Sadly people lost their lives.. pics showed a head on. Road is closed…advise those you know to take an alternate route.

They are supposedly diverting people to California 95 up to needles 6 hr estimated closure per a report I read.

Edit per a friend one lane alternating now…

Sad
I will say it...the level of asshole driver goes way up from the concrete plant to first traffic light. For some reason it's the last 3 miles and everyone drives like shit.
Plus the nomads pulling off the 95.

RIP

Funny that is when I drive the most conservative and actually go the speed limit.

What with some of the antics I see its not surprising. The city is going to have to address the over crowded situation sooner or later because this place just cannot handle the numbers nowadays, its pretty bad the way the traffic patterns are laid out :(

I came in last night and sat in traffic for about 20 minutes. It looked like there was 3 Tow trucks and it was hard to see anything else. Very sad to see. RIP

Folks get real worked up when they get stuck behind a slow vehicle coming up from parker. Usually nothing you can do until you get to the passing lanes. For a lot of folks, you’ve been in the car for say 4+ hours and in my opinion the nicest part of the drive is from Parker to Havasu. And a lot of folks have to do 90 in the last 5 miles to get to the first stoplight at the same time

Or they don't want to slow down after passing a hundred cars on rice.

I'm not sure I understand what overcrowding has to do with one vehicle attempting an unsafe pass of another vehicle and crashing head on into an local resident.

It’s the same as Bullhead. Neither of these towns were built for the number of residents that currently reside there. The more the congestion, the more someone has the desire to make a retarded move to pass the influx of Californians to the area that have essentially destroyed the small town feel.
At this point, the 95 needs 3 lanes in each city.

I sent my son to a good driving school in Scottsdale when he was 16. Of all the simulator time and behind the wheel time with an instructor they NEVER once taught him how to pass a car on a 2 lane highway.

I spent many hours between Cave Creek and Parker with him practicing passing and understanding the ins and outs of passing on a 2 lane highway. Its really is a skill that should be taught.

The other problem with passing lanes is so many people don’t understand how that should done either
They only care that they can pass the slow car instead of hauling as past the slow car and then pulling to the right to allow the other cars a clear shot at passing at a good clip

My dad taught me how to pass on rice road. I’ve personally been driving that road for 20 years. And been on that road for 38 years

It’s not you that you have to worry about. It’s the other drivers….
I'm always looking for an escape route when I have approaching traffic. If a semi is coming I drift to right, not for a bigger gap but so anyone behind the semi has a better chance of seeing me. Defensive driving is a skill many do not possess.

I learned to pass other cars during the 60s and 70s in New Mexico on Highway 66 and Highway 44, which is now 550. I can tell by observation that Millennium and Gen Z Man don't have the slightest clue how to do it.

"influx of Californians to the area"

And they bring with them their lack of patience and shitty driving habits. I escaped kali, but paid my dues driving LA for 40 years. I left the agro behind, now I just cruise, safely.

I guess that drivers from anywhere can have "lack of patience and shitty driving habits," since this one was from the UK.

That is sad.

One thing I learned in Europe driving underpowered little shitboxes on mountain roads, is that if you're not gonna make the pass, it's a hell of a lot faster to just hit the brakes and tuck back in behind the guy than to try to use your engine to make it.

Could it be Time to Have an Open Discussion on the possibility of Installing Concrete Barriers to Help Prevent Head on Collisions on the 95 !
PCH Between Seal Beach & Sunset installed them only after the Death Toll Eclipsed 25 +
Hwy 18 also below the Crestline Bridge installed barriers ! I am Pretty sure the CHP
pushed for both with Dramatic Results .....😎

I don’t see this ever happening, personally. I drive it every day to work, too, and I’d be all for it.

There’s another big crash down by the springs right now and it was closed for a bit, but it’s back open now.

And if you don’t think the center divider barrier works on the 18 you aren’t paying attention to all the places the center divider has been hit and dented. It is impressive how beaten it is and to think it kept that vehicle from crossing the other lanes.

