I saw a post earlier about a curiosity of retiring. Well, after 33 years with Caltrans today was my first day being retired.
Was planning on going early September. I had an appointment scheduled for yesterday. Asked dude at Calpers helping us if I could just go now. He said “you can go whenever you want”. Looked at the wife and said let’s make it now. She didn’t argue. 🤘

According to wifey we’re moving to New Hampshire because of our one and probably only grand baby. ☺️

Congrats . My last day was last Oct. 10. It's all great but after 50 years working there is an adjustment period. I think I've almost got the rhythm down now . maybe just a little farther to go.

That is great. I know that we’d most likely try to find a way to be near grandchildren if there were a few. Right now we are enjoying the friend of our with grand kids. Hopefully one day our son figures out how kids are made. He is only 27……

Ours son is 36 now. Grand baby is 8 months so the boy was 35 when baby was born.
From early 20’s to early 30’s me and wifey were dreading him getting someone pregnant without being in a relationship.
Thank god he found the right one to procreate with. ☺️

It’s refreshing to hear that there is a different place to retire……. Other than Florida! Lol

I truly live in retirement land. You guys know what Florida‘s nickname is…… Gods Waiting Room

I only learned this fact when I moved here……. Do you guys know what a Florida Q-Tip is? I laughed my ass off when I heard this. This is the derogatory slang term that young people call the people with Gray Hair. Q-tips

Napanut…… I am happy for you. You now have a lot of fun decisions ahead. Enjoy

I retired last month. June 2 was my last day. June 3 we left for two weeks that would include white water rafting with my wife's best friend and her family. Merced river rapids dumped us twice, and through sheer luck didn't get pretty hurt. We had the boat overloaded most likely and Shannon isn't quite as good of a "guide" as she thought she was.
Then we drove the back roads to Calistoga through some cool places like https://friendsofcolumbiashp.com/
Checked out the geyser, had some amazing food, super quiet campsite, hung out at an amazing private resort with a topless pool. After a few days we left for Santa Cruz, then up to Redding/Lakehead where we had been ordered to clear dead trees and brush on some property we own on Lake Shasta. Then back down the same way we had come up, and camped at Carmel, Cambria, Avila Beach, and finally back home.
2 days later we were camping in Big Bear.
This month we have been to Palm Springs, Big Bear, and back to Pismo.
We had another trip planned but when we got back from Pismo day before yesterday, our neighbors have removed a bunch of landscaping that we didn't want removed. It has removed a lot of the appeal and privacy of our house, and so it seems we have to prepare for some degree of "war".

My last year working was the hardest of the entire 30. I was completely unprepared for how my job changed in the last year and a half. My wife busted her ass to make shit at home go smoothly so that I could focus on my job. Now she is busting her ass to make sure we make the most of our "second childhood" as she calls it.

Congrats
I took a State position after working 29 years in my profession (5 as employee, 5 as business owner, 20+- self employed). It's post-pension reform, but it will be nice to retire with a little sumtin sumtin.

I'm 5-years in and will go another 10...I love it! They tell me what to do it, I do it, then I go home without worry.

It's never too late, one time I read on CalPers the average State hire is in their 40's

That’s one of my concerns when I retire in 5 years. I have been working since I was 17 years old. After 50 years it’s a hard cycle to break.

Happy retirement! 🌞 It first feels like you're on vacation, then that 5 page honey-do list you've put off for 33 yrs looms large😂 .....enjoy retirement😊
But most of all, spoil the grandkids.🙂

Congratulations Brian! Long time to put up with the state mess. I am only 14 year into it. Got a long way to go.

Those that are looking at it, there are pros and cons to working in the public sector. As Brian can attest, the sheer amount of stupidity coming at you is one of the biggest challenges.
