So now that my divorce process is coming to a close (looks like it will all be complete late next week), I would like to explore adding a side job, or a side hustle as the kids say that I can do on my down time to put a little extra coin in my pocket. I'd really like it to be something that has little to now monetary initial cost since I really don't have much of any of that to front at the moment. Anybody have any ideas?

I think my Escalade is too old to do the Uber thing (2009) and it really doesn't make financial sense to use it for delivery services due to the shit fuel economy.

The income potential doing HVAC is going to be significantly higher than gig work like Uber and the like. Can you find the tools you need on craigslist or OfferUp in order to get started? Can you work any OT at your main job for a few months until you save up enough to purchase some of your own tools? Maybe offer to cover some weekend or night shift emergency coverage if any is available.

The guys I know in the trades that have a side hustle make as much or more doing side jobs evenings and weekends as they do at their main jobs- and it’s all cash.

My buddy works for a solar installation company as an installer...he just started his side hustle of cleaning solar panels, says its been doing pretty well and keeping him busy...he just carries whatever cleaning products he needs, plus a big mop/brush type thing, and a long hose....uses the customers water...

Not many connections with small companies in the area. I did offer that to one friend and that was a non-starter for him.

What about a second job at another HVAC company? Not sure how union rules would come into play there.

My main job is salaried during the week but I have 2 PRN jobs on the weekends that keep me busy and provide extra income to fund my hobbies and provide an emergency fund for day to day stuff. I also pick up at my other jobs during holidays when I have the day off.

Can you work out of your Escalade for a year or so until you save up enough to purchase a cheap Ranger or the like to use for side jobs?

A lot of people hate working weekends or taking call after hours, I’d try stopping by some local HVAC shops with a Resume and speak to the owner/ manager to see if they have anything available part-time.

Or inquire at your current company and see if that’s something they could accommodate.

Sell/trade whatever your daily driver is now and get a truck.....

My life long AC guy has worked out of a regular old pickup truck for decades, you don't need a fancy truck to do AC work....

Hell you could do it out of a station wagon.

I have 4 kids. Truck choice is extremely limited and the Escalade (suburban size) is still owed on and not worth much more than I owe. I have to use all 3 rows for my kids when I have them so I'm VERY hesitant to putting much in the back that would or could interfere with having places for them all to sit safely.

Work the hell outta your network, and remember that RDP is part of that network. Many shops would love to find a reliable experienced tech that is willing to work part time, it saves them money over paying OT and Bennie’s to their guys. Both of my PRN jobs were positions that didn’t exist but were created for me because I was able to leverage my network.

You can always take your tools and stuff out of your SUV when it’s on family duty, or build secure storage to keep stuff from rolling around.

The biggest thing is attitude, don’t focus on the obstacles- focus on finding solutions and get out there and make some money.

That isnt an issue. Its the ladders and larger items that I am more concerned about.

If you really want a side gig, you'll figure it out without any excuses. Get a little trailer for your tools/ladders etc. Call some HVAC companies and pick up some shifts off hours. Dont make up some artificial barriers to entry.

My Dad had a side HVAC gig for a decade, after work and weekends. He did mini splits mostly, and also did Rinnai tankless hot water heaters. He stayed hella busy, turned down more work than he took.

He did all of it out of a 2004 Jeep TJ and a small 4x6 trailer that he occasionally needed. Your escalade ESV has way more room than his TJ, even with the 3rd row seat in kid mode (I know...I have an esv too). 90% of the time didnt use the trailer at all. A few times when he ended up needing a trailer to haul an hvac unit or what not, he went and rented one from home depot for like 35$. He used all Ryobi tools so that if he left one in an attic somewhere, he could replace it cheap (although he never actually lost one). Had a stanley rolling tool box that came apart in 3 pieces and fit in the back of the jeep with the seat folded up.

He made dang good side money. Zero advertising, just word of mouth and a good personality. Zero overhead.
