Do you think any of this is needed for recreational use and modest speed prerunning SCORE courses with a driver that tries to make parts live instead of kill shit?
No, not really. Front diffs have an issue with the ring gear bolts backing off, which eventually causes the ring gear to break the bolts and spin on the diff carrier. Some guys weld them, but then it's a pain or impossible to grind the welds off to remove the bolts for service. I got crafty and figured out how to use safety wire bolts with a bit of machine work.

If you dont drive it like a TT you will be fine IMO, the Wells had over 4000 miles on their pro r prerunner and no issues that I know of. I have 1200 on mine no issues so far, my brother (doesnt drive it nice) has about 500 miles on his so far and no issues......as soon as you put a race number that might be different like RGs cars haha. Go drive it and have fun.

Answer: Gears break when they aren't heat treated properly, or not to spec, or with improper material. I have not seen the heat treat spec sheet on these, nor have I seen the broken gears back here yet (should see them this week), so I cannot say what the exact issue is just yet.

The gears in these Speed UTV's are twice the size of any other UTV gearbox on the market. There was no reason for them to break or wear out with the amount of miles and use they have on them. The highest mileage gearbox I have seen from them had about 6000 miles on it, and the gears looked great.

Load these up against the rocks and stand on the gas trying to get over something, you find the weak links pretty quick.
100% my thought too. Gears typically don’t break like that unless another problem. They do wear out and then can break.

They will destroy rear axles and CV joints. Too much power, tire size, and speed to keep those CV joints together. I helped replace RJ Andersons rear axles after the first lap of the Thursday race.

Front diffs will fall apart from the factory unless properly prepped. Wet clutch in trans that drives the front diff will wear down and lose it's preload, then spin without driving the front diff. I just prepped (4) sets of Pro-R drivetrain before the hammers.
We broke a rear axle on sierras pro R on sundays desert race. This was the first one we have broke, we also remove the stock cv grease and replace with belray/neo mix and vent the boots. We also take the front diffs out of the box new and check torque and tack weld the bolts so they don’t continue to come loose as they have previously. As far as the PTL we replace every single race to avoid any issues driving the front diff.

Years ago we tried different heat treats on the rear end gears on my Class 8 truck (in addition to the normal race prep, debur etc.)
The Pro gears for drag racing were too soft and would wear too fast, the street gears were too hard and would chip.
A rockwell between the two turned out to be the cats meow. This was years before the big 10" gears were available for the 9".
I don't recall where they were heat treated but Mark Williams was helping and also had a spool we could not break.
Anyway I'm sure the guys at Weddle, RG etc will get this nailed.

I think people just assume gear heat treatment is some simple blanket process that works in all applications. Like you know from experience it's much more nuanced, especially when you get into case hardening. It takes time and real world testing to get the combination just right. Everything we know about gear shape, clearance, thermal expansion, material, and conditioning just gives you a starting point, not a finished solution.

Randy, you need to come talk to me at the Mint. I know you guys get a racer deal from Polaris, but there is no reason to keep replacing those parts if they are properly prepped and maintained up front. A conversation doesn't cost anything, unless you want to bring me a beer!

If we only got a discount on parts it would make sence to make them last longer or reuse them. since We get full factory support and parts it makes more sence to replace them on the regular basis as we do. Let’s talk for sure if Theres ways to make stronger then I’m always down 👍 thanks Sean

So I heard the rumor people are not taking cars home this weekend again from a different person this time. It's just a ride and speed keeps the cars till new trans are in. Anyone in the first 10 on this site getting a car this weekend can confirm?

You the same guy harassed ky0tyk and his family when he put up one of the best build threads @ RDP. You were negative the whole way thru their bus converted to RV project. Turned out awesome
Just like Speed gonna be a awesome SXS.

I gotta laugh,,,,$15 for a burrito and a chance to see RG and the cars
Am I the only one that thinks it would be good business to offer free tacos?
Looks like a catering joint. I wouldn’t mind paying for the burrito. If you don’t feel like it eat before. I don’t think free food is standing between RG and sales.

You must not be familiar with Minor’s Diner, great food and prices are not far off from any other food wagon, she usually has her own menu but catered to change the menu as an opportunity to serve at Speeds shop rather than another truck perhaps. I’ll buy and support a good local business, has nothing to do with Robby.

I'm willing to wait as long as it takes them to release a perfect burrito vs getting a free one now with multiple stop-eats.

Come on let’s keep this on topic with just facts and information!

So does anyone know where the beef for the tacos is being assembled?
I heard they shipped a bunch of dogs back from China they were going to eat them over there anyways so they gave them back to us to make tacos

Lighten up Francis...

Everyone is Finally having some fun. It's a nice change of pace for this place!

🤣
You are correct. In most situations the threads & comments regarding Ford,Chevrolet,GMC,Toyota,or Polaris,Can Am etc not personal just the product.Usually alotta laughs over the years. In these threads regarding Speed UTV seems personal towards RG . Not sure why that is.
