..their first real RC car?

LOF's "cool gifts" thread and all the RC talk, made me go dig this out. My first real RC car that didnt have a cord attached. Got it for Christmas when I was probably 8 or 9yo. I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade. This is probably the first time it's been out of the box in 30yrs🤣🤣 ive had a bunch of nitro cars and a few battery cars since. But this is the only one I ever kept! gonna go get some batteries and see if it still works! The cats will love it😜

All mine were Jerobee brand, powered by cox .049 engines... none left, I have no idea what happened to them. We raced them at the Tanforan Mall in San Bruno on Sunday mornings with a track outlined by 2x4's connected with door hinges. The winner bought lunch at McDonalds.

They took all my paper route money delivering the San Francisco Chronicle in the early 70's, Plus working Saturdays at Pat's house of Hobbies in the Mission District to pay for them.

No battery powered cars back then, just model engine fueled ones.

Here is a write up:

Didn't have cars as a kid but my Dad flew planes and my brother and I got to mess around with them a little bit. He did have that red car that you put on a string and nail it down to the pavement and let it run around at about 300MPH until it ran out of fuel.
After the wife and I got married we were looking for something to do in the winter as it got dark so early and wound up running those RC cars, I think Losi's and some other one. We seemed to get in it pretty good so I bought a whole ficking big package from a guy that was a very good racer that wanted to get out of the sport. SHIT TONS of cars and parts. I decided to let the wife drive, better hand to eye than me, and I just kept them all running, you know, the mechanic thing. We did well in those industrial building tracks in Riverside.

I don't have my old stuff anymore, I had an old metal chasis RC10, and some misc radio shack and tamiya stuff too that made it to the landfill.

A few years ago my buddy pulled a box out and wanted to give me his Tamiya Frog, and Blackfoot. I told him let's put that shit on eBay. The frog got like 40 bucks, the Blackfoot pulled probably 60 bucks (it was broken). He never put the sticker kit of the Blackfoot on the truck and it was still in the packaging, the sticker kit sold for over $100.

I wish instill had my first, it was a team associated rc10t. My little brother has the Traxxas rustler I gave him 20 years ago sitting at my dad's. I think I still have an HPI rs4 and a gas Traxxas stampede in a cabinet somewhere.

Funniest car I ever owned was a bolink digger, you couldn't break that thing.

Still have my JRXT. Last time I went into Pegasus to buy some parts, they were like...

WTF? You still have that thing??

Yep. And every accessory too. 👍🏼

I have a JRX2 and a LXT truck. I have a feeling I’ll be getting them down out of the garage soon here. The LXT is pretty rad.. and when I was racing that 25 years ago it was “old”. It has a bunch of exotic stuff for the time on it.

The vintage stuff is starting to be worth some $$

Mine was about a 1981 or so Toyota Hilux, 2WD with huge balloon tires like what was on early 3 wheelers. It was blue stock but I put a custom paint job on it. After that it was a gold pan RC-10.

My friend had a Baja Bandit by Tyco, I was insanely jealous because for some reason my parents wouldn't get me one.

FIrst real car was a RC10T2, I put everything I made into that truck until the phase passed and it got shelved. I gave it to my daughter's older brother around 2015, along with a bunch of spare parts and tools. He never did anything with it, I probably should have kept it and saved it for antique value in the future, lol.

80s to mid/late 90s. Losi owned the track, and their headquarters were over that way when they started out. I spent a TON of time at that track in the mid 90s.

Not my first one, but I have a Tamiya Hilux sitting in my garage from 1988 or so. It was a lot of fun, but I havent run it in probably 10 years.

One of my brothers and I went through a bunch of RC cars im the 80s. We had a Wild Willy jeep in 1985 or so, a Grasshopper, a Frog, and a few others that I forget the names of.

I remember saving my $$ to buy a black motor to go faster

I had an OG RC 10 with the gold tub chassis that I got from the old place in costa mesa in the 80's I I think is was called RCH ? Radio Controlled hobbies ? I think my FIL still has the car in his shop with the old Futaba box transmitter.

