Someone please explain to me what makes these so bad ass.

i mean i get the twin turbo v drive ones i see in parker are cool, and that they have a catalina ski boat race history and handle the chop well.

But other than that seems like they are super expensive, even the old ones, without much innovation over the years. Is this like the teague pixie dust effect?

Again i am SUPER ignorant to these and i am asking bc i am genuinely curious.

I think it would be similar to “what makes a 67-69 muscle car special”.

They will build a boat anyway you want. Including exotic woods in the transom, wood deck vs fiberglass. Pretty much whatever you want.

Doesn't that red spectra have big Red-line power and really nice rigging? Super nice boat.
I am not sure if Redline built it this last time, @obnoxious001 might have built it? I know that they at least tuned it recently. That is the fastest and hardest cornering boat I have ever been in! Scott did a great job building the entire thing from the layup to the rigging, it is bitchen and hauls ass!!!

There are certainly faster boats, but Scott drives the heck out of his. And of course, since you supplied the pistons you do know that I built it.

Deadrise and typically weight, they are a heavy boat. A 21 Nordic 1350 boat will run circles around a Schiada. But then we get back to the classic car comparison.

Really tried avoiding getting into this convo, but here we go.

they are to an extent, but no more than enjoying a classic car.

hull wise, I dont think they're drastically different, it comes down to the rigging and setup. You'll see 21' schiadas in every type of propulsion out there, and they'll all ride and handle differently.

Now this is just my PERSONAL OPINION....

What makes a 18-21' v-drive special is a few things. Rigging, even the most basic v-drive is prob double the hours of a typical stern drive boat rigging time. The engineering is crucial to performance and handling. The materials used in these higher end boats is top notch, they're just as much a show piece as they are a working machine. Pull the center floors on any higher end boat, and you'll be blown away how everything is setup for something that never gets seen. Performance, when properly setup, a the propshaft will drive the boat up and out of water, couple that with manual plates that can be fine tuned on the fly with your left foot and you have an almost infinitely adjustable ride. Stabbing the over ride pedal, getting that forward fin to hook as you turn in hard. I've never been in a boat that turns more violently than my Rayson, Its almost like someone designed the boat to go fast and turn hard.

On top of what others have said they are very good handling and and predictable. They also have classic looks that will never age, as is apparent by them still being sought after 50 years after their debut. They turn well, knock down the water well for their size, and are just a pleasure to drive.

Leonard Schiada and the original crew really hit a home run with the design of the 20, 21,& 22.

Exactly the kind of info/opinion i am looking for. I don't know jack about these type of boats but see some beautiful examples in parker every weekend. Just didn't understand the mechanics of them.

SoCalZero has one of the super good ones that Mike King rigged. I built several turbo engines for it years ago when the Cooks were ski racing with it. I even drove it in a ski race or two, not to mention all the times I drove it in practice including Catalina runs pulling Corey. One particular run I had to drive it through a huge pod of dolphins because we came up on them so quickly, perhaps 70 mph. Of course I lifted the throttle they were able to avoid us. I guess the most memorable practice run was at Bluewater when we still had larger attendance for the ski races, and people would practice on Friday, lining the beach there. We came from the Cook's place upriver, entered the turn pretty well flat out and didn't lift until the boat was to the apex. I got the signal that he was out of the turn, ran the speed right up. With the 55 gear in that boat we figured over 100 mph. That was perhaps mid 1990's and people still talk about that run!

I think a lot of questions would be answered after a ride along. You will be sprinkled with the Schiada pixie dust and you will know why “they just work”. I never had a ride in one until I bought one and I have been a believer ever since.

There are quite a few comments above that are very well put and the design works. Everyone who owns one.... knows and those peeps while they may all have their own lil niche of why they luv em there will be many common similarities besides they are just f in cool AF. For me it's almost a spiritual thing. It took me eight years to build mine way back and it's like a piece of me and when I drive it it's like an extension of my ability. I have had many boats in my 40 years of playing with them and the RC I've had for about 23. 23 years have come and gone along with the other boats in the stable and the RC remains. A year and a half ago ish when i was pondering between my 2950 Lavey and my RC (because I also feel the Laveycrafts are second to none and had things not changed drastically in my world id still have both) I let it go and kept the RC. Even tho my RC is like an old battle ax with my finger grooves worn in the handle i luv it. Its like a piece of me. For me its like an ever evolving piece of useful artwork. No matter where you pull up, no matter what absolutely bitchen hardware is around you, everyone will come look at yours. Another upside is they sure hold a pretty high value.

Once you ride in one you’re gonna understand. They’re built like a brick shit house and eat the sloppy stuff up. Nobody comes close to rigging and material.

When I first rode in one when I was a kid I was a fan ever since. Still haven’t owned one though.
