I need an intervention. Buying another boat. I don’t have room, I don’t really need it, but I just can’t pass it up.

Going to fire up the 21’ Shadow ski boat.
This thing handles awesome and is super comfortable. This will be my first V-bottom. I’m excited to get it on the water.

That looks like a true survivor.

No true tunnels. :(

Except Ben Marrones’ “Jones tunnel”. He is on the race committee....
He ran a full tunnel.
His boat is the one with the wing.

The picture :2010 Parker Start

Bob Teague in the GN 77
Ben Marrone in the Jones tunnel
Scott Nolind in the #435 War Canoe

The War Canoe outlasted the two beasts...We took the class 5 win.
I ran the last leg. By the time I finished, the trim gauge had broken off the steering wheel, my windshield was gone from hitting a duck at 105 mph, and my propeller was missing half a blade. That was a badass race.
Teague blew out the whip strut holding the drive shaft...total carnage...Ben Marrone ,in the Jones(full tunnel)suffered the same fate, as the rough water destroyed the big V-drive as well. Truth be told, I knew Teague’s monster GN was faster. So was Bens tunnel. It was the short course , so you were in a lot of snotty water. We figured if we pitted late and got a big lead, (even if it was just pit time we we hadn’t used yet) we would push the race at our pace...
It seemed to work out...they ran hard trying to catch us after they pitted and we didn’t. Eventually, the rough water and high rpm did them in.
We just kept our foot to the floor making 4 min laps. It was our first real boat race we had ever competed in. Met so many nice people that day.
Look at the engine cover of my boat in the photo...does anybody recognize him?

Spoke with Joe Abellera today. He thinks he has a customer from Europe that may want my DBR...He also may have a line on a low hour 300xs engine. We decided to put it back together with a 15” short shaft and an XS power head. We will put on the different chaps to accommodate the alien cowl. It will look identical to how it is now.
I had just planned to take it home for simplicity’s sake, but Joe said this was the way to go. It will make the boat a daily driver, instead of a boat that belongs at Parker.

I have an in control shifter on my Talon...
I was rolling for 25 miles, then hit a nice long straight. When I hit 90+ mph, it popped out of gear with an ugly sound, and we came to a sliding stop. Reached down, gear shift seemed to be in a slightly forward position, but not in gear, apparently...
We got towed in by Bill , the nice fisherman. Prop was frozen in place. Totally locked up.
Hoping HST can tell me what happened and cost to repair. Shifter moves...no shifting going on, though.
Pulled bonnet and confirmed shift linkage was moving properly ...it was, but lower unit would not spin.

Crap.

High horse power gearcase failures are not pretty, sounds like a pinion/fwd gear failure, which takes out most of the bearings. very unlikely its rebuildable and expect any sort of reliability. lucky that didn't cause handling issues at that speed.

I actually had my hands full of an uncooperative boat. We slid left and right a couple times before it settled in. Very spooky. Glad I wasn’t going any faster.

Looks like it might be time for a 374HP DBR Talon???:D Im always interested in how the same motors run on different hulls. Glad that gear lock up was uneventful!

The 3 liter sportmaster is a shit gear case. Garbage. Non ratcheting for one...and the second it must have a positively locked in gear shifter. The clutch dog shattered along with the prop shaft. More than likely none of it it is salvageable as when it spits the clutch dog the housing fractures around the pinion gear area.

Unrelated rant... all Mercury had to do was make a bigger 2.5....instead a half bastard copy of an omc looper with a complete shit exhaust with some fancy some fuel non tuneable injection and a junk gearcase. Oh well. Anyhoo bro.... you need a new one in a box. :) Fishing boat fine...but never ever shift a 3 liter case with a proper prop while the motor is running.

Yeah , that makes for a few moments of help! You should be running a monitor bottle inside the boat. They are easy to make out of alpha parts and can be hooked into the engine alarm. On your next case or if this one is salvageable have the billet seal carriers put in too.

I didn’t know Mercury had cut us so short on the factory gear case...
Wow.
With the “lockout” on the system, I can’t start in gear.
We need to figure out a new system.

When run hard, I change gear case fluid every 5 hours, never make a running shift with pitch over 23, and when you have to shift it running, never above idle. Gear case fluid change 3 to 1 over engine oil and filter.

Break in the new gear case just like you would a new engine. I've made a habit on a new unit to shift it running with no propeller any many times as you have the patience for, the clutch dog, gears, plunger, pins all need to be broken in also. Oh, change the fluid again!!!!!!!!

knock on wood, no gear case failures........only one floating rock:D

I have 110 hours on my 300xs sportmaster 1.62 gearcase. No issues so far. I change the oil every 20-25 hours with the newer Merc racing gear oil.

I had Fallon install the good double seal bearing carrier and the breather kit.

Rolling the Daytona on Sunday...
Lake is smooth and relatively uninhabited. November is a great month to boat!

Outrigger is closed because the docks got silted in with sand etc a few winters ago. Made it to the Pointe in Rio Vista for lunch. Amazing riding in the 28 Skater with 250s pacing side by side with Drew at 106mph. Fantastic day

Shithead of the week
Here is a total loser....don’t support Hollywood actors.
For that matter , screw the NBA , NFL, Nike, and the news media.

I am even starting to hate Fox...

Breitbart news... check it out if you don’t already go there.

1993...Red rock Canyon...We dubbed it “The shuttle jump” because of how high you were mid flight over the road....
The biggest natural jump in the desert. I’m on my CR 500 Honda, Varner engine, 4th gear pinned. If you missed, you hit a cliff face and fell backwards to the ground 30 feet. Later that day, I saw that happen. Life flighted him out of the desert with two broken legs.
