I think it’s hitting Robert a bit more now. I will say that not one time did he panic. He never yelled, screamed or shut down. He did what he could and once he realized the boat was overpowering him, he did the smart thing and got back in the boat. We went about the day laughing and smiling. We joked about going on a sunset cruise… then he started to feel horrible that he did the service this year, and maybe he missed something. We use absolute every season. And, feels bad they got the boat in the yard after hours after their day on the water. He doesn’t post on here, but thanks everyone for the advice and help.

You have a good man there. Could have been way worse. Enjoy the rest of the trip.

Shit happens. You guys made it back in one piece and gel coat can be fixed. This will just be another “remember when” story.

100%. I think he was just mad that he made the judgement call that the boat was clearing itself out. All will be good shortly.

Two boats passed us before the family came by to help us. Super nice people.

Thank you for the recommendation!

Think I saw you being towed in while we were launching at Jack smith? Saw a boat being towed and was super close to the rocks at Jack smith entrance

Yes that was us. We barely missed those rocks at the entrance. Current seemed stronger than normal so that didn’t help.

We have a large 30 foot boat and lost the motor in Powell during a wind storm. We ended up with some bad gas at Antelope and the motor just grenaded. We were traveling about 40 mph, at around bouy marker 50. Popped the anchor out to hopefully drag on something as the wind was fierce. We hit a shale out cropping which chewed the bottom of the boat. Got in the water and moved the boat off the shale and floats to an island (more like a whale) and tied off. Tow back to wahweep was over $1,500. Tow person was inexperienced on how to handle a big in the wind and when we got close to the marina, has us up against the tire barriers further damaging the gel coat. Talked the the insurance company as the gel coat repair was 7k. They reimbursed us for the gel coat and the tow charges. No luck on the expensive part, rebuilding the motor! Overall, we laugh about it now, but my wife and I also talk about how each of us knew what to do and went to it with little discussion. Boating is making memories, even tough ones.

Thats definitely a memorable trip for you guys. You just feel helpless and accept the situation and choices.

Definitely happy both of us hand a game plan on what to do. Buoys, rope, ore and flag someone down as fast as we could. Our next step was going to grab the anchor, but the boater finally came by. Sometimes you just have to accept what is happening. Thankfully we both have an understanding on what to do and that neither of us are going to sacrifice our bodies to save the boat. We have people in our boat that will stick their arms out around docks. I always tell them we have it, but let it hit if it does because it’s not worth your arm. We rarely ever move at speed docking so damage won’t happened, but we aren’t going to risk injury for something money can repair.

Thanks guys. Going to head back and sit on the beach and enjoy the rest of the day.

Just dropped it off at absolute and they are going to put it in the yard later today. Super nice people.
We have had trips like this. Battle after battle we would just pull the boat out and enjoy the beach. Then after a while your just happy to be there.

Like all have said the boat can be repaired and you will never know anything happened.

Now this comment is constructive and mostly because we boat parker. Keep a box anchor with 50 feet of line. Toss that thing in and then wave that red ski flag at boats until someone stops. I have broken drives, blown up engines in my flat, all the stupid stuff. The Anchor bizz just keeps you off the rocks so you dont have to fight the current trying to pull a save and end up injured yourself.

I am happy someone helped quickly however sometimes you have to sit tight a bit. Just a thought.

That’s exactly what we were talking about we should have done first. We had about 1 minute until we hit the rocks with how the current and the wind were going. We first grabbed the starting fluid trying to get it started again and then Buoys. Next time will be the anchor for sure.

Very sorry to hear about the incident with your boat. Glad everyone is OK. I agree with OCM, get on anchor first. Sounds like Robert did all he could and when the time came, he did the right thing and got back into the boat. Everyone is safe. Enjoy your Birthday/Anniversary weekend.

When I was going through the 'growing pains' of my Raylar kit, I pitched an anchor more than once. First thing I did. Works wonders, but I can see getting so busy concentrating on resolving the mechanical issue that it slips the mind.

Yes, my dad’s house is in havasu. Robert’s (husband) mom’s house is on the needles river. Spoiled for sure.

