Schiada to catalina?

Anyone ever run a Schiada 21rc to Catalina for pleasure instead of racing?

While mine has made the trip 22 times prior to me owning it for the last 20+ years I couldn’t imagine after making the trip in a larger boat. I’m sure at the right time of day and weather permitting it is more than doable but I would certainly want support nearby just in case. I’m sure there are many others on here that are way more familiar and experienced with that than I.

I took my Lavey 21 XTSki (open bow) over a couple times. Easier going over in the morning as it was smooth, trips back in the afternoon were a bit rougher, but there were never any scary moments. It was fast going over, nearly twice as long coming back due to the swells.

Took my 20 Spectra numerous times from Vancouver to Vancouver Island, 30 nautical miles. In the mornings the water were usually tame to cross, but returning later in the afternoon, it was a hit and miss. Few times I just stayed over night before returning. My 24 Spectra did well, but the lower freeboard compared to high freeboard boat like my 257 Mirage, guaranteed a wet ride if the wind picked up.
The 19 Spectra, forget about it, lol

Oh you wussie's, they used to do it in 18' flatbottoms.
Watch the weather, plan for typical problems, have all safety equip. on board and in working condition, have ship to shore radio, compass and know how to use it and go for it. People do it regularly on seadoos, small whalers etc. Make a plan and just go for it.

15 feet and 64 years old (the boat and motor). Choose your day wisely and its no big deal. Break down in a low freeboard boat and it"ll get real quick.

Get the GPS coordinates of Avalon, plug them into a Garmin and follow it over there. Can also get GPS coordinates for Queensgate (if leaving from Long Beach) and get back.

There is a reason the Catalina Ski Race starts at 9am. Because if you wait later, the water gets worse. After 12pm don’t bother heading over, and even then heading back in the afternoon can be doable or you feel like it’s an episode of Gilligans Island.

You won’t have a problem IF you check weather first. Leave from LB or HH @ dawn. ~26 miles. Watch the wind.

Good memory is that when i was an early teen (?) we’d make the run from HH in a 13.5’ Sea Swirl With a 40hp Johnson.

Never done it in a small boat but plenty have. I've been out there when it was pretty flat though. Spent a week out there once and it was flat the whole time. Here's us in "Hot For Teacher" running over with a friend. It was just barely rougher on the way back in the afternoon.

If you pick your day and watch the weather you'll be fine. I would not go alone though, even in flat water. If you have a mechanical issue you could be stuck out there for a while. I'd go with at least one other boat and have your SeaTow membership up to date. I have run over there solo but with a twin engine boat.

And then running back to the coast.

Going out is the easy part early in the morning. The hard part is coming back in the afternoon. The wind and swells can be a bitch to deal with on a low free board boat.

If you REALLY wanna have nice weather, wait till we have a day with a Santa Ana 'Condition' . . . NOT the heavy winds, but the high pressure offshore pattern.
You may get a little a variable 'swirling' wind in the morning, but you won't get the typical afternoon west wind that knocks your teeth out on the way home.
Even if the morning is a little 'breezy' , it'll be at your stern on the way over . . . then lay down like a lake in the afternoon.

This pic was taken on January 1st 2008 on our way over to San Clemente Island . . . that's the backside Catalina looking northwest.
The surface still had some wind crinkle on it . . . but it layed down to sheet glass in the afternoon.
We taped that little Yamaha 70 2-stroke wide open on the way home and rolled back at 45 mph laughing our arsses off !!!
We buddy-boated with a small group, and one dude took some extra gas for me . . . we burned 23 gallons if I remember correctly . . . not bad for 120+ miles.

Took my 19' open bow Bayliner out to Catalina a couple of dozen time to fish and hangout.
Great times. Always had the bow cover on during the trip back.

I was SOOO close to taking my boat over for the Catalina GP when they did it. If my finances were better aligned at the time, I totally would have. My dad sent me pictures of the water on the way over and it was glass. That would have definitely had some people talking that weekend. lol! No idea where I would moor it though.

Yes! Never seen it that flat before or after that trip. Sure do miss those old times. Looking forward to getting out there again with my new Formula. With 502 Mags stroked out to 540's with allegedly 650 HP (built by Honker Cut Marine), Stelling extension boxes and XR drives, she should run pretty good. Weight is 8500 dry so she's a little heavy but all the better to cut through the big stuff.

I know the previous owner (Wilson Racing) of my 20’ Schiada ran it in the CSR a few times without issue. I have owned it for over 25 years and never put it in salt water.
I have made that trip in a 17’ Whaler without issue in October with light offshore winds.

We just got back from Buccaneer Days and had smooth sailing both ways. Didn't leave San Pedro until noon on Friday due to heavy drinking until 3 a.m. Thursday night aboard ship. Fog varied from heavy to lifting Friday and it was very smooth going over. Coming back Sunday afternoon it was a bit rougher but nothing to complain about in a 50' Cris Craft. Plenty of motored sailboats made the trip. I only saw one RDP type boat, I think it was a Lavey or Hallet, but I was never very close to it.
Fog makes GPS absolutely essential most trips I've made.

When I was a kid, my dad and a few friends took our boats to Catalina for the day. Our boat was a 14' Yellowjacket with a 75hp Merc. We followed the Great White Steamer over. Coming back we were dalayed by a friends boat breaking down. We missed following the Steamer. Holy Moly. I was just a little kid and remember the swells were so big you would drop down into a troth and not be able to see the horizon. I was so scared but... we made it back.

My step brother was the Edison guy on Catalina years ago. I don't know what size, but he crossed numerous times in a Zodiac

When I had a rag boat in Long Beach I remember being on a mooring at the Isthmus and talking with 2 docs that owned a yacht with a 3rd doc. The 3rd doc got held up at the hospital and the two I met at the bar took the yacht to the Isthmus and left the dingy in the slip for the 3rd. He left Long Beach at like 8:00pm in a tiller steered dingy and got to the Isthmus at a little after 10:30pm. That's dedication right there!

Little more freeboard than Schiada but I regularly run my Parker 18 center console to Catalina without thinking twice (obviously pick your wind / swell period days (rule of 3rds for the swell size/period). Should be no issue. Had some super glassy days last month!

They used to use flatbottoms in the Catalina Ski Race for sure, so yes, these stories are true. They used to have to refuel with gas cans while still racing pulling a skier. These days we are all a bit softer.

The original owner of my old 82 20' Raysoncraft made its maiden voyage in 1982 to Avalon and back. The couple that went with him and his wife took the ferry back. LOL
