This is an unbelievably monumental achievement. the ramifications are massive

Their plan is to be able to turn these boosters around and be able to launch another starship within an hour of landing. They plan to have a handful of boosters that continually service up to 1,000 starship upper stages. The boosters can launch and land within that 15 minute timeframe, but the upper stage takes several orbits of earth to re-align with the texas base for landing.

So you need lots of upper stages to match just a few boosters for continual launches.

One day you might even be able to do Texas to Australia on a Starship, about a 45 minute flight as opposed to 14 hours on a 777. Unreal stuff.

I too was blown away by this event. I remember being a boy of 12 or so when Armstrong stepped off the LEM and onto the surface of the moon.
From that day forth I have been a follower of this kinda stuff, and aviation.
Seeing that 250 ft rocket return and slip into the launch structure was unreal. My wife and I watched it several times. In my opinion this should be a lead story in every newscast and teachers should be running it in classrooms.
I am with those who think this is a game changer for spaceflight.

Not missing anything.

SpaceX will state their goal for number of launches the next year. I have zero idea of what that number is for Starship, we don’t make any parts for it. Let’s say it’s 10 for arguments sake. Reusing the booster would likely not increase that number, it just makes the cost per launch much cheaper for SpaceX.

You’re equating a cost savings into building more rockets. Will this decrease in cost trickle down to the customers and in turn increase the number of launches? Maybe, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Will there be an increase over time in Starship launches and rockets built? Of course. Will that number be different based on reusing the booster? Probably not but it will cost SpaceX less every time they launch.

It is badass that he pulled this off but at the end of the day it’s process improvement. Which reduces the cost per launch to SpaceX. That does not automatically equate to a reduction in cost to the end user. That’s why I’m saying when you get to end of life of this generation of rocket will the number of launches/rockets built be higher because reusing the booster? Again, probably not.

Competition is what will reduce cost to the end user and increase launches. Blue Origin was supposed to launch in 2024, they missed it. They should be launching early 2025. Bezos is also building his version of Starlink. I’m excited to see the pissing match between Elon and Bezos! Relativity Space had their test launch in 2024, delayed 2 years cause they weren’t ready. If they pull off their goal on manufacturing time to produce a rocket they will be the Wal-Mart of launching satellites. When end users have choices the cost to them will go down.
