Wild Bill is lending me a couple new wheels to try on the Cougar....
1. 30 pitch lightning 3 blade

2. 30 pitch Mercury cleaver

3. 32 pitch Modified Hoss 3 blade.

We are going to run it at current engine height, get our numbers, and then go up an 1/8” at a time and check top speed and slip factor.
Then, run the 30 and 32 BBLADES against those numbers. We may see 120 mph in the next set of tests...

These are the 32 pitch numbers at 10% slip....120 mph is in this engine / prop/boat combination. We will do the testing and report the actual numbers.

Good news regarding the power bleed steering system !! We looked on line, seems these machines have dropped in price to about $250-$300 range. Wild Bill bought one of the first, paid too much!
Where do you see that, still look like $850 to me? Got a hook up?

I’ll ask Wild Bill where he saw the least expensive model of power purger.

Do you honestly think I would come onto a public forum and post pictures of anything that my ex is even possibly entitled to? Wow I might be slow at times but I am not dumb!
Anything and everything that was built between us was split down the middle!
These small toys you see are what I’ve built back since loosin it all to the marriage! Wow

It looks like you have to be very careful what you are looking at online. I thought Discount Marine had this system for $ 221.68, but that is just for the 2 cylinder adapter. The complete system is $ 894.21. I Boats has the complete system for $ 714.71, Amazon is $ 748.30 and there is a place called Black Bear Sports that lists the system at $ 646.74. Never heard of Black Bear so if you buy it there let me know how the transaction works out for you. :D

Reflections on this test session....

We met at the speedway..(Oroville Afterbay) at about 8:20 am ...put on Wild Bill’s worked 32 Hoss. Did NOT raise the engine height, despite 30+ pounds of water pressure...
Took a 3 mile easy pass to warm her up, then turned around and went to 70 mph. I upped the speed by 10 mph at a time...eventually reaching 122.44 and 122.75 mph on 2 separate GPS. The boat was stable. When I hit 115 mph, I felt the tail end come up and instantly it increased rpm and speed...it felt like it was riding on the gear case only. A small bit of side to side wobble, but nothing crazy. I slowly came down from speed, trying not to starve cylinders by pulsating the throttle.

I knew this boat had it in her !! I know there is some left....raising the engine will push this to 125 mph, in my opinion. Wild Bill and I are happy with today’s results to say the least... not bad for a single engine , 21’ boat! I was running 2 seats and 20 gallons of AV gas

It's always exciting when you bolt on something that really works. There may be another 3 to 4 hundred more rpm by lifting the motor 1/4 of an inch. We were running 6.5% slip. That would put this boat in the 127 to 130 range. I have never heard of a 21' Cougar single outboard running more than 114 mph. We may have to wait for some colder weather and a little chop on the water to get there.

Wow you guys past me up! All I could get from the Daytona was 119mph stretched out with the Merc 32” Lab Cleaver
It would run right up to 112 then it seemed to lift the ass end up and jump to 118 I didn’t like that feeling at all! Felt sketchy as if it was just riding on air and the lower unit!
Backing it down it settled in ok,
I think in a race I will be safe at 110, it feels good there and I can back it down in a Sec to 90.
These DBR 300’s are off the hook! Everyone that comes up to it says the same thing what the F is that thing!lol
I say it’s American made monster...

Darcy,
When the ass end lifts, it does feel strange, but the rpm and mph jump when it happens! The lil Cougar was flat screaming today...I’d love to try your 32 merc Cleaver...Bill had a 30 cleaver there today and it ran 116 mph ...seemed like I needed to go up on the engine. Same with a 30 lightning ET 3 blade... it ran the same as the cleaver. Going to try a Hackney 4 blade 34 my friend has. We ran 113 mph with a stock 300xs on my 19’ Cougar with that Hackney 34

. I think the DBR might go 125 mph with the 34!
My water pressure is so high, I know I can go up 1/4 to 1/2 inch more.
More testing needs to happen, but we are on the right track.

Darcy, the STVs are WAY more aerodynamic then the Daytona and Cougar for that mater. They are also alot safer as they dont have the Huge "mouth" opening in front..If you ever go to the drags, all the quick fast daytona jets have a wing mounted between the pickles at mouth FOR GOOD REASON!!David Dreifort (dez Nuts) in Florida recently went 138mph in his STV with a warmed up 225hp Pro Max with sportmaster gearcase no less!!And there is also an OLD record by Micheal Dixon at 151mph in his STV.we might have to do one of these frontal wings if you guys keep pushing 125+ in daytona/cougar:eek:

So , where do I get a wing?
I’ve seen them on a few drag tunnels.

Also, the weight difference is huge as well as the length and width.
My Cougar weighs just under 1900 lbs and I think an STV is 700 lbs or more lighter.
I’ll never be able to run with that crowd, but at least they are Outboards!!

I am ALL ABOUT OUTBOARDS....maybe I should start a Church, or something...

AJ,
We appreciate the kind words...
We do this for fun, but we take it pretty seriously.
When the Churches twin hit 130 mph, I can assure you that it was a lot of work. Bully is a serious guy when it comes to boating. He dedicated himself to fine tuning each of his boats until he reached the 130 mph Outboard goal.
When I built this Cougar, it was made exclusively to win Parker...So, we WILL keep the numbers coming...
As far as the “wing” goes, I’ll put it on so it can be removed...I’d prefer the “clean” look too! But It might save my bacon keeping the nose down at 125 mph!

Greg Shoemaker (GS Marine in Norco) in Socal builds the Socal tunnel jets i believe and they usually rig the drag boats with a carbon fiber wing.its adjustable and looks pretty cool actually.i am sure they are PROUD$$$ of them.LOL

I would reach out to Chris Starkweather at B1 Racing. He’s rigged plenty of boats with the wing.

I'm in. I'll Bring the Cougar down for a this Saturday morning blast. You in for sure Paul? Who else?
Yes I am in for sure. Anyone else? That’s always doubtful. Everyone’s hung over and sleeping. They end up launching when I pull out.
Second shift. LOL