I think @Bigbore500r is a few homes up from us.
Wow, just read all this. Yes, we are right up river from you, last row of houses before Needles Marina.
Sorry to hear about the damage! A good Gel guy can take care of all that no problem. The prices vary wildly, but I don’t see anywhere near 15k in those photos.
I can’t remember who the go-to guy was in Havasu that was posted a while back but Saleem comes to mind. @RiverDave who’s the best bet for keel repairs and bottom gel work these days?

Glad you guys didn't get hurt. There was a lot of current yesterday going north. And it was blowing hard too.

We will be visiting Pedro at Saleen later this year as well. While docking at the Windsor courtesy dock, I wasn't paying enough attention to the wind and it caught me. As I backed up I caught the metal piece at the ends of those docks and took a chunk out of the stern. Pedro will get it all fixed, but I figure he will have to do some blending. They do a great job there.

While it's normal to feel upset, it's just a boat and some dings that are easily repairable. Don't let it live in you head and don't be the miserable person that agonizes over every little thing.

This almost happened to me in my Warlock when I lost my ECM outside of Steamboat. Wind was ripping, i popped the hatch and then something in my head said grab that anchor NOW. I was 30 seconds away from it being too late.

Took an an hour and 45 mins to tow back to Marina. Me and my buddy slept the whole way back from exhaustion . We still talk about it.

I fight this all the time. I really think I just need to smoke some weed or microdose some shrooms or something. Reset my head.

Anxiety is a bitch!

Pedro took care of some keel scrapes/gouges on our Hallett 210. I can recommend his great work.

I will be finding out later today about the estimate and the time table we are looking at from the absolute gel coat guy. I’m not sure who they use?? but Robert says he trusts Aaron and Sheryll. Will be calling Pedro depending on the next conversation we have. We wanted the keel to be done in the winter and the swim step, but not sure if we should just do it now. It really just depends on what time table we are looking at. So those decisions will be made today/tomorrow.

My dad is going to be on another family members boat for memorial weekend. His boat is available for us. So the marlin will be coming out to play. I doubt the Howard will be ready by then. My dad only used the boat once last year, so the only thing we would probably need to do is the impeller. Really don’t want to roll the dice again in the same stretch of the river haha. So, we will still be out there with all the crazies on memorial weekend:)

So sorry to read all that has happened recently. I hope that you are all fixed up and back on the water quickly!!! Such a bummer but it is really helpful to hear the challenges that others have. Just like @gqchris quick thinking with the anchor. I have to put this into the old memory bank. I can only imagine how it would go down for us. I think that we’d be much worse off than you all are right now. 👍

Some of my best river memories have involved "unplanned" stops. Maybe not rocks, but emergency beaching definitely. Last run up river with Mom, was taking serious water...under throttle only. Leap frogged from beach to beach...bilge pumping like a fountain at every stop. Mom never knew, wife found out later. Apparently the cooling Tee from the pump corroded  Spewing water under the pan. Oh well, just another adventure.

Shake down trips are an adventure...especially when they weren't planned as such. At least no one got too banged up on the rocks. Those F'rs hurt...have some scars from the rocks opposite Moabi🤣

No shrooms buddy unless you want to jump off you boat into outer fucking space.

When I was in High School back in the early 80's a bunch of us Football players partook. I remember standing on the stairs of this house the party was at, looking down to nothing and all the party goers just walking around on nothing. I was a 225lb football lineman clinging to the stair railing arguing with myself about reality.

Never again. One and Done. o_O

Yea its a whole new game these days. I remember a kid in highschool that took them and never recovered.

Im not on top of it, but there have been some huge advancements on taking them in small levels and changing thought patterns, behaviors etc.

I would love to unlock "daily gratitude" and "happy with what I have".

I understand all that is possible and you can do this within the comfort of a spirt guide who will be present for the journey. This is not a joke either.

Forget all that. Some fresh squeezed lemons into ice cold water and two shots of crown and I like everything. 😁

We are about $3300 in with the gel coat repair. It needs to be fixed before it’s back out on the water. We will do the keel later on.

As far as the engine, no news yet. Will have news in a few days. They are slammed. But, we are hopeful that it is minor.

It’s looking promising to have the boat back soon as long as it’s minor issue.