It’s great, except when it snows and then you slide into it because the highway deck is banked.

Someday (just like airbags and seatbelts), all cars will drive themself autonomously.

Our problem is a split in driver experience Levels. Some can drive 75-85, move over, and let a guy going 90 by. Others have no business driving faster than 35-45mph, and have no business entering on a freeway. It’s all about the driver.

I’ve been putting 30,000 miles a year on company cars for 40 years, and can spot a potential problem 10-20 seconds before I reach it, but it’s been too close for my level of comfort twice. Both were potential head on. Two cars trying to pass at the same time, and one not make the complete pass In time. Both times I saw the first car, but didn’t see the second car passing right behind the first, and the guy obliviously thought the guy in front was going to be much quicker. It was a very tight squeeze, and high rates of speed. Surly less than a foot of clearance with our mirrors.

550 is now a divided highway all the way from Bernalillio to Aztec. In fact I think it changed to hwy 550 when that work was completed 20 years ago.

Unless you ply the truly back roads in many parts of the country you don't see 2 lane highways much anymore.

2 motorcycles were laying down in the South bound lanes down from the springs and going North there was some running event that had a cop going the speed of the runner in the lane this morning. Backup of cars both directions and when the cop pulled over into the turn lane to let everyone pass, everyone had their head in their ass and just parked in the center median. Afterwards going North people were just passing to make up time. Why the fuck is there a marathon on 95?

The run was a Hualapai indian run of some relay run. They had people about every 1/4 mile to take over running. The southbound had me backed up for almost an hour trying to get to Parker for the races. When we went by the bikes we're just parked and nothing was going on to justify that wait. A few of us tried to go around but all the gates were locked.

That Road was deemed Devils highway because it was such a slaughterhouse.

Gawd I hated driving that road on our way to Durango to Ski Purgatory.

Same deal here with company cars, worst time to be on the road is the weekend for sure or driving on country roads were drivers become bored and do dopey things.

It’s getting much better with 4 lanes. Both of my close calls were on Highway 93 between Wickenberg and Wikiup.

The run for the Hualapai's was in remembrance of an event they call their*** "Trail of Tears". Some of the the Hualapais were moved from the Peach Springs/Grand Canyon area to La Paz, AZ just north of Ehrenberg on the CRIT Reservation. La Paz was once a steamboat port, Stage Stop, and mining town, and for a while was the largest town in the Arizona Territory, County Seat for Yuma County and was being considered for the Territorial Capital. The River shifted in the mid 1860s, the gold ran out, and the town died officially when the Yuma County Seat was moved to Yuma in 1870. A group of Hualapais, mostly those captured and held at Fort Beale for attacks on white settlers and the Army, were sent to the old La Paz town site in 1874. They escaped after a year and made their way back to the Peach Springs area.

***As if a 2 week trip of 160 miles in April can compare to a 5 year exodus of 1,000+ miles for the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole and Chickasaw on the REAL Trail of Tears.

Another good TC on Oro Grande/95 as we were heading out around 8. Looked like someone ran a light and southbound 95 vehicle hit the Oro Grande traffic.

Nope ,666 went from Gallup nm to Monticello Utah. They changed name to 491 Shockingly didn’t make a damn bit of difference in deaths. Seems Indians still drink and drive.

New Mexico has been working on making that stretch from Gallup to Ship Rock 4 Lane also. Last time I was through there (a decade ago now) they lacked about 20 or 30 miles. Seems like they were doing about 4-5 miles a year so I would think it would be competed by now.

Between Shiprock and Cortez is still 2 way traffic except for some suicide lanes on the NM side. Colorado won't spend the money to improve the road on their side so NM want either.

All 4 lane from Gallup to Shiprock now for a few years. Still rougher than shit and potholes everywhere even on the part that’s only a couple years old. From Shiprock to Monticello still two lane and plenty of wrecks with quite a few fatalities especially in winter when icy and blowing snow. Lots of semi truck wrecks in winter from low talent drivers that don’t slow down for conditions.
