We were doing that in the 90’s in Jet class. Damn boat had small 20 gallon saddle tanks. The observer had to try and get the 5 gallon fuel can nozzle into the fuel fill while we were returning to LB. We carried 20 gallons in 4 fuel cans. The hope was half that would make it into the fuel tanks.They used to use flatbottoms in the Catalina Ski Race for sure, so yes, these stories are true. They used to have to refuel with gas cans while still racing pulling a skier. These days we are all a bit softer.
The observer typically had more on himself or the boat. Good thing our observer wasn't a smoker.
We fixed the problem later by going to 32 gallons a side, and then finding willing observers got a lot easier.
