Thanks Milk [emoji4] I sure love seeing pics of beautiful Gracie. Labs are such amazing dogs! Kaiya is a blue merle Australian Shepherd.

Ur welcome. And thank you. Like wise with Kaiya, I new there was Australian in the name and jus couldn't remember.

Nice write up in other post. Ur details are very true and explains part of the reason I have always choose purebred. Everybody here always has cute river doggy's.

P.S. This thread made me think of Molly , when talking about goldens [emoji41][emoji106][emoji202]

Our two labs were from (2) local breeders here in San Diego. The wife researched and asked tons of questions of the breeders and talked to AKC (American Kennel Club) about the breeders.

Our pups are going on 8 years this year. The perfect dogs that fit our lifestyle. And have been going to Parker as soon as they were able to get their last parvo vaccine.

We actually are going to a Rescue Center tomorrow afternoon to 'interview' a little guy. If he and our two get along, we will adopt him :)

I have had both rescues and purebreds (currently own five purebred Aussies) I have had good experiences with both and have not had any "bad" dogs. I will say that rescues tend to be extremely loyal as they know that you took them out of a bad situation and gave them a forever home. Best dog we ever had was a black lab mix rescue (supposedly mixed with Aussie but I don't think so) huge dog....absolutely loved to go to Glamis. She would literally jump for joy when I was prepping the motorhome.

Definitely pros and cons to both paths, and there are breed specific rescue sites out there if a certain breed tickles your fancy.
My boy Rocky is a pure bred from a rescue, and I've had puppies too.
Also had a dog that got passed off to another family, she was a great dog.

Sometimes you're just in the right place at the right time.

This is Sam the Rottie. My friends heard of a friend of a friend deal that the people were going to take him to the pound. They were his 3rd owner in a little over a year. His story was he was "unruly, didn't mind, did what ever he wanted, etc" and none of the owners could get him trained and mind.

My friends were in a position to take him and were already Rottie experienced. They figured they'd give him a chance before seeing him go to the pound.

They figured out within a week he wasn't unruly or an asshole dog, he was deaf. He can't hear shit!
The guys wife got online and started learning sign language and hand commands for dogs and today he's awesome.
They have an E collar for him so if he's on the other side of the property and they want him they give the collar a bump. It vibrates and he looks to them for a sign.

Paul, my wife and I just did the rescue thing. The shelter here has a 7 days fostering program, gave us a minute to figure her out and her us. Had her three weeks now and it has been great. She just wants to please.

I've grew up with pure bred dogs and horses, and some mixed breeds, and in my experience, the mixed breeds seem to have less health issues, and better temperament. We had Germans, Bouvier's, cattle dogs, several different breed Arabian horses, and the pure breeds seem to not love as long, or get some painful disease that kills them. The mixed breeds benefit from "hybrid vigor" according to our vet, that means they get all the good stuff, and not much of the bad stuff from the different DNA. We had one puppy mill dog, a Lhasa apso, and he was a complete asshole. He bit everyone including myself. Many times. He was from a bad environment I'd guess. Now we have a rescue mix breed terrier, poodle, corgi, and whatever else, and she is the best animal we've ever had. A lot of it is luck of the draw too.

Regardless of your choice OD1, how the dog is cared for, trained, etc is the most important thing.

If you do decide to adopt a pure bred dog, ensure it comes from a highly experienced and reputable breeder. One that does not breed for money. Rather one that breeds to maintain/improve the breed. Reputable breeders perform generations of health testing and know the history of every dog in the pedigree. Typically such a breeder spends money breeding, not making it. Only breeding two animals that genetically, phenotypically, and pedigree complement each other. And only in the long range plan to have breedable dogs available to continue the quality of future generations

Pros and cons people. I like the idea of a rescue dog. I think it's the right thing to do. A little worried about not knowing what breed it really is or the temperament, also I really don't want an abused dog. Sometimes they never seem to right after that.

We have had purebred labs for 20+ years, Yellows and Blacks (Chocolates are just whacked if you asked me:p). Been through all the medical issues and after the loss of the last one (way to early, see video around here somewhere) my daughter, who works at the local shelter, spotted a little black rescue. Seems the owner and her 3 year old daughter were living behind a trash dumpster in Oxnard (as in homeless!!!) The cops talked the lady into giving up the child and the puppy until she could properly care for the child and herself. Not sure what happen to the lady and little girl but the puppy ended up at my house.
I have no clue what the hell she is but, dam if this "tiny dog" hasn't figured out how to wrap herself around our hearts!!!!

I guess we took a break from the purebred deal (not really intended just kinda of happened that way), I'll let you know how it works out:):)

Those are breeds that fit my requirements for sure. I also like border collies. Aussies. Maybe something along those lines.

The pup we adopted we believe is half Blue Healer and half Shepard. Cattle dogs make very loyal pets.

Just left Humane Society in Havasu. How sad that there's so many pitbulls there. Like 95 percent. Fucking people breed these dogs and realize they are too much to handle. How many get euthanized??? Anyhow not interested in anything aggressive. The keys are tight quarters. So sad though. Still looking.

