I wasn’t able to join RiverDave and HeadlessHula in their boating adventures, as I was a couple hours north of them on vacation. Every day we watched eagles pull fish from the lake. Talk about an awesome show!

If you look just right of center you’ll see an eagle keeping an eye on us.

This is a passage between Lake Tomahawk and Little Lake Tomahawk. We saw either a beaver or otter swimming on one of our trips through here.

Taking in a local water ski show from the water. I’ve wanted to do this for 25 years. It’s a free show that survives on donations. They pass the hat on land and one of the chase boats comes around during intermission and collects as well. It’s mostly high school students, and since the show is in Minocqua, WI, they’re known as the Min-Aqua Bats. The show has been going on since the 1940’s!

I did get home early enough to meet those jokers for dinner at the Dirty Oar. RD was doing his best impression of a WI accent, except he had a little Canadian and Yuper (Da UP, or Upper Peninsula of MI) all mixed together.

I think HeadlessHula did a great job of giving RD a good cross-section of our local boating and culture. Must not have scared him too bad as RD was talking about coming back!:D

@RiverDave
This is a reminder about our bet, in case you claim drunken forgetfulness ;)

Hey Dave,

How did you like cruising around in the Kryptonite?
Seems like it would be a ripper with a 300r
and a terror with the 400r!

I think I mentioned to HH (in a pm) that I was eyeballing that boat when it came up for sale...but he did a lot nicer job bringing it back.

Man the views of the shore are sofa king amazing. I just may have to go with mama next year after all up to IL and WI, you said Lavalle wasn’t all that far maybe we will have to make our way down towards you. Roger’s house is absolutely gorgeous crazy to see what RD called a 300k home looks more like a 3m$ home

Lavalle is probably an hour and a half south west. I'd be down for a Mississippi river trip...:)

The Kryptonite is an awesome platform and could be a huge success on the west coast. It has a ton of room in it and then the undertow is HUGE for a 23’ boat.

I could See myself owning one at some point in the future.

yes I could...growing up back East I've always liked the ease of owning an outboard.
my boat just burned in a wildfire so I'm actively looking. 23-25 range would be ideal. We can drop in the ocean locally, but otherwise do a lot of long range towing, so a light boat with a deep vee would be ideal.

Its stained from the tamarack swamps up river. Tannic acid in the water.

I enjoy the heck out of sharing this stuff. As much grief as I get for dealing with the winter months, I feel you guys are starting to understand why I put up with the snow up to my balls, and cold that'll make your eyes freeze open. Lolol...

I've said this quite a few times here.
It's not wrong. It just different. ;)

Happy Sunday RDP. :)

Same here....the weather can suck really bad in January/February. On the other hand, that's why you buy a snowmobile. It makes winter fun.

Western and Northern New York State are beautiful scenery wise. The Fingerlakes are awesome. The Thousand Islands and Adirondack Mountains are beautiful too..

The only downside is the rocks, rocks, and more F'n rocks. The rocks are round, but rocks are not sand. There are no sandy beaches here, unless they trucked the sand in from elsewhere.

That is what I noticed about Northern Michigan, and over into Wisconsin, the beaches actually had sand !!!

On the rivers it's a mix of sandy bottoms and some gravel. Lots of different sandbars to explore. I sort of got into a rut with going to the same spot again and again. This turn and burn tour with RD has renewed my thirst for exploring, thats for sure.

Hey Ouderkirk I grew up nearby and still boat in that area occasionally with family.
If you want to try a short road trip with killer while sand beaches check out Northwest Lake Erie on the Canadian Side...specifically the Crystal Beach and Sherkston Beach areas. Lake Erie can be bought rough down around Cleveland, by most glassy in the lee in this Northwest corner. I've taken a photo from the top of an 80' tall sand dune, out onto clear blue water, and asked people to guess where it is. Most people say Caribbean? (I'll try find a better photo). The "end of industry" and the zebra mussels have really cleaned up the lake since I was a kid, and the white sand beaches are great (even though they have removed a lot of the dunes)

You can launch out of Buffalo or Port Colborne on the Canadian Side.

Buffalo mostly looks like ass from the water, but they restored a cool little area called Canal Side. You can pull in with your boat for food and drinks, and you can listen to concerts from your boat in the summer...it's actually pretty fun.

I was born in Buffalo (my entire family was from there and the surrounding towns), and remember the "Gold Coast" and all of the steel mills and grain and cement elevators. Buffalo was a busy and bustling place when I was a young kid (1966 to 1969)

I grew up at Lime Lake (south of Buffalo) in the summers and we lived in Syracuse after my dad was transferred there by GM in 1969.

We used to go to Crystal Beach when it was an amusement park and Sherkston Beaches too. We would go to Port Stanley as well. My aunt was from Part Colborne.

The "downtown "of Buffalo is quite different from the war zone that the First Ward/Canalside was back in the late 1970's. Chippewa St. and the enitire waterfront area is really nice and well policed. A long way from the steel mills/coking plants and elevators and public housing projects that populated the area at the time I recall. My best friend who still lives at Lime Lake, took me down there a few weeks ago and I was impressed at how safe the entire area was day or night. I took my boat there and launched it from the NFTA park across from the old Bethlehem Plant. We had a great time and I was even comfortable with going to a few of the bars while my boat was on the trailer. 30 years ago, that area was nothing but hookers and drug dealers, and If I had left my boat and truck there it would have been gone in 60 seconds.

The only sand beach on this side is at Sandy Pond at the east end of Lake Ontario. Everywhere else it is the rocky tailings from the glacier.

I live in Rochester now and I have a seasonal home on Keuka Lake which is magnificent (the lake, not the house). If you've never been there I strongly suggest a trip out to investigate. The water quality of Keuka has to be seen to be believed. It is absolutely crystal clear everywhere. When you drive, the prop wash is blue, not green.

I am definately up for a boating trip or even a hockey game. No Bills...I am done with the NFL.

It's a very cool place to boat and the people are very cool.

That said it gets down to like 40 degrees in Havasu in the winter (at night).. Over there it gets down to like Negative double digits. :D I don't think I could deal with that. :D

First year my mom moved back to WI and stayed the winter I visited. Christmas Day the HIGH was -8, the low the night before when I got to the House was -28. WITH THE WINDCHILL the low was -48. Woke up the day after Christmas and my rental car and my moms and her husbands car batteries were all frozen (even though they were plugged in to maintain them). The snowmobile ride to town (15 miles each way), sucked, but was the only way to get the cars working again, Spent 4 days with my mom and the highest temp I saw was 2. That is cold I never want to experience again.

I'll always remember a headline in the relatives small town newspaper in northern MI. They were in the middle of a month long cold spell where the temp had not been more than a few degrees above zero for several weeks and mostly around -20. The guys at a local ice plant remarked they could enter the freezer area where ice was handled and it was 10 degrees warmer that it was outside.

My Dad was a southern boy and Mom was from MI. I grew up in the north and returned to my Dad's roots as soon as humanly possible back in 1971, never looking back. Great place to visit or live in the warm months, but bitter cold is no Bueno.:D
