The crown jewel of North County.. I don’t give a shit where you live.. don’t care how good you think your taco shop is.. all must bow to the king..

Nachos taco shop.. I don’t know what they marinate their carneasada in.. not sure what the sweet stuff is they put in the salsa you get with the chips and salsa.. (which is different than the other salsa you have to order it). It’s the best.

I would pay an ungodly amount of money to franchise one of these in havasu. It would put all the rest out of business in a week.

If you are ever in North San Diego you owe it to yourself to stop here.

It has been the same for 35 years I have been coming here.. weirdly all the same employees and none of them seem to age at all? Maybe it’s the food?

Sounds good i’ll have to check it out.
Another North County taco spot is Los Tacos they have the best pastor. They cook it on the vertical rotisserie with the pineapple on top.

I had a Mex American buddy, who happened to also be an excellent cook, tell me the great Mex food we grew up eating in So Cal was Northern Baja style. Seemed like it used to be available all over the place. Nacho’s Tacos may well be one of these. Now they’re a not so easy to find. Could it be, much of Northern Baja is a pretty nice place. Moving north to So Cal, to what is now often an expensive shit hole, is just not desirable anymore to the locals of Northern Baja?

Right across SMBlvd from the high school.
When our kids were (much)younger we'd park in that supermarket parking lot to watch 4th of July fireworks.

The problem is you think a carne asada burrito is good in the first place. That’s basically Filiberto's shit food. A real burrito has red or green chili in it. With a home made tortilla. Until you eat Carolina’s or Rito’s down in the hood in Phoenix, you have no idea.

Dos Portrillos in Perris has some pretty awesome tacos and burritos - they also have al pastor on the vertical spit. Before Covid they had queso fundido (melted cheese) with a choice of meat and 6 fresh corn tortillas made by the abuelita behind the counter - it was awesome, too bad they don’t offer that anymore.
For shrimp tacos Taco Nazo is the place to go.

I’m down there a few days next week. Gonna have to give Nacho’s a shot.
We usually do Crack taco for new school stuff or Cuatro Milpas for old school. Hit Mike’s Red Tacos a few times lately. Good stuff. SD is tough to beat for Mexican food.

Not exactly a taco shop but the pueblo tacos are the best I have ever had.

puebla / grilled carne asada, smoked applewood bacon, portuguese sausage, grilled onions, cheese, morita salsa

I'm dying here. There are no taco shops up here. The mexican restaurants idea of a taco is a Rosarita taco out of the box and ground beef. Might as well go to Taco Bell. That's the first thing we do every time we get to Havasu . . . hit the Mexican restaurants/taco shops, usually about 3 days in a row. 🌮

So, do the grocery stores sell what you could use to make Mexican food? If so, that and some internet recipes might get you through the summer.

How's it compare to Miches?

I go almost every Wednesday for the fish tacos special at the Location by my house. $2 fish tacos and a caguama modelo michelada. Tuesday is the birria tacos which are bomb also. Was just chatting with the owner on Wednesday. Known him forever. His Pops owned the Los paisas carniceria In Torrance. And I was a regular there forever. Used to buy 30 lbs for $50 for my parties in high-school along with a keg. Back when Carne was cheap and not popular.

If you are in the area of Del Mar/ Carmel Valley go to Nico's Taco Shop. Best fish burrito I have ever had. Use to be able to walk there from our house. Funny just the other day my wife said I wish we could go to Nico's.

You beat us there by two hours it appears. 😁
Next time we'll have to try the Carne Asada, yesterday it was Carne Adobada Street Tacos.
I'd recalled that years ago you mentioned that was your favorite Taco Shop was in that area, after trying it yesterday, we're in agreement, we'll be back. 👍
The very nice lady at the counter gave me a small sample of their homemade Jamaica Aqua Fresca ---- WOW, really good. 👍👍
The lady explained that they boil the hibiscus flowers, then squeeze them to extract the juice.

so overrated. Mi rancho market in Esco is 10 times better
Is Mi Rancho the same as Conchitas ? Or has one replaced the other since their addresses are the same ??
I thought TJ's was good, but it's way to crowded for our liking the one time we tried it.

My go to has always been El Indio. Been going since college and can never get enough. A few changes there, but mostly the same since the. 70’s.

El Indio wound up on Triple D and I went because of that. It was legit good. Haven’t tried any of the others though.

El Chaparrito in Livermore is fantastic. One of three things in California I'm going to miss.

Yes. I always say the best Mexican food in Montana is Angie's kitchen. I made a crockpot full of shredded beef over the past two days. I'm going to pre-make some burritos and save some for breakfasts while we have guests next week.

Plenty of mediocre pre-made tortillas in the stores, just people around here prefer ground beef for their meat. Or Chicken with no seasoning. Or if there is "shredded" beef advertised, it's chunks of a pot roast, NOT like chili colorado! Like grandma's pot roast. LOL They do sell Chorizo here, but I'm not sure who buys it.

However, no skirt steak for carne asada.

If flank steak is available that is a good second option. And Kinder's makes a good Carne Asada seaoning and Fajitas seasoning if you can't find the traditional seasonings to do it yourself.

Amazing that any business like this can survive in California especially to produce a good product and manage overhead.. It never gets better for a food business owner in Cali. Word of mouth eclipses any reviews.

A Montana Taco story.
Reason 347 not to move to Montana if you are Californian.

Last week we attended a meeting in which a fundraiser dinner was discussed and a taco bar was on the menu.
They spent 10 minutes debating if ground beef or steak should be served. Ground beef won the day. I'm going to suggest taco Bell cater next year because they are paying $26 a person for catering and charging $50 a person. Yes for a ground beef taco, likely served in a crispy preformed shell. There is no good Mexican food in Montana available commercially. Even the Mexicans are smart enough to know not serve the legit stuff, because they won't buy it here. I gotta find a dirty truck peddling the goods.

Add that to your reasons California, right below weather.

You ever tried frying store bought tortillas (Mission or Guerrero) into crispy shells for tacos?

Im white but when we make Mexican food we fry our own chips and shells (from store bought tortillas, though sometimes we get lucky and find a store that makes them fresher than packaged ones). I’ve never used those pre-made shells and my family has permission to shoot me if I ever suggest it.

I’m taking Montana off my list. Maybe Idaho isn’t as bad…

My Latina wife absolutely HATES that I love White People ground beef tacos and seek them out! I guess growing up in Kansas a bit was the cause of that.

My dad’s Mexican and he loves a good ground beef Taco! He’s also where I get my love of Jack in the box tacos from!

But we never ate the crap in your photo growing up.
