Just finished up my yearly check for skin cancer.

Got the all clear :)

Now it's your turn. Go get checked. As boaters and sun worshipers, we are more likely to get it than most.

Ive had it twice on my ear, had plastic surgery both times to remove it, now I have some stuff on the cheek. Will be going in after I get my dental implant next week. Shit, I sound old.:(

I have been fortunate enough to have not had any issues yet, but as a fair-haired and fair-skinned chick that basically lives in the Sun every moment that I can, I'm not oblivious to the risk. My mom has had some stuff cut out of her, and I want to avoid that if I can. Brutal :(

I just had something cut off my nose last week. It was cancer. They said they got it all. I get check ups every 3 months.

It's really simple to put on the sunscreen, wear a hat, maybe put up the bimini even though it looks better down and by the time you remember to do it, you've already exposed yourself to damage.

Ok, so, probably a dumb question. Considering the fact I don't even have a regular doctor, I just go to urgent care when I need something. Where would I go to get this checked? Dermatologist I'm guessing? If anyone has a recommendation for one in San Diego that would be great.

Being blonde and fair skinned as well I'm probably over do, especially since I know my dad has had numerous spots carved out over the years, but he lives out of state. :hmm

Can't remember who it was but early last summer somebody here at RDP mentioned that they were wearing the UV swimwear and had their entire family using it. I though that was good information and since then I've been building up a wardrobe for the little lady and myself of UV swimwear.
Even big 5 is stocking some decent looking long and short sleeve shirts, shorts, etc.
I like it! Works pretty damn good!

I'm tired of burning up the skin. Just not into it anymore.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to get this done too. Lived a lot of my life in the sun.

I wear a hat and those fancy REI sunblock shirts at the river anymore now.

Fuck cancer. 👎

Good for you Mel.

It is amazing the improvement in cancer we have achieved just with early detection, let alone the treatments. (I saw Dawson today for the first time since he got home, still blows my mind.)
When I was a boy cancer killed a whole lot more people than it does now. Makes me wonder what my grandkids will see come down the line.

With the way I tend to forget sunscreen and burn I really should get checked. Unfortunately I don't have medical at the moment.

To be honest I never wear sun screen or get checked.

Maybe it's my pacific islander skin but I rarely get burnt.

I ALWAYS wear sunscreen, a hat and sun protective clothing when outside. I've only been outside with my shirt off twice in the last 6 years and that was only for a minute. As most of you know I'm a melanoma survivor and I take it pretty seriously. I had a tube sewn into my chest for a month because of it. Let me tell you it sucked. If that isn't enough to scare you into getting checked, let me post some pics of the chemo treatment on my face.

My wife had Melanoma at 23 years old (10 years ago).

It was just a little mole and once she got pregnant it tripled in size, like overnight. They think the hormones accelerated it.

Went to the doctor just to get checked and within 18 hours she was in full blown surgery getting hacked up and taking lymph nodes.

It is no joke and she was very lucky. She gets checked every few months now and it's a nerve racking experience every time but better safe than sorry.

Great post, DB [emoji106]

That's awesome to hear. I had a very similar situation. I spent Christmas Eve 2009 in surgery. They took out 9 lymph nodes.

Here's were they put a radiation dye into the site and follow which lymph nodes it goes to.

Honestly, we didn't know any better. We were just two kids ourselves barely married 4 years. We were still in Honeymoon phase lol.

We actually laughed at the dermatologist when he told us that we had to get to UC Irvine immediately, they were waiting for us.

Let me tell ya, they aren't gentle and discreet about getting it out. Her scars look like they used a spoon. If anyone is worried about some little scars getting them taken off early you sure as hell don't want to see what they do when it's too late.

It wasn't until the surgeon explained the totality of the situation that it had sunk in. Scary how quick it can happen.

I just had a basil cell cut off my forearm and then treated face and arms with Efudex cream , which pulls out precancerous cells out of skin. I looked like I had lepresy for a couple weeks , but a small price to pay. All this stuff is from 20-30 yrs ago at Newport in the sun with baby oil.
Be careful out there.

Twice a year for me. I've already had too many things cut off. I recently lost a very good friend to melanoma, and it killed my Dad when I was two.

One more thing I wanted to post on this. This is melanoma. It's a crappy picture because when I took it I didn't think it was a big deal. The mole itself is only the size of an eraser tip on a pencil. Melanoma can present itself in many different colors and shapes. The only reason I got it checked was because I didn't remember it being there.

Doesn't look that scary but it could of taken me out. Get checked.

Last year a friend of mine who works for a dermatologist office had a free skin cancer clinic one day. Right off the top of my head I can't remember who or where [emoji854], but I'll make it my mission to find out for you, find any free clinics this year, or give you the name of my Derm who is in C-bad. [emoji12] stay tuned....

X2 on the three month check ups and do Flurorouracil Cream twice a year on my face and arms. Scheduled for my next Mohs surgery next Tuesday. Last year was the worst I've yet 5 Mohs procedures in 11 months. I don't get in the sun these days without suncreen.

At what age did you all start getting checked regularly? I used to get FRIED when i was a kid..always swimming in the water at the river or beach. Nowadays i wear a hat 100% of the time at the river and plenty of sunscreen. Just not sure when these things start becoming more detectable and noticeable.

I started around 40... but I think early detection is key, so NOW is a good time. :)
