leg, have broken my back waterskiing, have had a broken wrist for 20 years, broke ribs Jet skiing, crashed a dirtbike and broke my hand and knocked myself out two years ago. This pic was taken seven months ago. If you’re fortunate enough to have good health, old is a state of mind.

So the question is how hard do you drop the throttle and when so you hit the finish line hard and content you didn’t leave anything this life offers on the table, but also don’t come up short and be miserable?

IMO ... the answer to this question is pretty simple -- but it's not really easy to do.
Wealth, education, all types of success, (including with one's family) mean NOTHING without your health.
I believe most people are going to kick the bucket a pre-determined age (insurance companies have this down to a science). The issue is if you're not healthy you're forced to pull back the throttle early.
If you maintain good fitness - the time between enjoying life and kicking the bucket will be short .... as compared to being dependant on outside help for the last 10-20 yrs of sitting in a lazy boy every day before meeting one's maker.
First 3 steps in this IMO are weight, BP and getting some exercise.

Memento Mori (remember you die) is a mantra I have learned to try and live by since turning 50 a couple of years ago. It is one of the reasons we sold our house in Reno and forced a lifestyle change that is not for everyone. The empty nest helps with decision-making that cultural norms might consider reckless.

Socrates believed that death could not be evil because of the soul's immortality because freeing the soul by guiding it to eternal truths was the entire point of life. When death does come, it is a liberation of the soul.

The daily dichotomy of balancing western societal norms with things that bring us pleasure is absolute. We can't be foolish because we have to reserve for our later years, but I'm incredibly aware that my personal health plays a vital role in extending happiness into later years. Retirement only to pass aware in the first twentyfour months is okay if I lived a fully meaningful life, but spending ten years trapped in front of a TV screen watching Fox news all day sounds miserable.

Socrates' "Good Death" consideration helps me deal with fear, like Grizzly Bears. It would be a legendary way to die to be eaten by a Grizzly bear. Dying in a nursing home with Tucker Carlson in the background sounds terrible.

This is me at 75, I'll be 76 this May.
Crossle 1600 FF. Are you still doing the KOH? That should keep you busy in to your 70's or 80's ;)
Only thing I throttled back is, riding superbikes. Broken bones and very closed calls. Sticking with vintage m/c only, putt putting. ;):D

One brush with death will change your future , live every day like its your last , Every day is a gift !
Very true...the closer you've been, the more you appreciate the ability to do anything. Many things I do now, I shouldn't be able to. Many things they told me I wouldn't do again.

Slow down when and if you want to, not because "you should".

Mortality (my own and in general) has been on my mind a lot lately. I know they say the older you get the more people you know that die, but I have never known so much death as I've seen in the past 2 years. Lost both parents but also, a lot of friends and I'm talking people in the their late 30's and 40's. People that shouldn't be dying. Cancer mostly. Good friend, long time boating buddy is fighting stage 4 cancer right now. he'll be gone in a couple months max. Buddy I work with wife had a pain in her side, go to check it out. stage 4 lump, dead in one month. Exact same thing happened to a girls husband I work with. not to mention the members here that have died over the past 2 years. Fuck pulling the throttle back, push it forward. People dropping like flies, your number can get punched tomorrow. one just never knows. With that said, with age comes wisdom and doing stupid shit isn't advisable. But definitely do the shit you want to. We are. Fuck it.

My daughter laid the guilt trip Heavy on me one day. She said...

Different spot. That's PCH and Vermont.

That spot is still there but a brick and mortar now. But he has who knows how many taco trucks. Just on Carson street they parked 1/2 mile apart all the way down to the 405. Bomb shrimp tacos. Pastor and asada not as good.

Prices in that area of south Torrance are nuts! I do a lot of work right around there. Nothing ghetto about it. But surprised they are allowing street vendors in Torrance. Across western anything goes. Gateway! I moved out of the gateway house 3 years ago. Getting ready to develop it.

Dribble, you're kicking ass, Spectra's only, all I can say is dam!
I better get my ass moving a little more. 40's were great, 50 was easy, 55 kicked my ass, started feeling every dumb thing I ever did. Gonna be 59 soon, lost 30 lbs since covid. Got some more to go. But I enjoy every day, see my friends and family often. Still party when the occasion calls, maybe till 1 instead of 4.

Mid/late 50's here, still going to concerts & festivals, picked up my guitar after a 30+ year hiatus and been on couple stages locally, still wakeboarding, still snowboarding, still working late nights and weekends... My feelings are that I will keep doing what I've been doing until I can't do it anymore because I know I won't be able to do it forever. You will know when to say when.

Yep I sure did
I’ve cut out drinking sodas of any kind
Not eating at any fast food ( anyplace that has a drive thru)
Been walking more ( but not enough I guess )
Gained 20 pounds since doing that post about getting in shape
I’m 64 now
It’s been over a year now of being out of work so need to get back into doing something not just laying around all day
But my motivation has not been good
And having a few ( or more) beers ( even thou it’s coors light) doesn’t help I guess

I don’t drink at home but I also don’t cook for myself so definitely need to change more

Lost my dad 7 years ago this July.

Mom is in her mid 60s still waterskiing and snowboarding.

In Laws still snow ski and we all hiked half dome 2/3 years ago.

I don’t consider mid 60s dead by any means.

It’s throttle down and enjoy it. But we want to do that for as long as possible, so it’s also throttle down on exercise and health- cardio and weight training regularly. Goal is 6 days per week often twice per day. Eating clean is key. No crap is ingested. I started this hard 2 years ago at 38. I was in decent shape, but 40 now and in the best shape of my life and still have progress and goals to hit.

Daughter is off to college in 8 years and my wife and I will be non stop travel and enjoying but keeping the health routine front and center.

Some of our best friends are on the same program and we’re looking forward to enjoying it with them. I’ll still dabble with work but the businesses and R/E won’t need me present regularly which is a goal in 8 years. So no fixed income bs.

We going through health issues with parents on both sides and it’s tough. They’re in their early 70’s to 80 and should be in better shape. I don’t want to be shit at that age. I won’t have to unless cancer or an accident are dealt. It’s a choice. Just wish I would have made the choice and focused on health earlier, just didn’t have old peeps close enough till now to see what it’s actually like if you don’t take care of your body.

40. Bah. I’ve been a high performance athlete and all around speed junkie all my life. Never faster than when I was 42. Cut my Marlboros down to 5 a day and did a dozen workouts a week. Rode 10,000 miles and swam 2,000 miles that year. Good times. Still 163 pounds and fit. But haven’t worked out in 4 years. Marlboros back up to 15 a day. My advice. Do what you want. And drink more. Nothing hurts when yore numb.

Turned 46 this year two days after winning my 3rd FE2 regional championship. I'm always active, gym 3-5 days a week. Bench 385. 8 more years until both daughters are out of college. So it's full blast till that time happens. I started keto & intermittent fasting every day since July. I have more energy than most 20 year olds. Nothing wrong with Carne asada bro!

Death by ribs, bringing them up to temp nice and slow for a Sunday afternoon meal with the family. Chillin with the dog out back watching some TV on the patio, pretty much a perfect Sunday in SoCal sun, maybe 70* in the sun with a mild breeze. The pup is resting up for his evening 3 mile walk, life is good today.

40. View attachment 1201201 View attachment 1201201 View attachment 1201201
I still drink a couple of days per week. I bet I could take down more tequila than most…

Good luck with those Marlboros, brah.
