3 department secretaries and the chief of staff of the Biden Administration had a conference call with the port owners and now there is a deal higher than their original offer. Now Biden is taking a victory lap and getting a token from unions.

Just what do you think was said on that call?

Just saw that Max wage was 39 an hour under the old agreement that just expired. How the hell do 1/3 of the workers make over 200k a year with a max base rate of 39 an hour? How much overtime are these guys working?
Longshore utilize 3 shifts and cover operations 24 hours a day. 1st shift- 8 am to 5pm. 2nd shift- 5pm to 3pm 3rd shift 3am to 8am. The 3rd shift is rarely worked. 1st and 2nd are worked almost everyday of the year, there’s maybe 3 or 4 no work holidays. Longshoremen are assigned a shift, usually 1st or 2nd. If there is an abundance of work, you can return to the dispatch hall and pick up a job on your unassigned shift. Some pretty much work 16 hours per day. That’s how $39per hour can turn into $160k plus per year.

Foxnews is saying the dockworkers agreed to suspend the strike until Jan 15.
I believe that is the 90 day cooling off period the head of the union described. If this was forced from Biden, most likely the dock workers will still be on the job, but work at a snails pace. Time will tell where we stand.

They agreed to a 61.5% wage increase over 6 yeas. The rest of the issues are tabled until 1/15/25.

The Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 which requires a 80 day cooling off period didn’t apply in this strike.

So just like the UAW strike where dodge employees got big raises and benefits, and are now jobless because of their greed. This whole deal is going to work out about the same I have a feeling. If they make it through the first year i will be surprised.

I totally understand how labor unions can turn to collective bargaining for compensation and benefits. But, I do not understand why they should be able to control or have a say in their employers use of automation. I believe our U.S. ports aren’t even in the top 20 worldwide ports when it comes to efficiency.
