So now that my divorce process is coming to a close (looks like it will all be complete late next week), I would like to explore adding a side job, or a side hustle as the kids say that I can do on my down time to put a little extra coin in my pocket. I'd really like it to be something that has little to now monetary initial cost since I really don't have much of any of that to front at the moment. Anybody have any ideas?

I think my Escalade is too old to do the Uber thing (2009) and it really doesn't make financial sense to use it for delivery services due to the shit fuel economy.

Hard to do not having my own truck.
The income potential doing HVAC is going to be significantly higher than gig work like Uber and the like. Can you find the tools you need on craigslist or OfferUp in order to get started? Can you work any OT at your main job for a few months until you save up enough to purchase some of your own tools? Maybe offer to cover some weekend or night shift emergency coverage if any is available.

The guys I know in the trades that have a side hustle make as much or more doing side jobs evenings and weekends as they do at their main jobs- and it’s all cash.

Home Depot and other vendors use the Roadie app to deliver stuff, I've had all sorts of people show up at the gate. Cars, trucks, young, old, men, women, you name it.

Could be good for some side coin on the weekends.

How about mini split installs?

Do you have a monthly income number you’d like to achieve?
Again, comes down to the lack of having a truck.

Don't really have a number in mind. Just want to get out of debt sooner now that the largest debt creator is no longer my responsibility.

I'm a salaried employee at a Union company. No OT options available.

If I had a truck, HVAC side work would be my go to since I know that business pretty damn well.

My buddy works for a solar installation company as an installer...he just started his side hustle of cleaning solar panels, says its been doing pretty well and keeping him busy...he just carries whatever cleaning products he needs, plus a big mop/brush type thing, and a long hose....uses the customers water...

If you have a network in the HVAC community I'd imagine there are a few guys that would love to have you on board on the weekends or late nights handling calls so they can take some weekends/evenings off.

Not many connections with small companies in the area. I did offer that to one friend and that was a non-starter for him.

What about a second job at another HVAC company? Not sure how union rules would come into play there.

My main job is salaried during the week but I have 2 PRN jobs on the weekends that keep me busy and provide extra income to fund my hobbies and provide an emergency fund for day to day stuff. I also pick up at my other jobs during holidays when I have the day off.

Can you work out of your Escalade for a year or so until you save up enough to purchase a cheap Ranger or the like to use for side jobs?

A lot of people hate working weekends or taking call after hours, I’d try stopping by some local HVAC shops with a Resume and speak to the owner/ manager to see if they have anything available part-time.

Or inquire at your current company and see if that’s something they could accommodate.

I was going to say doing an HVAC side hustle may cause a conflict with your employeer but I dont think a union shop would care.

I know @Hammer is doing well and was once in your position

Your friend was smart. If you go into business with friends you end up not being friends. I know a ton of people with that story

Handyman. Weekends only.

There are apps you can sign up on.

My friend in SD gets stuff done around her house all the time this way.
What are these apps? I can do a lot of handyman type stuff pretty easily.

Sell/trade whatever your daily driver is now and get a truck.....

My life long AC guy has worked out of a regular old pickup truck for decades, you don't need a fancy truck to do AC work....

Hell you could do it out of a station wagon.

I have 4 kids. Truck choice is extremely limited and the Escalade (suburban size) is still owed on and not worth much more than I owe. I have to use all 3 rows for my kids when I have them so I'm VERY hesitant to putting much in the back that would or could interfere with having places for them all to sit safely.

You're telling us you can't throw a couple tool bags in the back, or fold one of the rows down a couple days a week to go do side work?

Work the hell outta your network, and remember that RDP is part of that network. Many shops would love to find a reliable experienced tech that is willing to work part time, it saves them money over paying OT and Bennie’s to their guys. Both of my PRN jobs were positions that didn’t exist but were created for me because I was able to leverage my network.

You can always take your tools and stuff out of your SUV when it’s on family duty, or build secure storage to keep stuff from rolling around.

The biggest thing is attitude, don’t focus on the obstacles- focus on finding solutions and get out there and make some money.

You don’t need a truck. Maybe a small trailer occasionally.

That isnt an issue. Its the ladders and larger items that I am more concerned about.

Easier to do when referred by a mutual friend or connection though. Not even too sure where to start that.

@Riverbound you want a Monday and Tuesday evening/everyother weekend tech out of the Burbank area? lol!

I umpire on the side for extra cash. Couple hundred a week depending on how many games I feel like working. It’s not a bad gig

Maybe slide in on the Eurpoean Maifia and sign up to do home warranty HVAC work. You can turn that stuff on and off as you need and a few of them pay pretty good and fast.

If you really want a side gig, you'll figure it out without any excuses. Get a little trailer for your tools/ladders etc. Call some HVAC companies and pick up some shifts off hours. Dont make up some artificial barriers to entry.

My Dad had a side HVAC gig for a decade, after work and weekends. He did mini splits mostly, and also did Rinnai tankless hot water heaters. He stayed hella busy, turned down more work than he took.

He did all of it out of a 2004 Jeep TJ and a small 4x6 trailer that he occasionally needed. Your escalade ESV has way more room than his TJ, even with the 3rd row seat in kid mode (I know...I have an esv too). 90% of the time didnt use the trailer at all. A few times when he ended up needing a trailer to haul an hvac unit or what not, he went and rented one from home depot for like 35$. He used all Ryobi tools so that if he left one in an attic somewhere, he could replace it cheap (although he never actually lost one). Had a stanley rolling tool box that came apart in 3 pieces and fit in the back of the jeep with the seat folded up.

He made dang good side money. Zero advertising, just word of mouth and a good personality. Zero overhead.

Don’t think the idea of him switching companies will be a great option since he would probably have to become a tech again and it sounds like he doesn’t have any on calls. With his family, the hours and schedule would suck

I’ll send you a message.

All the guys I know that work for HVAC companies all do that for there side hustle and make damn good money. I’d stick with what you know and make that profitable. Do whatever it takes to get a truck if you have to. Find an old beater that will get the job done. It will pay for itself quick.

I did night calls/emergency hvac when I was in school. Didn't need a day job. If my stupid ass kept on with that I would have been retired 10 years ago. Worked the tin shop too. Loved making custom duct work.

Window washing service. Low start up costs, mindless work. Get enough accounts to hire some idiots, repeat and scale.
Paint address numbers on curbs.
Pick up Dog Shit
Backflow certification
Buy storage units and sell the shit on Ebay
Build bird houses out of scrap lumber and sell them online or at the farmers market
Grow Micro-greens
Find a used car lot that needs nights and weekends coverage
Start a grocery shopping service
Mobile Oil changing service (for single moms)
Rent a Husband Handy Man service (for single moms)
Pool cleaning service
Mow lawns
Do Amazon reviews ( I know a guy who makes a good amount of money doing this)
Change HVAC Filters (for single moms) This seems easy money.

That took my 3 minutes, I can't imagine you can't figure out how to hustle a buck.

Fold the seat down in the escalade and it's the same as a truck with a shell on it.

Dude the Mexicans can build a god dam hotel using a Toyota Corolla. You can hustle a couple side jobs out of a full size suv.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Damn FL. Taking a beating in here
RDP at its finest. Never holding back on opinions. lol.

I think just getting back on your feet after the whole divorce deal and adjusting would be a priority.
Yaya. I know, we as men. Don’t need to adjust. Just jump right into another squeeze. 🙄😜