I've had these 2 for about 6 months now.

I bought them from my sister's litters, but I know there are rescue programs.

I bought from a breeder because I had spent time with the parents of my dogs, and knew what I was paying for. With a rescue program it's like rolling the dice, you could have a dog that is rough with kids, barks often, has fear because of past situations and is aggressive because of it. Etc.

I've seen it go both ways, but for me I wanted dogs I could have around my friends and take to work without being worried. I knew what I was getting before either of my dogs came home with me....

best dogs and cats that Ive had were muts...

and were rescued from the street or given to me...

somehow I felt they were grateful for being saved...

somewhere I heard the pure breeds have more health problems... I know my golden retriever did...

and larger dogs usually dont live as long and have more health issues...

It is indeed sad how many great dogs wind up in shelters. Here are a couple rescues we acquired about 10 years ago. One's a pit, and the other some sort of husky mix. They both love hiking, swimming, and going anywhere we go in the car. Like people, each dog has their own unique personality, and each of these has their idiosyncrasies. But they are both loyal, affectionate (particularly the pit), and terrific companions, and we couldn't imagine life without them.

I am all about purebred as long as it's a reputable breeder and they breed correctly.

I figured you'd be all about the hybrid vigor with dogs ...not that there's anything wrong with liking pb's

breeder dogs!!!! why save a dog that wasn't wanted , We have way too many dogs and cats that are mutts and need to be eliminated or used for medical research.
get a dog that is useful. A hunting dog, a protection dog, a lap dog.

Soooo I guess you would put them down if not used for research? I can't believe you even said that!!!

Get from a reputable rescue and they'll have the temperament concerns already figured out for you. That is what good rescues do, match the correct dog with the correct family requirements. I work with several rescues. 10000 dogs per day are euthanized in the U.S. Make it 9999 for a day. That one dog you save will be eternally grateful. A large number of dogs in rescues came out of shelters that would have killed them, so you are making room for another to be saved.

I've had over a dozen dogs in my life, all have been either from shelters or off the street. All have been great dogs. But getting from an actual reputable rescue org takes the guesswork away to a large degree. If you need help finding a particular breed or type of dog let me know and I'll try to connect you with the correct rescue people that can help. That is largely what I do, help make connections. Between rescues and shelter dogs, but also adopters and rescues.

We've had good luck with purebred pet rescue, try Google, and narrow your seach to whatever you are interested in. We live outside of town on 10 acres so we always have large dogs, and yes they don't live as long.

Sad isn't it. The other breed I see of a ton of are chihuahua's

Wifes a full time mobile groomer and our household charity is donating grooming to our fav shelters so the animals will look and smell good which increases chances of adoption.

Every swinging dick with a bitch want a litter of puppies thinking they can sell them, but 98% go right into the gas chamber.

I won't debate the merits of adopting a rescue. It is a cool thing to do.
That being said, we currently have two Boston terriers that we paid what I think of a big bucks (for an animal) to the respective breeders. Last week we were informed our new boy had been born. We then put down another deposit for a female of the same litter. They should be ready to go mid march. I had my eye on this breeder for a some time. Coincidentally we had a chance to meet a pup from this breeder while on vacation in Yellowstone last summer. We were sold.

I'd adopt Harley today. I didn't see her on their website but sent an email. Timing is everything I guess. After seeing that you kinda know what I'm looking for if you see another.

I would never have another purebred dog. I've had 3, and all of them fucked up in the head.. lol. Not saying they're all bad, I know they're not. Just been my experience.

The mutts we've had all had much better personalities. The one we have now is supposedly a purebred, but we never received the papers as promised... sooo I don't know. She's cute, and very loveable, but dumb as a stick. We love her anyways.

Only thing I can suggest, is if you want a boat dog, something smaller and short haired [emoji6]

You are one 60 dollar test away from guessing what a dog really is.

I had a fascinating DNA test return on one of my rescues.

No wonder we couldn't figure out what the fuck she was....

That's how my S-I-L confirmed what we all thought looking at the dog.. ...and confirmed she didn't get what she paid for. .[emoji12] [emoji1]

Yup.

DNA test separates the men from boys in terms of who is a real breeder.

The breeder can lie about the heritage but they cant cheat the math.

My other 2 rescues I can pretty much figure it out, and they are awesome mixes and I dont care to know more - but every now and then life hands you a very different animal thats very special which why I felt the urge to spend the money on this little girl.

As much as I like Frenchies or even English bulldogs Id be afraid it would drown if it got out. I've heard Bostons are pretty agile and good swimmers. My preference would be an Aussie at this point.

Our dog was a rescue. We brought him home at about three weeks and ended up being pretty sick. We had to nurse him back to health, but he turned out to be great. As hippy as it sounds, I believe dogs know when they've been rescued. Either way, when they are puppies, require A LOT of attention. I really think they're like kids in that regard, how much attention and training they get really helps with temperament.

Sasha is a rescue. She is forever grateful and loyal to Dave. While she does have her quirks and doesn't love all men...she would protect our babies with her life. I say rescue one!