Later in the mid 90's got a Losi XX and XXT and used to race at So Cal Raceway when they were in Garden Grove. Would also race at M&M in Corona. Later raced at so cal when they moved to HB and had a team Associated B4 and T4. Used to play around a little at OCRC but never got into racing again.

Racing was fun, I often think it would fun to do it again but need to manage my addictions : )

Before radio control cars we had these things made by Cox. The control line got boring so we cut the cord and let her race down the street on her own...

Cox had an airplane on a tether. Memories of elders becoming dizzy or wrapping it around a tree were the only outcome.

I think you are right, RC Hobbies or something like that. That's where my Dad got my Hilux and gold pan RC-10. My cousin had a Grasshopper and it was fun too.

Any of you guys ever race at The Ranch Pit Shop back in the day on Mission Ave in Pomona?
Never raced there but played around on the track a few times. We used to drive up there for Losi parts when our track or hobby store didn't have them.

Stock truck a lot. Some stock buggy, very little of that. 4wd modified buggy a little bit too.

Later on stock touring car and nitro touring car too. Also nitro truck and 1/8 nitro buggy. All I do now is 1/8 nitro buggy.

I had a lot of fun with my Team Associated buggy and Futaba radio. It was fun back in the day to build a car... Now kids just go online and buy a RTR kit, can't blame them.

I have an RC10 Championship Edition....it's somewhere on a shelf. Dusted it off a few years ago and noticed the output flanges were about worn through and it needed some love. AE had re-listed the entire parts catalog for this thing on their website and was going to have stock in a few months, so I signed up for updates and never recieved any, so back on the shelf it went, somewhere.

Kid has a traxxas and I put together some stadium truck thing with a completely stupid brushless deal running on a pair of 4C lipos that does about 80 before it blows over...it was fun for a week or so but I couldn't keep tires on it. I eventually crashed it into something at speed and had to sweep up the pieces lol.

There's a group that meets out at one of the local airports that does control line airplanes. They do races and dog fighting, it's pretty fun to watch.

That's what my Dad had but it was in the early 60's. If I remember right it was a bit bigger and was fire engine red. That SOB would scream around in circles.

National RC championships coming up here in Mesa - anyone fly here?

6349dfd955251.image.png

From Oct. 20-23, the club will host the 41st annual U.S. Scale Masters Association National Championships that will draw more than 50 pilots from around the country and more than 400 spectators per day.

The Scale Masters competition venue changes every year and last came to Mesa in 2002.

“It’s actually the largest event that we’ll be having this year,” Dickey said. “It’s a very big event for us.”

Model aviation has several disciplines, with this event focusing on scale flying and each aircraft’s resemblance to an existing full-scale plane, including World War I biplanes, World War II P-51 Mustangs and fighter jets flown in Korea and Vietnam.

Dang. Blast from the past. I spent a ton of time at M&M Hobbies. Even at their old location before they moved off of Green River. Brian Kinwald was always there. I always ran Losi trucks.

My buddy brought over a broken grasshopper and a black foot. I put them on eBay for him. They both brought in pretty decent money. What I did do was list the original Blackfoot graphics as they were new in the package. I think I got almost $100 for them.

I don't have my OG RC cars, had a losi XXCR buggy and a team associated stadium truck, the truck was a little newer so it had an aluminum pan, but not gold.

I still have my first plane, my grandpa built it before I existed, and it was given to me when we started flying together. Now it just hangs from the ceiling in my garage.

Damn you guys brining up fun times. Ran all these racing stock buggy and truck touring the NORRCA points series races including up in Bakersfield and my home track in Camarillo.

Managing addictions is correct. Got into dirt oval a few years ago racing Hot Rod and Bakersfield RC but had to stop to be able to support the boys baseball time requirements.

My first RC car was 45 years ago, piece of shit Corvette that would go forward or turn one direction in reverse :D

My first "real" and favorite of all the RC shit I've owned over the years is this Traxxas Bigfoot

Bigfoot Traxxas.jpg

I recently got this Axial Bronco Crawler, it's a lot of fun, unbelievable the shit you can climb and go over with it! I painted it Ford factory Cyber Orange with automotive paint and put different tires and wheels along with brass differential covers and wheel weights to lower the CG

bronco crawler 01.jpg

it looked like this when I bought it
